– Holds a collection of

controlled from on a
ship)
– Advantage: allows water
collecting at many
different depths

Thermometer
-measures how much heat is in the sample

5. Density
Hydrometer
-floats in sample
-measures density,
which can be converted
to salinity at a
particular temperature

6. Salinity
Refractometer
– Measures how much light
bends
– Look through one end,
place water sample on
other end to measure
salinity

7. Other Parameters
CTD
– Conductivity,
temperature,
depth
– Measures
electrical
current running
through water
– Converts that
charge to a
measure of
salinity

– Measures cloudiness (turbidity) of the water
