Driverless cars use sensors, navigation systems, and motion planning to operate without human assistance. The technologies allow vehicles to sense their environment, plot routes, and safely navigate traffic situations. In 2007, the DARPA Urban Challenge demonstrated this capability by having driverless vehicles complete a 96km urban course obeying all traffic laws while merging and sharing the road with other vehicles. The competition aimed to advance autonomous technologies to save lives on the battlefield and minimize accidents. The winning Tartan Racing team completed the complex course in under 6 hours.
