Geography
The total surface of the Mexican territory
is 1,964,375 km2, which makes it the third
largest country in Latin America and the
fourteenth largest in the world. Almost all
of this surface is found on the North
American plate, together with the US and
Canada, except for the Mexican insular
surface (5,127 km2).
Economy
Mexico is among the 15
largest economies in the
world and is the second
largest economy in Latin
America. Mexico's economy
is diversified, including
high-tech industries, oil
production, mineral
exploitation, and
manufacturing.
Gastronomy
Mexican cuisine is known for its
succulence and its great variety.
Its origins date back to the pre-
Hispanic period, when a large
number of dishes revolved
around corn, along with other
ingredients such as: chili
peppers, beans, pumpkins,
avocado, tomato, cocoa, nopal,
rabbit meat, armadillo and
turkey, as well as insects, frogs,
turtles and a wide variety of
fruits such as plums and pitayas.
Culture
Mexican culture, in particular
the current one, is a combination
of various cultures, from the
Spanish that arrived with the
Conquest, the various cultures of
pre-Hispanic Mexico and even
some elements of African
cultures that arrived in certain
regions by being brought as
slaves.
Language
The most widely spoken language in
Mexican territory is Spanish,
although the General Law of
Linguistic Rights also recognizes
native indigenous languages as
national languages.
The national government officially
recognizes 63 aboriginal languages,
including Nahuatl, Yucatec Maya,
Zapotec, Mixtec, Otomi, Totonac,
Mazahua, and Huastec. Around 7%
of the population speaks at least one
indigenous language.
