How To Choose The Best Anti-Snoring Device?
Snoring can be a disruption to a good sleep, for the person
who snores and definitely for your loved one that sleeps with
you. So in a search for help, you look at the different products
on the market that claim to help. But you don’t want to
choose one that is painful, uncomfortable and interrupts your
sleep.
Sleep is essential to our health and getting a good night of
sleep is the key to good health.
Even for a person that sleeps alone and their snoring isn’t a
disruption to other people, it is disruptive for that person’s
body & mind. Snoring keeps the body & mind alert, and they
aren’t getting the rest that is essential to good health. For the
person that endures poor sleeping every night, it can and will
affect their life both personally and professionally.
Today, there are many products on the market that have proven to be the effective to stop snoring. These anti-snoring
mouthpieces are comfortable enough that you won’t realize you have one on after you get used to them.
These oral devices are less expensive than other options, such as a CPAP machine or surgery. In addition to stopping
snoring they actually improve your breathing too. That alone makes them a better choice than just ignoring your
snoring they actually improve your breathing too. That alone makes them a better choice than just ignoring your
snoring problem, right?
Ignoring snoring problems doesn’t mean they simply goes away. Snoring has effects that are long-term which can be
severe and life-threatening. Especially when snoring and sleep apnea are somewhat related to each other. Those that
suffer from snoring are prone to risks like cancer, heart disease, and hypertension, and including strokes. And the
danger of operating a car or machinery when you haven’t gotten a good, restful night of sleep is another danger
altogether.
Some manufacturers claim that their devices have more than 90 percent effectiveness, which sounds great when you
aren’t sleeping well. But if you are looking for even better devices, are others that are 98 percent effective, which is
even better for the person who snores and those around them.
As you review the different products in our site, consider the fact that the
differences in effectiveness and satisfaction are based on individual use of each one. Clicking on each product and
reading the review will give you an idea what customers have said about each one.
This will allow you to make an informed decision with accurate estimates and results of many different studies by
reputable medical experts and sources. One example was a study of over 130 patients that used anti-snore
mouthpieces and the impressive results were published for the public to review.
Even when the study was complete, over 85 percent of the participants continued using the oral appliance they were
issued each night. Another study was conducted in 2005 on twenty heavy snorers with MAD (mandibular advancement
device) to each one. It was concluded that the device was tolerated well and provided a viable treatment to end the
participant’s snoring. Similar results have been found from several other studies.
One of the most practical solutions for those who snore is the oral appliances that are on the market today. But there
are things that anyone who is considering them should know. There are two categories of these devices:
Mandibular Advancement Devices (MADs)
Tongue Stabilizing Devices (TSDs)
While these two categories may seem to be the same, there are some differences. Let’s take a look at the features of
each one and how they can provide you relief from those noisy nights of sleep.
Tongue Stabilizing Devices (TSD)
A tongue stabilizing device (TSD) aka a tongue retaining device (TRD) minimize and even
stop a person’s snoring by holding their tongue in a set position. As we sleep, our muscles and tongue become
relaxed, and this allows the tongue to drop back into our throat. Tongue blocks or constricts the airway, which results in
a vibration, otherwise known as snoring.
To inhibit this from occurring the tongue needs to be kept in set position during sleep. A TSD will create a safe vacuum
and keep the tongue in a set position. Then the airway isn’t blocked or otherwise restricted, and the snoring stops.
Safety and Comfort
There are two factors that are essential when selecting your anti-snoring device:
Comfort and Safety. If a product works well but isn’t comfortable or has risks in using it, then it isn’t the solution you
need.
With a TSD, you can wear it and be completely relaxed at the same time. It stays in place without having to bite down
on it, meaning, you don’t have to work at trying to sleep. An example of the opposite would be an anti-snoring pillow.
Those require that you maintain your head in place before it does any good. So if you roll over to your side, it quits
working and you begin to snore again.
A TSD will work no matter how you lay with the exception of sleeping on your stomach. You can roll from side to side,
and it will ease, even eliminate, your snoring. These devices typically are made of silicone material that is medical-grade
standard. This means they won’t irritate your gums, lips or tongue, and they are found to be a solution that is
comfortable.
The bottom line about TSD devices it that they are safe and they work. This allows you to get a good night of quality
sleep without snoring.
