„MOVE TO IMPROVE YOUR BODY AND MIND” 2012 – 2014
LOCAL GAMES
at Maria Konopnicka’s Primary School No.5 in Ełk, Poland
2. 2
The history of the game:
Kwadrant comes from a game called ‘Palant’. It is a team game with
scores. To play it you need a tennis ball and a bat. The game is known in
Poland and in Europe from Medieval as a school and a folk game.
Nowadays there are a lot of local types of this game. We would like to
introduce the version valid in Primary School No.5 in Ełk.
The purpose of the game is to:
- develop the pace of moving
- improve the technique of throwing a tennis ball
- improve the ability of catching a tennis ball
- learn working in groups
- learn a fair-play game
3. 3
Tools:
- a tennis ball
- T-shirts for teams
(each team has different colour)
- four cones or four flags
The rules of the game:
To play a game you need two teams with the same number of people
(four players at least). There is no limit of time. The pitch is divided
into two parts:
1. the area of throwing out the tennis ball (called ‘home base’)- the
offensive team plays here
2. the area of catching the tennis ball- the defensive team plays here
4. 4
The position:
The defensive team must
‘cover’ their whole area
between the flags while the
offensive team must divert
into the ‘home base’. They also
ought to comply the order of
throwing, which was
established earlier. The tennis
ball lies next to the flag.
The offensive team:
Their task is to throw the
tennis ball in a way to get
much time to run around
outside of the cones/flags. If
the player throws the ball he
will run to the first flag. It
the throw was long and the
defensive team wouldn’t throw
back the tennis ball into the
‘home base’, he/she can run
ahead. If the player runs around all the flags the offensive team will get
one point.
The defensive team:
Their task is to throw back the
tennis ball to the ‘home base’.
If the offensive team catches
the ball they will get one point.
Then both team change their
places. When the defensive
5. 5
team throws back the ball out of the home base’s line , the player from
the offensive team must stay next to the flag. The player becomes
disqualified if he will run among the flags.
The game:
One team is in the ‘home
base’, the other team in the
field. The first player from
the ‘home base’ throws the
ball into the field. After the
correct throw he runs to the
first cone. If there’s much
time he will try to run
around the whole field. Then
he goes back to the ‘home
base’. (He runs until someone from the field throws back the tennis ball
behind the line of the ‘home base’). The person who will run around all
the cones gets one point.
6. 6
The defensive team
tries to catch the ball.
If they throw it back
into the ‘home base’
and the ball passes the
line while player will be
between the flags, he
becomes ‘handcuffed’.
Then he must go back
to the place near the
‘home base’ from the
right side. If the next player throws the ball wrong he will be also
‘handcuffed’. The other players being among the flags go back to the
last cone and wait for the throw of the next person from team.
The teams’ change is when
the defensive team messes
the throw (the ball
doesn’t pass the
appointed line), the
players are ‘handcuffed’
three times or the
offensive team caught the
tennis ball. The winner is
who gets more points.
