21736051544955One trend to watch in 2011 is the growing popularity of smaller social networks organized around a specific topic or interest. These networks are now user-centric and have applications to let users rate and track activity. These sites offer users many benefits, such as organizing their different groups of acquaintances, controlling which friends can see what information, and allowing for more privacy. Marketers can leverage this trend by creating content that is highly relevant to a smaller group of users, since those users will be more likely to act on marketing communications.Key Information<br />2010 may be remembered as the year of Facebook, but the popular site has experienced backlash over its privacy issues and information overload. One trend to watch in 2011 is the growing popularity of smaller, topic-specific social networks where users congregate around an interest or hobby. Although some would argue that these networks, in the form of message boards and online forums, have existed for decades, specialized social networks in recent years are more person-centric, rather than topic-centric, making it easier for users to follow and friend each other and develop relationships.