Effectiveness
As you look at the effectiveness of TSDs, they are the poster item of a good night’s rest. No doubt about it that there
are plenty of other devices that are said to prevent snoring, but they all aren’t as effective as claimed.
Looking at TSD’s records, the effective rate is suggestively higher than the average 80 percent other products boast
about. They have become the most popular because they are affordable, comfortable and most of all, they work.
Considerations
For the person that suffers from allergies or has a cold, they shouldn’t wear a TSD
until their allergies clear up, or their cold has gone. When you have a stopped up nose, wearing a TSD can cause you to
gag all night long, totally eliminating the benefits of a TSD.
There are other things you can do during those times that may help like nasal strips or using natural essence oils. As
well as herbs like bayberry root, black elderberry, eucalyptus, eyebright, and neroli can do wonders for nasal
congestion.
Some people have reported the tip of their tongue was sore with their first use of a TSD, but it subsided after four to
seven days. Soreness has been experienced at the gums as well. To minimize this happening, be sure to get a level of
suction to attach the tongue to the device so that it isn’t painful. This may take a few times to discover the place it is
right for you.
Mandibular Advancement Devices (MAD)
Another type of mouthpiece that stops snoring is the MAD (mandibular advancement device), also
referred to as a jaw retaining mouthpiece. With this device, your lower jaw is held in a forward position which stops
the snoring.
Where the TSD stops the tongue from falling back and blocking or constricting the air flow, the MAD works by moving
your jaw forward and keeps it from dropping to your chest. For the person that sleeps on their back, the MAD is the
better device choice.
Fitting Process
Jaw-retaining mouth guard utilizes a technology called boil-and-bite fitting process. It may sound somewhat
complicated, but it works well and is worth the process for a good, quality night of sleep.
The molding components of the mouth card need to be softened before use, and this is done by place it in boiling water.
After it softens ups, you remove the mouth guard and allow it to sit and cool down a bit. While still warm, but in a safe
temperature, insert the mouth guard in your mouth and then firmly bite down. As you bite down, the softer material
molds to custom fit your gums and teeth. The MADs will encourage you to bite down which will create tension in your
jaw that holds it in position.
The MADs don’t have the same appeal as the TSDs, but they are just as effective. For anyone that has an easy gag
reflex, this unit will most likely choke you the first time, but once it is correctly fitted, this device will deliver the same
high level of anti-snore comfort and effectiveness as the TSDs.
What to Expect
It can take time for the jaw to get accustomed to an MAD and soreness should be expected. You can akin this to your
first time when you wore contact lens. It was dreadful and a bit uncomfortable at first, but soon you realized the
enjoyment they gave you with a clear vision. Most of the time you probably don’t even notice you have them in now,
right? The same is to be said about MADs. After a short time of getting accustom to it, you won’t even notice it.
However, if you have pain for more than 2 weeks, you may want to look at other options. The experience you will have
is dependent upon the product you choose. The less expensive devices are more prone to cause a gag reaction because
they will cover your molars.
The past few years has seen some great progress in jaw holding devices when it comes to a good fit and quality. The
better quality devices provide a better fit, and there are some that offer features that are really thoughtful such as a
design that have very little to no discomfort.
There are some devices that have built-in adjustment mechanism like the feature offine-adjustment which is some
user’s opinion is better than the new features micro-adjustments. There are models that have measurement scales
which are visible and allow the user to track of their adjustments.
The safety level is dictated by the adjustment provided, but that doesn’t mean that there are problems with each and
every MAD that doesn’t have adjustment potential. These devices are also helpful when it comes to teeth grinding too.
The jaw-holding feature will keep your teeth from grinding against each other causing damage while it stops the snoring
too.
Comfort &
Adjustability
As we discussed earlier in this article, the more a device is adjustable, the better you’ll be able to find a comfortable fit
and it should be your top priority when looking for a snoring mouth guard device. If it doesn’t fit comfortable, then it
will make sleeping difficult, giving you a poor night’s rest, which is what you’re trying to improve already.
The TSDs are not adjustable and for them, it isn’t necessary. But the MADs are adjustable and with theboil-and-
bite feature of some, as well as the incremental adjustability, you’re sure to a perfect fit each and every time. The boil-
and-bite devices are a rough fit, but when complimented by adjustment that is incremental so that you can fine-tune
your own fit, you will end up with a very comfortable device.
