An exciting ride through a tunnel and over rail bridges takes you across the mountains from former cattle ranch to primary forest. After approximately 30 minutes, you’ll disembark at the Mirador look-out-point, where the closeness of the forest falls away to reveal a breathtaking panorama of towering Arenal Volcano, Lake Arenal with its dam and islands, the lush extinct volcano Cerro Chato and majestic San Gerardo Waterfall. They all seem close enough to touch being only 9 km (5.6 mi) away “as the crow flies.”
2. The Train
Trainforest’s two original reproduction trains were hand-
crafted by British company, Severn Lamb, which has
been making railway transport systems since 1947.
Brought to Monteverde in 2009, the trains are made of
steel and aluminum and feature real copper and brass
bells, details and trim. The engines are diesel-hydraulic
and each pulls 3 comfortable carriages for 50 passengers
with facing wooden benches. You’ll have clear views of
the landscape with open sides, which can be enclosed
with transparent heavy plastic curtains in case of rain.
