City Youth Online Partnership
Digital Media and Creative Industries has proven to be a great way to engage and retain disadvantaged and
disengaging students in education either at school or other alternative learning pathways. The City Youth
Online Partnership will address the Partnership Broker Program aim of improving attainment through the
partnering of education, industry and community to create enriched learning and real world experiences for
students.
The Central Workers with Youth Action Network (CWYAN) is a network of over 65+ government and non-
government organisations that work with young people in the inner city. The network meet on a monthly
basis to; share information, co-ordinate inner city activities, maintain linkages between different levels of
service providers, generate local advocacy, take collective action, participate in Government policy
development and identify key issues. Through the collective expertise members of CWYAN exchange
information on topics including; homelessness, juvenile justice, health, education/training, employment,
recreation, arts and culture, income support and drugs and alcohol.
CWYAN’s website is very simple and has been identified by its members as inadequate in providing the
needed information to members, city youth and the community. Using CWYAN’s finite funds to pay for the
design and development of a website commercially is prohibitive and not the highest priority for funding.
AITEC as the partnership broker for the region presented the alternative to CWYAN to partner with a city
school that could use the project as an authentic learning activity and CWYAN would obtain a contemporary
and effective online resource.
Objectives
The collaboration of Adelaide High School (education), CWYAN (community) and local digital business
(mentoring) in a partnership to enhance and improve youth attainment and transition by:
• creating and developing a pilot project that will give the participating students an authentic real world
experience that makes their learning relevant;
• embedding literacy, numeracy and employability skills into a project based learning experience;
• developing alternative models to traditional work experience and placements;
• developing a model that schools can replicate to create working partnerships with their community to
enhance retention and attainment;
• giving back to the community by developing and maintaining a significant community resource; and
• providing opportunity for businesses and employers to mentor and influence the future workforce;
Concept
Adelaide High School students (yr10 to yr12) under the supervision of their teacher(s) in the media/ICT
subject area and in collaboration with the Chairperson and/or nominated contact of CWYAN would:
• design and maintain the “City Youth Online” website. (e.g. follow design process, work from a brief,
develop a concept, present to customer etc.);
• suggest and negotiate features and applications (e.g. log in for members, public access section);
• liaise with CWYAN and its members to present, obtain information and approvals;
• upload meeting agendas and minutes;
• upload flyers of youth events, training courses, holiday programs, information about health and well-
being, professional development opportunities and conferences;
• maintain accurate information of CWYAN members – e.g. add new members and remove members who
have left;
• each school year induct a new cohort of students to join existing students to maintain consistency and
handover of knowledge/skills; and
• undertake continuous improvement by developing and maintaining handbooks and processes to ensure
quality and consistency.