Boil-and-Bite Customization
Mouths are like snowflakes, and no two are alike. As such, if you decide to go with a MAD, it is mostimportant that it
be allowed to conform to your mouth’s exact shape. This can be achieved with the majority of devices that are on the
market today with the technology known as “boil and bite.” You simply bring a pot of water to a boil and drop the device
in. The boiling water will soften the material and then you take it out and let it sit and cool down to a temperature that
is safe. Once it has cooled, place the device in your mouth then bite down.
The firm pressure of your bite will allow it to be customized for your gums and teeth. Some people have claimed the
device can be remolded 5 times, which is an important aspect of the product. Because the more the device can be
remolded, the better for you since many people’s mouths change over time.
For a thorough customization, there are dental impression kits on the market too, which are a bit more expensive. The
manufacturer of these MADs will send you a mouth tray with enough molding clay to get an exact impression on the
tray of your teeth.
After you have your impression on the tray, you mail the kit back to the manufacturer, and they will produce an oral
device that is a customized fit for you. This allows you to get that precise fit, but the downside is the turn-around time
can take a few weeks to receive your final product.
Breathing holes vs no breathing
holes
Not all of the oral devices on the market have breathing holes, but not everyone that snores need holes either. Those
who have sinus problems or other type of medical condition where their airflow is restricted through their nasal cavity
should use the mouth guard that has a breathing hole. These are especially ideal for the people that sleep open-mouth.
If you select an oral device with holes, be sure to get one which holes aren’t so small your lungs can’t get any air. Nor
do you want one that has too large holes which will keep your mouth forced open and uncomfortable. There could be a
whistling sound coming from the breathing holes that is caused by the airflow. You may also experience a dry mouth
and throat.
Life expectancy of the stop snoring
mouthpiece
Some people buy a snoring mouthpiece and assume that it will last forever. This is an unrealistic expectation. Keep in
mind that you will be wearing this device daily for about one-third of the time. As such, you will need to replace it
frequently.
Value and Affordability
The chart that we provided will make it easy to see which products have a longer life
expectancy (usually six to twelve months.) Some brands recommend replacing your device every 3 months and some
may say they last as long as 15 months. So consider the replacement rates in determining the cost and your ROI as one
factor in making a decision.
By choosing a more durable product, it may cost more, but it will last longer and thus, comes out the better value.
Also, take into consideration the amount you sleep each night. The less you sleep, the less you’ll use your device, which
will add to its longevity.
Things You Should Know
The uvula is located in the middle of the soft palate inside your mouth. It is a conic projection, and when your throat
tissue comes in contact with it, your airway is obstructed. These two elements vibrate and thus, the snoring sound
is created. Not only anyone that is sleeping near you kept awake, but you aren’t getting enough air either.
There are several reasons why you may snore. It can be from being in a state of deep sleep or from consuming
alcohol or sleeping pills. And then there are those people who are nasal snorers, meaning that the sound coming
from them could be caused by various reasons. Some of those reasons may be a deviated septum, enlarged tonsils
or nasal polyps. Even being overweight can cause a person to snore.
Why do people snore?
A MAD (mandibular advancement device) is a mouth guard that reduces or eliminates snoring by moving your jaw
forward. It is placed between your upper and lower teeth, and then the muscles and tissues are tightened in your
upper airway. When your jaw is kept forward, gravity won’t be able to pull it down and toward your throat, keeping
it from constricting your airway. The device is inserted in your mouth just before you go to bed. They have become
very popular in America, Canada, and the UK.
A tongue stabilizing device is similar to an MAD as far as the approach. However, it fits on the tip of the tongue by
squeezing a bulb on the unit prior to positioning your tongue against it. After your tongue is in place, release the
bulb so that a vacuum is created which will keep your tongue from falling against your throat and keep your airway
clear.
The majority of the oral devices on the market today have a couple of tabs protruding from the outer lips. This is to
keep your tongue and your device in the right forward position. These units are not as popular as the MAD units,
but they aren’t as intrusive but just as effective.
The life expectancy can vary with these products, each being a little different. From the chart, you’ll see that the
average life expectancy is six to eighteen months for most. But this can vary based on how much you use it and
each person’s sleeping habits are different. A device that lasts for eighteen months for one person may only last
twelve months for somebody else.
For anyone that grinds their teeth, more frequent replacement may be necessary. You can get custom fitted devices
from your dentist which have a longer lifespan – sometimes even years long.
How does an MAD work?
How does a TSD work?
