The Palau de la Música, considered the most modernist building in the world, was built at the beginning of the 19th century by the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner. The works of Domènech i Montaner are noteworthy due to their excellent combination of structural rationality with extraordinary ornamental features. These are inspired by Spanish-Arab architectural trends and by the curved lines of modernism. The Palau de la Música is the only modernist concert hall to have been granted UNESCO World Heritage status.

Spring in Barcelona9 Palau de la Musica3 The concert hall

  1. 1. The Palau de la Música Catalana was built at the beginning of the 19th century by the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner, one of the leading modernist architects from Catalonia. It is the only modernist concert hall to have been granted UNESCO World Heritage status (1997). This is the only auditorium in Europe that is illuminated entirely by natural light during the daytime. The concert hall features about 2,200 seats, spread out over 3 floors
  2. 2. The walls of the concert hall on either side consist entirely of stained glass panels set beneath fantastic arches
  3. 3. The vaults between the arches and pillars are covered in stunning tile work. In the center of each of the vault are a bunch of laurel wreaths with the names of famous musicians set inside, essentially crowning them with this distinguished honor
  4. 4. Along the right upper balcony, the flag of Saint George and senyera (Catalan flag) embedded into the stained glass
  5. 5. Pegasus, the winged horses of Greek mythology, that enjoy a commanding position in the upper balcony, is the symbol of high-flying imagination
  6. 6. The centerpiece of this room is an incredible stained glass ceiling. Unlike some skylights, this one is an inverted dome, so it feels as though the ceiling in curling in towards the audience below. It was designed by Antoni Rigalt whose mastery of stained glass is unmatched
  7. 7. The center of the dome is a luminous geometric sun in a variety of warm hues. Surrounding the sun is a chorus of angels set against a tightly patterned sky
  8. 8. The whole arch over the front of the stage was sculpted by Dídac Masana and Pablo Gargallo. On the right side is depicted the ride of the valkyries in Wagner's opera in which the female choir sings with great musical power. Under the valkyries and among two Doric columns— symbol of classical art—is a bust of Beethoven (in honor of the beautiful choral composition in Ninth Symphony known as the Ode to Joy.
  9. 9. A bust of Anselm Clavé, a famous choir director who was instrumental in reviving Catalan folk songs, is situated on the left side of the stage, under a stone tree
  10. 10. Seated beneath this statue are sculpted girls singing the Catalan song Les Flors de Maig (The Flowers of May)
  11. 11. In a semicircle on the sides of the back of the stage are the figures of 18 young women popularly known as the muses (although there are only nine muses in Greek mythology. The upper bodies were sculpted by Eusebi Arnau and the mosaic work of their lower bodies was created by Lluís Bru
  12. 12. In the centre there is a senyera or Catalan flag
