Biometrics
1.
2.
Biometrics is the technique of studying the
physical characteristics of a person such as
fingerprints, hand geometry, eye structure or
voice pattern.
Ancient greek word ‘bios’=life,
‘metron’=measure. Biometrics is used for
uniquely recognizing humans based on
physical traits or behavior traits.
4.
Biometric techniques involve 'metrics' or
measurements of some kind, rather than
depending merely on informal or subliminal
methods
Performance of biometric systems is
measured in terms of False Accept Rate (FAR),
False Reject Rate (FRR).
The Test Center has also been carrying out
applied research using currently available
biometric technologies.
6.
Fingerprint recognition or
fingerprint authentication
refers to the automated
method of verifying a match
between two human
fingerprints. Fingerprints are
one of many forms of
biometrics used to identify
individuals and verify their
identity.
7.
Iris recognition is a method
of biometric authentication
that uses patternrecognition techniques
based on high-resolution
images of the irides of an
individual's eyes.
8.
Retina recognition
technology captures and
analyzes the patterns of
blood vessels on the thin
nerve on the back of the
eyeball that processes light
entering through the pupil.
9.
Speaker recognition is the
computing task of validating a
user's claimed identity using
characteristics extracted from
their voices. The term "voice
recognition" is sometimes
used to refer to recognition
systems that must be trained
to a particular speaker—as is
the case for most desktop
recognition software.
10.
Hand geometry is a
biometric that identifies
users by the shape of their
hands. Hand geometry
readers measure a user's
hand along many dimensions
and compare those
measurements to
measurements stored in a
file.
11.
signature recognition (also
called dynamic signature
recognition) authenticates
identity by measuring
handwritten signature. Unlike
electronic signature capture,
which treats the signature as a
graphic image, signature
recognition technology
measures how the signature is
signed.

Passports: From 26 October 2005 all newly
issued New Zealand and Australian passports
used a biometric identifier to continue to
meet visa waiver requirements for travel to or
through the USA.
Australian Customs Service - Smart Gate
System: First fully operational face recognition
system for border control in the world.
Processes aircrew at Sydney Airport, has now
been operating successfully for over a year.