How long do stop snoring mouthpieces last?
For somebody that wears dentures, TSD’s are helpful in stopping the snoring. This type of device does not require
the wearer to bite down to keep it in position, so no teeth are needed. The outside of the lips is where the majority
of the device will sit.
On the other hand, it is suggested that denture wearers do not use MAD option because biting down is required. If a
MAD product states that it is denture-compatible, you will need to wear your dentures while you sleep.
Discomfort and soreness are common in the face and jaw areas when you first begin to wear a MAD device. This is
from the muscles being involuntary forced to stay tensed and then being held in a position that is unnatural. Just
like any part of the body where the muscles are worked different, soreness should be expected.
This soreness will usually last for 3 to 7 days as the face becomes accustom to the unnatural positioning. However,
if the pain doesn’t ease, you may need to find another option or visit your dentist.
This is a great thing about these mouth guards. They do two things at once:Stop the snoring and stop the teeth
grinding. The majority of the devices are made of a dental type material that you position between the 2 rows of
your teeth, which stops the teeth grinding. It is recommended to check with the manufacturer of a dental guard to
verify their recommendation of using the product for this purpose.
This can be answered by a yes and by a no. Both MAD and TSD devices are categorized under the FDA’s title “Class
II Medical Device”. As such, a prescription for these products is required. But because the directions are adequate
on how to use the device as per the Code of Federal Regulations, it has created a loophole around that requirement.
The devices with a breathing hole will allow you to breathe by mouth. If this is a concern, be sure to buy a device
with the proper size of hole. Too wide will keep your jaw open too wide and too small of a hold will obstruct the
airflow.
It is essential to keep your device clean and disinfected for your overall health and both types of this device is easy
to do that. Most models can be cleaned with your toothbrush and your toothpaste. There are a few models that will
require a special cleaning solution. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions is always recommended.
You’ll definitely want to take into consideration how much care is needed when selecting a device. They will all have

to be cleaned, but if there is one that requires a special solution, that does add to the overall cost. Always be
conscious of the crevices and crannies of your device where bacteria will harbor and grow.
These devices have been approved by the Health Canada’s Therapeutic Products Directorate and the U.S. Food and
Drug Administration as safe and do not pose any choking hazard. Nonetheless, it is not unheard of hazardous items
being approved in prior times, and while this doesn’t always apply necessarily to mouthpieces, you should keep in
mind the cars, food, toys, and other items that are recalled periodically as a safety precaution. There isn’t anything
that can be granted a totally guaranteed 100%, but when these agencies have approved items, it is expected that
you won’t experience any problems.
The “boil-and-bite” term is used frequently when we are talking about stop snoring mouthpieces. This is a method
used to give you a customized fit with some of the anti-snoring devices. The products that utilize this method are
placed in boiling water briefly to soften the material. Then it is removed and allowed to cool down to a safe
temperature. It is then placed in your mouth and you bite firmly to create that customized fit.
This is the less expensive option in oral devices when compared to dental impression kits. An impression kit much
like a dentist uses that will come with clay that is placed in a tray. You bite firmly into the clay then return it to the
manufacturer where their laboratory will create your customized device.
Well it really depends on who you talk to and what their results were. Ask a manufacturer and they will claim
anywhere from 94% to 98% effectiveness or they may phrase it as 90% or more satisfaction rate. When it comes
to effectiveness and satisfaction, keep mind they are different. Your best bet is to review the medical studies from
reputable sources for numbers you can count on.
These products are not recommended to be used by children due to the fact their mouth and teeth are still
developing.
The material for these oral devices can usually be heated and cooled 2 to 3 times safely for the most part. With that
being said, there is no need to worry about getting the first bite perfect. You have the ability to boil and bite again.
This simply means the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has examined the products and did not find any cause
for concern to the public’s general health and safety. The agency is responsible for the public’s wellbeing of using
any cosmetics, drugs, food, medical devices and other such products by preforming rigorous testing.

any cosmetics, drugs, food, medical devices and other such products by preforming rigorous testing.
This is a question to ask your primary care doctor or your dentist. It is the advice of most device manufactures not
to use their product if you have TMJ because it can cause the symptoms to worsen.
Sellers of these devices will ask customers some basic questions in regards to your oral health so they can certify
that the product you have selected fits good. It is also providing them legal protection, so be completely honest in
how you’re answering their questions.
