The annual Future of Open Source Survey provides a report on the state of the open source industry and analysis of future trends. Now in its seventh year, this annual survey was supported by 30 collaborators, open source software industry leaders, and collaborating organizations, and compiles results from hundreds of respondents from the open source community.

lots of engineers and developers followed by IT and mgt and CSuite - display the data that way - ensure it emphasizes the quality of and right respondents representing the industry
Question # 3. Which industry will be impacted the most by open source software over the next 2-3 years ?Michael – (1) not new, demonstrated by fact that govt (2) rate of adoption in different industriesTom – government – starting to realize – with sequestration – TCO – customer perspective, head start on particular needs, e.g. DOD – faster time to mkt; real big thing “open govt” – create & share them back – “shared first” – things you create in one part of govt to share in another part of govt.Tim – net new/broadly adopted in fin svcs – lagging vs. leading indicatorJeff- increasingly/broadly adopted in mediaCould be good grist for the panel discussion: why did Gov’t rank so highly? Seems to be a different interpretation of the question/use of open source than the other industries, i.e., Gov’t end-user use of OSS vs. IT and tech consumption of OSS to build products/apps/services.
Tim –comment on medicalRob – Big Data/health care records
4. How important are the following factors to the adoption of open source?Ed – customer perspective – first two resonate – perceptions are changing around OSS being on-par with proprietary – more open to putting it into more strategic products; lock-in freedom-being worked over by a few large vendors – server-to CPU- Core-?? Need to control their costs, open source is a viable avenue; 3rd is “capability” – in forefront, flexibility of libraries, useful, not trending….MJS – OS projects that are on par or better?
6. When choosing between open source projects for integration into your products, services or applications, how important are the following factors in your decision making ?Jeff – larger seachange in way applications are built – capabilities or features that would have made commercial products more attractive – if you look at what’s going on, reality is – many OS projects are more competitive – new technology for everyone due to innovation quality of projects; less concerned about licensing, look to best price/performance – leading on the features, not just costTim – couple with #1 point customers see it as strong quality & better featuresJeff – what is competitive – not everything, but I can deploy on AWS – nature of featuresTom – no longer a need for support? Pivotal HD example, product is superior, but complex, need help to deploy – 1200 person spinout of VMWare; GE ; make case that Commercial Vendor support less of an issue, when it’s needed, it’s out there and spectacular, not so much angst around community or vendors – more confident that there are support options Ethos note: trending question/adoption – visual slide Slide 21
6. When choosing between open source projects for integration into your products, services or applications, how important are the following factors in your decision making ?Tim: Rate of improvementEd: TR perspective; security is a board level priority; up practices and tooling; also covers OSWould you consider OS more secure – transparency, many eyes on the problem, fully documented; scrutinize any issues Ethos note: trending question/adoption – visual slide Slide 21

Tim or Jeff – one of the darlings is Twilio
16. In the software industry, there is growing interest in open APIs, used to access web andcloud-based services. What is the extent of your experience with open APIs? MJS – moving up stack fastTom – why is OS important in Content Mgt – innovation is the key, meeting the speed of the web, social has happened and old platforms can’t move, Sharepoint takes 3 years, need to integrate, not just an adjunctEd – as a customer? Leave top off in discussion.11. In what areas are open source products a superior alternative to proprietary products ? Two slides - #1 & #2 expected, build to #3 which is interesting…
8. In your opinion, how important are the following reasons for engaging directly with andcontributing to an open source community:Tim leads & Ed: Rise of roles like Eds, trying to collaborate, different development methodologies#2 resonates with Ed, he is bombarded by technologists who want to contribute.
8. In your opinion, how important are the following reasons for engaging directly with andcontributing to an open source community:Jeff - indicative of an understanding that when it comes to implementation, not OS as a concept, if you want water, go to well – need implementation experience, beyond tire kicking, beyond initial adoption to scale up/ramp up.Ed – if you were going to hire someone – what are commercial support costs around OS – large scale components that don’t have support – not enough spend to justify – he prefers broad with methods – that pays off, one team developing using OS methods, onboard new team members in a fraction of the time, several fold quality increase.
13. I turn to the following as a trusted source for my open source software needs: Rob – speak to this; Tim supportsTim will comment

17. Which of the following revenue generation strategies are likely to create the most valuefor open source vendors over the next 2 years ? Tom: Elementary – it’s on the rise; helps take non-monetizable and make it easy for community to adopt; speed is much bigger than one could have expected; see in all parts of the business; Open Stack –takes cost out of infrastructure – SaaS can offer a more compelling solution using underlying OS, cost of delivering service is lower, organizations are using them, freeing up capital and deploy to other things.
