2. The lion was not ready to go back to the bull’s cave.
The jackal suggested, “There is nothing to fear! If
you do not believe me, then tie your tail with mine.
I will lead you to the bull’s cave and attack him first.
If the bull retaliates, then I will be the one who will
be killed first. And if this happens, you will have
enough time to save your life.” The lion agreed to
this plan of action prepared by the jackal. Both of
them tied their tails together and set off to the
bull’s cave.
When the bull saw the lion coming with the jackal,
he understood that the sly jackal had poked into
his plan. But without panicking, the bull addressed
the jackal in a firm tone,“Useless jackal! I had asked
you to bring me two lions and you appear with
only one skinny one. Do you want me to keep my
children hungry?”
Even this time, the lion did not realize that the bull
was again fooling him. He was petrified and ran as
fast as he could, dragging the jackal with him over
stones and thorns. The clever bull thus outwitted
his enemies and lived a peaceful and happy life
thereafter.
Once there lived a big and strong bull in a forest. He
had made his home in a cave near a pond. There
was no dearth of lush green grass near his cave and
he was merrily passing his days.
One day, a lion happened to visit that side of the
forest. He saw the healthy bull resting outside his
cave and was instantly tempted to eat him. By that
time, the bull had also seen the lion and had
sensed the impending danger to his life. He
thought of a clever plan to save his life.
When the lion came close to the bull, the clever bull
turned his neck towards his cave and called out
loudly, “Darling wife, do not cook anything for
dinner. I have just spotted a lion. As soon as he will
come near, I will rip him apart with my newly
sharpened horns.” The lion was scared on hearing
such words from the bull and took to his heels.
A jackal saw the lion running breathlessly. He asked
the lion, “O great lion, I fail to understand why a
mighty animal like you would run like that?”The lion
told him all that had happened in front of the bull’s
cave.“The bull has made a fool out of you,” said the
jackal. He further added, “Let us go there again and
then both of us will feast on his delicious meat.”

Whenever I Go Out To Walk
Whenever I go out to walk,
All the geese begin to gawk;
And when I start to wander back,
All the ducks begin to quack.
Just gazing at the moon,
And feeding little fishes
Sarsaparilla from a spoon.
Where Moses crossed and Pharaoh failed,
There’s where I always go.

4. It is important to learn from a young age to take care of yourself or help around the house.
To begin with, your parents must realize that you will move out of the house at some point
in your life. Be it for college or later in life to start a family of your own. In college especially,
if you have not had any experience with household tasks, you will find it exceptionally
difficult to adjust and take care of yourself. The act of sharing tasks at home also makes it
easier for you to share your space later in life – be it with a roommate or a partner.
Sharing responsibilities within the family also helps develop a sense of discipline. If you
understand at a young age, the importance of taking responsibility for tasks that have
been given to you, it can only be beneficial. Rather than shunning your duties, you will
learn to rework your days to ensure you can have fun and also complete the work you are
assigned.
You also understand the concept of being held accountable when you do not complete
your work. This will stem from a sense of understanding that you are a part of a larger
community which is the family. These habits will, in turn, be inculcated into your own fam-
ilies when you are older.
Ensure you are a part of the decision-making process while creating a chore chart. Your
chore can be something as small as putting away your own toys and tidying up your
room. It could also involve helping your parents set the table or clear it up after meal.

7. Indus Valley Civilization
stories from history
Let's go back to about 5000 years ago, when a group of nomads traveling
from Sumeria (present-day Iran) entered North Western India, near present
day Karachi. These nomads found a land so richly fertile by the banks of the
river Indus that they settled there without hesitation. This area was abun-
dant with water, fodder and fuel.
Over the next thousand years, they spread over an area of half a million
square miles. Excavations prove that the level of urban planning and architec-
ture prevalent here was incomparable. The anchor for this civilization lay in
the beautiful twin cities of Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa.
The name Mohenjo-Daro means ‘Mound of the Dead’ in Sindhi. The city was built
around 2600 BC and abandoned around 1700 BC. Evidence suggests that the
city was highly prone to floods.

8. Each house had a well from which it drew water. From a bathing room the
waste water was directed into covered drains along the main streets. Since all
the streets were well-drained, the city remained dry and clean. What an amaz-
ing and very modern method of sanitation and sewage.
These cities were made of bricks – either baked mud or wood bricks. The
baked bricks were a superior version of the sun-dried bricks used in other
civilizations. They ensured the durability of the buildings.

9. Houses were well protected from noise, odour and thieves. Each house opened
out onto inner courtyards and smaller lanes, so it was safe. Although some
houses were larger than the others, the city seemed to promote an equal so-
ciety, for all houses had the same kind of access to water and drainage.
The city had an impressive defense structure in place as well. Though it lacked
outer walls, there were defensive towers in the West and South. Since other
Indus cities had stronger defense systems in place, it is speculated that per-
haps Mohenjo-daro was only an administrative center.
Mohenjo-daro was primarily an agricultural city. It was situated below the
great mountain ranges, with rivers flowing abundantly through the land, de-
positing rich fertile soil. Agriculture was a very important occupation for the
people of Mohenjo-daro.

10. Shankar Abaji Bhise was an Indian inventor, innovator and scientist who was entirely
self-trained. He spent his childhood reading the Scientific American Magazines which were
his introduction to the field of mechanical engineering. His big break came in the late 1890s
when he won a trip to London.
It was during the early 1900s he produced his most innovative inventions – varying from
kitchen gadgets to an automatically flushing toilet. He did so with the backing of Dadabhai
Naoroji; who also had a long commercial career in England. Bhise’s most significant creation
involved the printing press.
He created a prototype for the ‘Bhisotype’ – which would have had changed the printing
industry. He was never able to bring together funds to market the Bhisotype. Despite falling
into obscurity, he must be remembered for his innovative spirit, all while also supporting
the freedom struggle in India.

Facts about Pigs
A pig’s snout is an important tool for finding
food in the ground and sensing the world
around them.
Like humans, pigs are omnivores, meaning
they eat both plants and other animals.
If you think that pigs are slow, you're wrong!
Adult pigs can run at speeds of up to 11 miles
per hour.
A pig's squeal can be as loud as 115 decibels –
that’s 3 decibels higher than the sound of a
supersonic airliner!
My sister and I had packed our school bags and were walking out of the
front door. The bus would be here any minute and we were rushing to
leave. We got a start when we opened the front door to find a cold and
shivering piglet sitting on our doorstep! We could see the school bus
approaching....