There are some conditions that need to be considered when purchasing one of these devices, such as:
It should be purchased only for it its intended purpose.
Manufacturer’s instructions should be followed.
It should be approved by the FDA or other trusted regulatory agency.
Persons with gum disease, loose teeth, or TMJ, should consult with their dentist before using these devices as
they could worsen.

Snoring can be a disruption to a good sleep, for the person who snores and definitely for your loved one that sleeps with you. So in a search for help, you look at the different products on the market that claim to help. But you don’t want to choose one that is painful, uncomfortable and interrupts your sleep. Sleep is essential to our health and getting a good night of sleep is the key to good health. Even for a person that sleeps alone and their snoring isn’t a disruption to other people, it is disruptive for that person’s body & mind. Snoring keeps the body & mind alert, and they aren’t getting the rest that is essential to good health. For the person that endures poor sleeping every night, it can and will affect their life both personally and professionally. Today, there are many products on the market that have proven to be the effective to stop snoring. These anti-snoring mouthpieces are comfortable enough that you won’t realize you have one on after you get used to them. These oral devices are less expensive than other options, such as a CPAP machine or surgery. In addition to stopping snoring they actually improve your breathing too. • 6. snoring they actually improve your breathing too. That alone makes them a better choice than just ignoring your snoring problem, right? Ignoring snoring problems doesn’t mean they simply goes away. Snoring has effects that are long-term which can be severe and life-threatening. Especially when snoring and sleep apnea are somewhat related to each other. Those that suffer from snoring are prone to risks like cancer, heart disease, and hypertension, and including strokes. And the danger of operating a car or machinery when you haven’t gotten a good, restful night of sleep is another danger altogether. Some manufacturers claim that their devices have more than 90 percent effectiveness, which sounds great when you aren’t sleeping well. But if you are looking for even better devices, are others that are 98 percent effective, which is even better for the person who snores and those around them. As you review the different products in our site, consider the fact that the differences in effectiveness and satisfaction are based on individual use of each one. Clicking on each product and reading the review will give you an idea what customers have said about each one. This will allow you to make an informed decision with accurate estimates and results of many different studies by reputable medical experts and sources. One example was a study of over 130 patients that used anti-snore mouthpieces and the impressive results were published for the public to review. Even when the study was complete, over 85 percent of the participants continued using the oral appliance they were issued each night. Another study was conducted in 2005 on twenty heavy snorers with MAD (mandibular advancement device) to each one. It was concluded that the device was tolerated well and provided a viable treatment to end the participant’s snoring. Similar results have been found from several other studies. One of the most practical solutions for those who snore is the oral appliances that are on the market today. But there are things that anyone who is considering them should know. There are two categories of these devices: Mandibular Advancement Devices (MADs) Tongue Stabilizing Devices (TSDs) While these two categories may seem to be the same, there are some differences. Let’s take a look at the features of each one and how they can provide you relief from those noisy nights of sleep. Tongue Stabilizing Devices (TSD)
  • 7. A tongue stabilizing device (TSD) aka a tongue retaining device (TRD) minimize and even stop a person’s snoring by holding their tongue in a set position. As we sleep, our muscles and tongue become relaxed, and this allows the tongue to drop back into our throat. Tongue blocks or constricts the airway, which results in a vibration, otherwise known as snoring. To inhibit this from occurring the tongue needs to be kept in set position during sleep. A TSD will create a safe vacuum and keep the tongue in a set position. Then the airway isn’t blocked or otherwise restricted, and the snoring stops. Safety and Comfort There are two factors that are essential when selecting your anti-snoring device: Comfort and Safety. If a product works well but isn’t comfortable or has risks in using it, then it isn’t the solution you need. With a TSD, you can wear it and be completely relaxed at the same time. It stays in place without having to bite down on it, meaning, you don’t have to work at trying to sleep. An example of the opposite would be an anti-snoring pillow. Those require that you maintain your head in place before it does any good. So if you roll over