How to Make Your Pickiest Eaters
Happy

(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers
http://marysegers.com
I’ve visited homes where mealtimes were an absolute
headache… for the parents, the kids, and definitely, for
me.

The kids don’t want to eat anything but chicken
nuggets, mashed potatoes, and macaroni and cheese.
As a result there was a lot of him screaming what he
wants and the parent screaming that he wasn’t going to
get it.
(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers
http://marysegers.com
This is especially problematic for any home time management plan.

I can’t think of a single person who, trying to pencil in everything in a
day, makes sure to pencil in “Spend an hour fighting with Jr. over his
dinner.”
Nevertheless, this time-wasting routine happens in some homes…
night after night after night.
The parents are almost used to the mealtime struggle but something
in them resists just giving up and settling for this being normal.

(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers
http://marysegers.com
If you’re reading this then maybe this occurs in
your own home.
And you may be wondering how to stop it.

(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers
http://marysegers.com
There are actually several things you can do
in order to make mealtimes less... shall we be
nice and say… hectic.
Remember… there is no one size fits all but if
you do these consistently they will make a
huge difference in the long run.

(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers

Have the Child Help Prepare the
Menus
When we've helped create something we
naturally have more of a stake in it.
This is true of kids, too.

If you were to sit down with them and create the
menus you may be surprised by what you can
get them to do.
(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers
http://marysegers.com
Let them know… in advance… that there will be
some veggies included this week and they are
going to be able to pick out some.
If you do this consistently, they will… very
quickly… get to where they will pick out some
voluntarily.

(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers
http://marysegers.com
For example, if they don’t like vegetables sit down together and
make a list of all the veggies that you can think of to choose from.
When they choose one make sure to fix it like they like it to start
with.
If they like corn with salt, pepper, and butter then fix it that way for a
while until they get used to the idea of eating it.
As they get more and more used to it they even begin to like it and
then you can fix it differently.
This exact method helped my grandson learn to love broccoli… a
feat my daughter thought was absolutely impossible.

(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers
http://marysegers.com
Have the Child Help Prepare the
Meals

Again, when the child’s had a stake in something they are more apt to
feel positively toward it.
Following along with that logic, if they’ve helped prepare a meal they’ll
feel more positively toward it.
Have them help in any stage and in any way… even something as
simple as sprinkling cheese on top as a garnish will do wonders in the
long run.

(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers
http://marysegers.com
Do Not Give Alternates… EVER
A big downfall of many plans is that darn backup
plan… the hot dog, PB&J, or bowl of cereal.
Don’t sabotage your efforts like that.
Your child will only think of it as “Planning” and
“Helping” if you don’t follow through with the third
step which is then actually eating the fruits of their
labor.
(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers
http://marysegers.com
Don’t forget, you’re aiming to create a natural
cycle of (1) Plan, (2) Prepare, and then (3) Eat.

If all 3 are seen as one process and they like
the “Planning” and “Preparing” parts then they’ll
learn to see the “Eat” part in a more favorable
light.
