Human Reproduction,[object Object],Chapter Four,[object Object]
Sexual Reproduction in Animals,[object Object]
Sexual Reproduction,[object Object],Sexual reproduction is the reproduction that involves the fusion of two gametes or sex cells.,[object Object],The male gametes are called sperms and are produced in the testes.,[object Object],The female gamete is called ova and are produced in the ovaries.,[object Object]
Formation of Zygote,[object Object],Normal body cells have a diploid number of 46 chromosomes.,[object Object],Gametes have the haploid number of 23 chromosomes.,[object Object],When the gametes fuse together, they form a zygote. It will then have the diploid number of 46 chromosomes.,[object Object],The zygote will divide further by cell division or mitosis.,[object Object]
Human Cycle,[object Object]
The Male and Female Gametes or Sex cells,[object Object]
The Sperm – components ,[object Object],HEAD,[object Object],Acrosome of digestive enzymes for breaking down of cell membrane of ovum.,[object Object],Haploid nucleus of 23 chromosomes.,[object Object],MIDDLE-PIECE,[object Object],Mitochondria to produce energy for movement.,[object Object],TAIL,[object Object],Beating movement or flagellum for propulsion,[object Object]
The Sperm – other adaptations,[object Object],STREAM-LINED BODY SHAPE,[object Object],Enables efficient swimming,[object Object],LIGHT AND SMALL,[object Object],Enables fast movement,[object Object]
The Ovum – components ,[object Object],CYTOPLASM,[object Object],Storage of food to enable ovum to survive while awaiting fertilisation,[object Object],NUCLEUS,[object Object],Haploid nucleus of 23 chromosomes,[object Object],OUTER VITALLENE MEMBRANE,[object Object],Hardens after one sperm has penetrated to prevent multiple fertilisation,[object Object]
The Ovum – other adaptations,[object Object],LARGE SIZE,[object Object],Enables sufficient food storage,[object Object],PLASMA CELL MEMBRANE,[object Object],Enables certain materials into the cell,[object Object]
Parts of the Reproductive System,[object Object]
Male Reproductive System,[object Object]
Penis and Erectile tissue,[object Object],An erectile organ and contains erectile tissue.,[object Object],The tissue inside contains spaces to be filled with blood, turning it erect and hard.,[object Object],This enables it to enter the vagina during sex to deposit semen containing sperms.,[object Object]
Urethra and Semen,[object Object],A tube which passes from the bladder to the outside of the body.,[object Object],Semen and urine passes through it to go out of the body at different times.,[object Object],During ejaculation or release of semen, urine does not come out due to the sphincter muscle controlling it. ,[object Object]
Testis and Epididymis,[object Object],Is egg-shaped which produces sperms and male sex hormones called the testosterone.,[object Object],Receives blood from blood vessels in a spermatic cord.,[object Object],Beside each testis lies the epididymis which stores inactive sperms from the testis before entering the sperm duct.,[object Object]
Sperm duct and Seminal vesicle,[object Object],Loops over a ureter and opens up to a uretra. Sperms travel through it after being released from the testes.,[object Object],The seminal vesicle is a gland that opens into each sperm duct.,[object Object],It stores sperms before they are released through the urethra.,[object Object]
Cowper’s , Prostate & other glands,[object Object],Prostate gland is at the base of the urinary bladder where two sperm ducts join the urethra. Cowper’s gland is located beneath.,[object Object],Secrete a slippery fluid which mixes with the sperms.,[object Object],It nourishes the sperms and stimulate them to swim actively.,[object Object]
Female Reproductive System,[object Object]
Ovary and Oviduct,[object Object],They produce eggs and female sex hormones, which are responsible for development of secondary sexual characteristics.,[object Object],When the eggs become mature, they are released from the ovaries.,[object Object],The egg is usually fertilised in the oviduct.,[object Object]
Uterus,[object Object],Also known as the womb, it is where the fetus or embryo develops during pregnancy.,[object Object],The uterus has elastic muscular walls with smooth muscular tissues to push the embryo out during birth.,[object Object],The inner lining of the uterus is the uterus lining that is used for implantation.,[object Object]
Cervix and Vagina,[object Object],The circular ring of muscle at the narrow end of the uterus is the cervix.,[object Object],It enlarges to allow passage of the fetus during birth.,[object Object],Semen is deposited in the vagina during mating through through the opening called the vulva.,[object Object]
Puberty and The Menstrual Cycle,[object Object]
Puberty,[object Object],Puberty is the stage of human growth and development in which a person becomes physical mature.,[object Object],The body begins to change from a child to adult. It begins at 11 for girls and 14 for boys.,[object Object],The reproductive system begins to function. The sex organs mature and start producing gametes.,[object Object]
Changes at Puberty,[object Object],In boys,[object Object],Facial hair, pubic hair, and armpit hair starts growing,[object Object],The penis and testicles increase in size.,[object Object],Production of sperms starts.,[object Object],Voice box enlarges and voice deepens,[object Object],IN GIRLS,[object Object],Pubic hair and armpit hair starts growing.,[object Object],Breasts and uterus enlarge, hips broaden.,[object Object],Menstruation and ovulation start.,[object Object]
Menstruation,[object Object],Menstruation refers to the monthly discharge of blood from the uterus via the vagina.,[object Object],The menstrual period lasts for about 5 days.,[object Object],Menstruation is part of a cycle of events in the female reproductive organ called the menstrual cycle.,[object Object],The average menstrual cycle from an adult woman is 28 days.,[object Object]
The Menstrual Cycle,[object Object],Menstruation in which uterine lining is discharged or broken down. (Day 1 – 5),[object Object],Growth, thickening and repair of uterine lining. (Day 6 – 10),[object Object],Fertile period, sperms likely to cause fertilisation (Day 11 – 17),[object Object],Ovulation in which an ovum is released into the fallopian tube from the ovary. (Day 13 – 15),[object Object]
Fertilisation to Implantation of embryo,[object Object]
Sexual intercourse in fertile period,[object Object],Ovulation occurs and mature eggs are released from the ovaries.,[object Object],One of the ovum fuses with a sperm to form a zygote through fertilisation.,[object Object],Formation of an embryo, hollow ball of cells.,[object Object],Implantation of embryo in the uterine lining.,[object Object],Placenta, amniotic fluid in amniotic sac and the umbilical cord form after implantation during the embryo development.,[object Object]
Development of embryo,[object Object],Amniotic fluids in amniotic sac supports and protects the embryo, allowing it to move freely.,[object Object],Placenta allows diffusion of oxygen, food substances, antibodies and excretory products to and from the embryo’s and mother’s blood.,[object Object],Umbilical cord transports deoxygenated blood from the embryo to placenta and food substances from the placenta to embryo.,[object Object]
When Fertilisation does not occur,[object Object],The ovum breaks down together with uterine lining on the 28th day.,[object Object],The ovum is discharged with the blood in menstruation through the vagina.,[object Object],This marks the start of menstruation and the whole cycle is repeated.,[object Object]
END,[object Object]