to your side, it quits working and you begin to snore again. A TSD will work no matter how you lay with the exception of sleeping on your stomach. You can roll from side to side, and it will ease, even eliminate, your snoring. These devices typically are made of silicone material that is medical-grade standard. This means they won’t irritate your gums, lips or tongue, and they are found to be a solution that is comfortable. The bottom line about TSD devices it that they are safe and they work. This allows you to get a good night of quality sleep without snoring. Effectiveness As you look at the effectiveness of TSDs, they are the poster item of a good night’s rest. No doubt about it that there are plenty of other devices that are said to prevent snoring, but they all aren’t as effective as claimed. Looking at TSD’s records, the effective rate is suggestively higher than the average 80 percent other products boast
  • 8. about. They have become the most popular because they are affordable, comfortable and most of all, they work. Considerations For the person that suffers from allergies or has a cold, they shouldn’t wear a TSD until their allergies clear up, or their cold has gone. When you have a stopped up nose, wearing a TSD can cause you to gag all night long, totally eliminating the benefits of a TSD. There are other things you can do during those times that may help like nasal strips or using natural essence oils. As well as herbs like bayberry root, black elderberry, eucalyptus, eyebright, and neroli can do wonders for nasal congestion. Some people have reported the tip of their tongue was sore with their first use of a TSD, but it subsided after four to seven days. Soreness has been experienced at the gums as well. To minimize this happening, be sure to get a level of suction to attach the tongue to the device so that it isn’t painful. This may take a few times to discover the place it is right for you. Mandibular Advancement Devices (MAD) Another type of mouthpiece that stops snoring is the MAD (mandibular advancement device), also referred to as a jaw retaining mouthpiece. With this device, your lower jaw is held in a forward position which stops the snoring. Where the TSD stops the tongue from falling back and blocking or constricting the air flow, the MAD works by moving your jaw forward and keeps it from dropping to your chest. For the person that sleeps on their back, the MAD is the better device choice. Fitting Process Jaw-retaining mouth guard utilizes a technology called boil-and-bite fitting process. It may sound somewhat complicated, but it works well and is worth the process for a good, quality night of sleep.
  • 9. The molding components of the mouth card need to be softened before use, and this is done by place it in boiling water. After it softens ups, you remove the mouth guard and allow it to sit and cool down a bit. While still warm, but in a safe temperature, insert the mouth guard in your mouth and then firmly bite down. As you bite down, the softer material molds to custom fit your gums and teeth. The MADs will encourage you to bite down which will create tension in your jaw that holds it in position. The MADs don’t have the same appeal as the TSDs, but they are just as effective. For anyone that has an easy gag reflex, this unit will most likely choke you the first time, but once it is correctly fitted, this device will deliver the same high level of anti-snore comfort and effectiveness as the TSDs. What to Expect It can take time for the jaw to get accustomed to an MAD and soreness should be expected. You can akin this to your first time when you wore contact lens. It was dreadful and a bit uncomfortable at first, but soon you realized the enjoyment they gave you with a clear vision. Most of the time you probably don’t even notice you have them in now, right? The same is to be said about MADs. After a short time of getting accustom to it, you won’t even notice it. However, if you have pain for more than 2 weeks, you may want to look at other options. The experience you will have is dependent upon the product you choose. The less expensive devices are more prone to cause a gag reaction because they will cover your molars. The past few years has seen some great progress in jaw holding devices when it comes to a good fit and quality. The better quality devices provide a better fit, and there are some that offer features that are really thoughtful such as a design that have very little to no discomfort. There are some devices that have built-in adjustment mechanism like the feature offine-adjustment which is some user’s opinion is better than the new features micro-adjustments. There are models that have measurement scales which are visible and allow the user to track of their adjustments. The safety level is dictated by the adjustment provided, but that doesn’t mean that there are problems with each and every MAD that doesn’t have adjustment potential. These devices are also helpful when it comes to teeth grinding too. The jaw-holding feature will keep your teeth from grinding against each other causing damage while it stops the snoring too.
