  1. 1. SOM 01 Foundations of Our Faith SOM 01-02 Worldview 2 This class will examine the basic foundational beliefs of the evangelical Christian church, with a focus on Redemption, Church, Calling, & Re-creation.
  2. 2. Evang. Worldview: Redemption 6b. REGENERATION: We believe that those who repent of their sins & trust in Jesus Christ as Savior are regenerated by the Holy Spirit. Scripture: Ro 3:23-24; 6:23; Ac 2:38; 17:30
  3. 3. • Man could not be saved by his work. • Personal redemption is needed in Christ. • Cosmic redemption: new heaven & a new earth. • Satanic defeat is certain. • Lasting peace will come. • The redemption of God is holistic.. Evang. Worldview: Redemption
  4. 4. 1. Justification (Pagbibigay- Katwiran / Napawalang- sala) is God's declaration that He finds the believing sinner to be positively righteous on the basis of the imputation of the righteousness of Jesus Christ. Evang.
  5. 5. 2. Propitiation (Pagpayapa) is the fact that Jesus Christ is the satisfactory mercy seat at which God is willing to meet the repentant sinner. Evang.
  6. 6. 3. Reconciliation (Muling Pagkakasundo) is that act of Jesus Christ in bringing the sinner back into proper relationship with God. Evang.
  8. 8. 4. Redemption (Pagtubos) is that truth that Jesus Christ paid the price to remove the sinner from the bondage of sin & to set him/her free in Himself. Evang. Worldview: Redemption 2 Peter 2:1 – … there will be false teachers … who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them …. Galatians 3:13 – Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us." Romans 3:24 – By his grace they are justified freely through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus …
  9. 9. 5. Regeneration (Pagbaba- gong-buhay) is the act of God in bringing new life to the believing sinner while he/she is dead in sins. Evang. Worldview: Redemption John 3:3 – Jesus answered him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God."
  10. 10. 6. Remission (Kapatawaran) is the act of God in placing our sins upon Jesus Christ who in His death removed those sins that he might deal with us in grace. Evang. Worldview: Redemption Romans 3:25 – [God] did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because he had waited patiently to deal with sins committed in the past.
  11. 11. 7. End of the law – The law has no hold over us because of the New Covenant in the blood of Jesus. The Law condemned Evang. Worldview: Redemption Galatians 3 – Clearly no one is justified before God by the law, because, ‘The righteous will live by faith’ …. Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: ‘Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree’ …. [the law was given so that people would keep from doing too much bad stuff] …. Now that faith has come, we are no longer under the supervision of the law.” every person because no one could keep it. Now there is freedom for us because Jesus Christ fulfilled the Law & set us free from it. Our living of life is not based upon keeping the Law but upon the Grace of God.
  12. 12. Evang. Worldview: Church 7. THE CHURCH: We believe in the universal church, a living spiritual body of which Christ is the head & all regenerated persons are members. Scripture: Ro 16:3,5a; Col 1:18, 24; 1Co 10:32; 12:28; Ep 1:22- 23; 3:8-10; 5:23-30
  13. 13. Evang. Worldview: Church 7. THE CHURCH: We believe in the local church, consisting of a company of believers in Jesus Christ, baptized on a credible profession of faith & associated for worship, work, & fellowship. Scripture: Col 1:24; 4:15, 16; Acts 8:1; 9:31; 14:23; Php 4:15; 1Th 1:1; 2Th 1:1; Phm 1:2
  14. 14. Evang. Worldview: Church 7. THE CHURCH: We believe that God has laid upon the members of the local church the primary task of giving the gospel of Jesus Christ to the lost world. Scripture: Mt 16:18; 28:19-20
  15. 15. • Unconditional promise, • “I will build My Church” Matt. 16:18. • The Church is One Church, • Eph. 4:4-6; 1 Cor. 12:12; Gal. 3:28. • The Church as Christ's body. • The Church as the presence of God in the world – the sign of the kingdom. • The church as God’s agent of transformation. Evang. Worldview: Church
  16. 16. The CHURCH: Nature • Came into being by the call of God. • Constituted through faith in Christ. • A continuity from the OT to the NT. • OT believes in Christ of Prophecy. • NT believes in Christ of History. • Invisible – Visible • Universal – Local • Organism – Organization • One Body • A divine reality • A covenant community

  34. 34. It's not that movements abolish the clergy. Rather they abolish the laity. Everyone is ordained & mobilized for ministry. Steve Addison, When the church goes to the dogs (Shapevine Training Systems, 2009), p 3.
  35. 35. 4 Na Maling Paniniwala Tungkol sa Calling Misbelief #1: There is a God-ordained division between clergy & laity. Ed Silvoso, Anointed for business: How Christians can use their influence in the marketplace to change the world, (Regal Books, 2002), p 23.
  36. 36. Misbelief #2: The Church is called to operate primarily inside a building often referred to as the “Temple.” ” • The early church operated in many places, none of them church buildings as we know today.
  37. 37. 4 Na Maling Paniniwala Tungkol sa Calling Misbelief #3: People involved in business cannot be as spiritual as those serving in traditional Church ministry.
  38. 38. 4 Na Maling Paniniwala Tungkol sa Calling Misbelief #4: The primary role of “market-place Christians” is to make money to support the vision of those “in the ministry.”
  39. 39. 4 NA ANTAS NG “MARKETPLACE CHRISTIANITY” There are 4 levels of marketplace Christianity: 1. to be a Christian in the marketplace 2. to be a Christian who applies biblical principles in the marketplace 3. to be a Christian who does business in the fullness & in the power of the Holy Spirit 4. to be a Christian committed to the total transformation of the marketplace. Ed Silvoso, Anointed for business: How Christians can use their influence in the marketplace to change the world, (Regal Books, 2002), p123.
  40. 40. Calling 1. General sense: The call is by Christ, to Christ, & for Christ. 2. It is a gracious initiative of God to salvation. 3. God calls His people to radical discipleship 4. God has gifted His people for service.
  41. 41. Calling 5. Christ shares His power & authority to heal, to cast out demons, to proclaim the Gospel of the Kingdom. 6. The Good News of the Kingdom is salvation, deliverance, joy, love, healing, peace, justice, righteousness. 7. Christian vocation is transformational. 8. There is no class Christianity. 9. Every Christian is full time, every time, everywhere for God’s glory.
  42. 42. Calling & Culture How do I know what parts of my culture to accept & what parts to reject/change to truly reflect what God wants?
  43. 43. Calling & Creation: Structure God created everything, including the proper purpose for everything. • Relationship between God & man and man & man (Ex. 20:1-17; Matt. 22:27-40). • Government & Authority (Rom. 13:1-6;1 Pet. 13-20) • Marriage & Sexuality (Gen. 2:23-24; Heb. 13:4) If there is a problem just go back to the norms in Scripture, see where there is a difference & change.
  44. 44. Calling & Creation: Direction Anything in creation can be directed either toward or away from God – that is directed either in obedience or disobedience to his law.” Distortion or Perversion of Creation through the Fall Redemption & Restoration of Creation in Christ
  45. 45. Personal Story: "Evidence of Christianity" A Christian ... / Ang Kristyano ay ... 1. Does Not Drink Alcohol / Hindi nag-inum ng Alak 2. Does Not Smoke / Hindi nanigarilyo 3. Does Not Watch Movies/Hindi nanood ng Sine 4. Does not listen to Rock & Roll 5. Does Not Dance / Hindi sumayaw
  46. 46. Framework: Christian Response 1. What there is about __________ that goes back to creation & reflects a gift of God. 2. What is the impact of our fallen condition on __________? How can Christians try to redeem __________? Paano ba natin pwedeng tubusin ang __________?
  47. 47. Case Study: Dancing / Pagsayaw Dancing & Creation: bodily movement, rhythm, music, social interaction, enjoyment, healthy, Beautiful, Old Testament: a part of celebration Dancing & Sin: sexual arousal/provocation, promiscuity, provocative dress & suggestive music, hypnotic lighting, liquor or drugs, “worldly amusement” can lead to carnality of intent & imagination, to lust against a woman is adultery. Critical issues related to dancing: sexuality
  48. 48. Dancing: Proposed Alternatives • only between husband & wife; • dance as exercise w/out partners; • some cultural dances; • liturgical dancing; • Right place & occasion.
  49. 49. Evang. Worldview: Re-Creation 12. THE LAST THINGS: We believe in the personal & visible return of the Lord Jesus Christ to earth & the establishment of His kingdom. We believe in the resurrection of the body, the final judgment, the eternal felicity of the righteous, & the endless sufferings of the wicked. Scripture: Mt 24:30; 26:64; Re 22:7; Php 3:20-21; Re 20:11-15; Jo 14:1-3; Mt 21:41,46; Re 20:10; 21:8
  50. 50. Revelation 11:15 "The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Messiah, & he will rule as king forever & ever." “Ang paghahari sa sanlibutan ay inilipat na kay Cristo na ating Panginoon. Maghahari siya magpakailanman!”
  51. 51. − To reorder the internal life of the community in ways faithful to YHWH. − To invite the world outside the community to reorder its life with reference to YHWH. The Church's Goal: Eschatology provides a worldview framework for the church’s mission in the contemporary age. The crucial significance of the worldview may be defined by two corollaries:
  52. 52. FROM CREATION TO THE NEW CREATION
  53. 53. A. Created Realities [Ge 1,2; Col 1] 1.Visible (Foreground): • Humanity, Physical Universe, 2.Invisible (Background): • Moral codes, ideology, races, structures, powers, principles