  • 10. Comfort & Adjustability As we discussed earlier in this article, the more a device is adjustable, the better you’ll be able to find a comfortable fit and it should be your top priority when looking for a snoring mouth guard device. If it doesn’t fit comfortable, then it will make sleeping difficult, giving you a poor night’s rest, which is what you’re trying to improve already. The TSDs are not adjustable and for them, it isn’t necessary. But the MADs are adjustable and with theboil-and- bite feature of some, as well as the incremental adjustability, you’re sure to a perfect fit each and every time. The boil- and-bite devices are a rough fit, but when complimented by adjustment that is incremental so that you can fine-tune your own fit, you will end up with a very comfortable device. Boil-and-Bite Customization Mouths are like snowflakes, and no two are alike. As such, if you decide to go with a MAD, it is mostimportant that it be allowed to conform to your mouth’s exact shape. This can be achieved with the majority of devices that are on the market today with the technology known as “boil and bite.” You simply bring a pot of water to a boil and drop the device in. The boiling water will soften the material and then you take it out and let it sit and cool down to a temperature that is safe. Once it has cooled, place the device in your mouth then bite down. The firm pressure of your bite will allow it to be customized for your gums and teeth. Some people have claimed the device can be remolded 5 times, which is an important aspect of the product. Because the more the device can be remolded, the better for you since many people’s mouths change over time. For a thorough customization, there are dental impression kits on the market too, which are a bit more expensive. The manufacturer of these MADs will send you a mouth tray with enough molding clay to get an exact impression on the tray of your teeth. After you have your impression on the tray, you mail the kit back to the manufacturer, and they will produce an oral device that is a customized fit for you. This allows you to get that precise fit, but the downside is the turn-around time can take a few weeks to receive your final product. Breathing holes vs no breathing holes
  • 11. Not all of the oral devices on the market have breathing holes, but not everyone that snores need holes either. Those who have sinus problems or other type of medical condition where their airflow is restricted through their nasal cavity should use the mouth guard that has a breathing hole. These are especially ideal for the people that sleep open-mouth. If you select an oral device with holes, be sure to get one which holes aren’t so small your lungs can’t get any air. Nor do you want one that has too large holes which will keep your mouth forced open and uncomfortable. There could be a whistling sound coming from the breathing holes that is caused by the airflow. You may also experience a dry mouth and throat. Life expectancy of the stop snoring mouthpiece Some people buy a snoring mouthpiece and assume that it will last forever. This is an unrealistic expectation. Keep in mind that you will be wearing this device daily for about one-third of the time. As such, you will need to replace it frequently. Value and Affordability The chart that we provided will make it easy to see which products have a longer life expectancy (usually six to twelve months.) Some brands recommend replacing your device every 3 months and some may say they last as long as 15 months. So consider the replacement rates in determining the cost and your ROI as one factor in making a decision. By choosing a more durable product, it may cost more, but it will last longer and thus, comes out the better value. Also, take into consideration the amount you sleep each night. The less you sleep, the less you’ll use your device, which will add to its longevity. Things You Should Know The uvula is located in the middle of the soft palate inside your mouth. It is a conic projection, and when your throat tissue comes in contact with it, your airway is obstructed. These two elements vibrate and thus, the snoring sound is created. Not only anyone that is sleeping near you kept awake, but you aren’t getting enough air either. There are several reasons why you may snore. It can be from being in a state of deep sleep or from consuming alcohol or sleeping pills. And then there are those people who are nasal snorers, meaning that the sound coming from them could be caused by various reasons. Some of those reasons may be a deviated septum, enlarged tonsils or nasal polyps. Even being overweight can cause a person to snore. Why do people snore?
  • 12. A MAD (mandibular advancement device) is a mouth guard that reduces or eliminates snoring by moving your jaw forward. It is placed between your upper and lower teeth, and then the muscles and tissues are tightened in your upper airway. When your jaw is kept forward, gravity won’t be able to pull it down and toward your throat, keeping it from constricting your airway. The device is inserted in your mouth just before you go to bed. They have become very popular in America, Canada, and the UK. A tongue stabilizing device is similar to an MAD as far as the approach. However, it fits on the tip of the tongue by squeezing a bulb on the unit prior to positioning your tongue against it. After your tongue is in place, release the bulb so that a vacuum is created which will keep your tongue from falling against your throat and keep your airway clear. The majority of the oral devices on the market today have a couple of tabs protruding from the outer lips. This is to keep your tongue and your device in the right forward position. These units are not as popular as the MAD units, but they aren’t as intrusive but just as effective. The life expectancy can vary with these products, each being a little different. From the chart, you’ll see that the average life expectancy is six to eighteen months for most. But this can vary based on how much you use it and each person’s sleeping habits are different. A device that lasts for eighteen months for one person may only last twelve months for somebody else. For anyone that grinds their teeth, more frequent replacement may be necessary. You can get custom fitted devices from your dentist which have a longer lifespan – sometimes even years long. How does an MAD work? How does a TSD work? How long do stop snoring mouthpieces last?
  • 13. For somebody that wears dentures, TSD’s are helpful in stopping the snoring. This type of device does not require the wearer to bite down to keep it in position, so no teeth are needed. The outside of the lips is where the majority of the device will sit. On the other hand, it is suggested that denture wearers do not use MAD option because biting down is required. If a MAD product states that it is denture-compatible, you will need to wear your dentures while you sleep. Discomfort and soreness are common in the face and jaw areas when you first begin to wear a MAD device. This is from the muscles being involuntary forced to stay tensed and then being held in a position that is unnatural. Just like any part of the body where the muscles are worked different, soreness should be expected. This soreness will usually last for 3 to 7 days as the face becomes accustom to the unnatural positioning. However, if the pain doesn’t ease, you may need to find another option or visit your dentist. This is a great thing about these mouth guards. They do two things at once:Stop the snoring and stop the teeth grinding. The majority of the devices are made of a dental type material that you position between the 2 rows of your teeth, which stops the teeth grinding. It is recommended to check with the manufacturer of a dental guard to verify their recommendation of using the product for this purpose. This can be answered by a yes and by a no. Both MAD and TSD devices are categorized under the FDA’s title “Class II Medical Device”. As such, a prescription for these products is required. But because the directions are adequate on how to use the device as per the Code of Federal Regulations, it has created a loophole around that requirement. The devices with a breathing hole will allow you to breathe by mouth. If this is a concern, be sure to buy a device with the proper size of hole. Too wide will keep your jaw open too wide and too small of a hold will obstruct the airflow. It is essential to keep your device clean and disinfected for your overall health and both types of this device is easy to do that. Most models can be cleaned with your toothbrush and your toothpaste. There are a few models that will require a special cleaning solution. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions is always recommended. You’ll definitely want to take into consideration how much care is needed when selecting a device. They will all have Can anti-snoring mouthpieces be worn with dentures? Will a MAD make my mouth sore? Will it help with teeth grinding? Do I need a prescription to order snore guard? Can I breathe through my mouth while wearing my stop snoring device? How do I clean my MAD or TSD?
  • 14. to be cleaned, but if there is one that requires a special solution, that does add to the overall cost. Always be conscious of the crevices and crannies of your device where bacteria will harbor and grow. These devices have been approved by the Health Canada’s Therapeutic Products Directorate and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as safe and do not pose any choking hazard. Nonetheless, it is not unheard of hazardous items being approved in prior times, and while this doesn’t always apply necessarily to mouthpieces, you should keep in mind the cars, food, toys, and other items that are recalled periodically as a safety precaution. There isn’t anything that can be granted a totally guaranteed 100%, but when these agencies have approved items, it is expected that you won’t experience any problems. The “boil-and-bite” term is used frequently when we are talking about stop snoring mouthpieces. This is a method used to give you a customized fit with some of the anti-snoring devices. The products that utilize this method are placed in boiling water briefly to soften the material. Then it is removed and allowed to cool down to a safe temperature. It is then placed in your mouth and you bite firmly to create that customized fit. This is the less expensive option in oral devices when compared to dental impression kits. An impression kit much like a dentist uses that will come with clay that is placed in a tray. You bite firmly into the clay then return it to the manufacturer where their laboratory will create your customized device. Well it really depends on who you talk to and what their results were. Ask a manufacturer and they will claim anywhere from 94% to 98% effectiveness or they may phrase it as 90% or more satisfaction rate. When it comes to effectiveness and satisfaction, keep mind they are different. Your best bet is to review the medical studies from reputable sources for numbers you can count on. These products are not recommended to be used by children due to the fact their mouth and teeth are still developing. The material for these oral devices can usually be heated and cooled 2 to 3 times safely for the most part. With that being said, there is no need to worry about getting the first bite perfect. You have the ability to boil and bite again. This simply means the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has examined the products and did not find any cause for concern to the public’s general health and safety. The agency is responsible for the public’s wellbeing of using any cosmetics, drugs, food, medical devices and other such products by preforming rigorous testing. • 15. any cosmetics, drugs, food, medical devices and other such products by preforming rigorous testing. This is a question to ask your primary care doctor or your dentist. It is the advice of most device manufactures not to use their product if you have TMJ because it can cause the symptoms to worsen. Sellers of these devices will ask customers some basic questions in regards to your oral health so they can certify that the product you have selected fits good. It is also providing them legal protection, so be completely honest in how you’re answering their questions. There are some conditions that need to be considered when purchasing one of these devices, such as: It should be purchased only for it its intended purpose.
