The Moderates.(AD 1885-1905)
• The congress was led and controlled by the moderate
nationalist during the from 1885 to 1905.
• Dadabhai Naroji,Surendranath Benerji ,Pherozeshah
Mehta,Gopal Gokhale and more were the famous Moderates.
• They were famous for their simple demands and they used
constitutional and peaceful methods to realise them.
Demands of the Moderates.
• The desire of the government was that, the
government should introduce a member of reforms.
• They wanted large share in government and
expansion and reforms in the Legislative Council.
• They demande the Ams Act to be repealed, executive
should be seperated from the judiciary and Indians
should be appointed at Higher Posts.
• Abolition of Tax,development of Modern Industries
and more were their main demands.
• Education, irrigation, medicsl snd Health fscilities were
their other demands from the government.
• They wanted Swaraj within the British Rule.
Methods Of the Moderates.
 They had a great faith in peaceful and constitutional agitation.
 They used press and annual sessions for their
propaganda.
 They organised meetings, speeches,
resolutions and positions for the Public
Opinion and Placed their Demands.
Contribution of the Moderates.
The policy and programme of the moderates were
critisised by some people.
Their efforts towards the progress of the National
movement can’t be ignored.Their contribution in
organising public opinion and replacing the demands of
the people before the government, cannot be ignored.
National consciouseness was created by them for the
Indians and they tried to unite the people.
Useful work like National awaking, political education and
unification of Indians was done for them.
ADMINISTRATIVE CAUSES
ALIEN RULE
BRITISH JUDICIAL RULE
INDIANS WERE EXCLUDED FROM HIGH POSTS
LACK OF REPRESENTATION IN LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL
ALIEN RULE
• India was ruled by administrators thousands ofmiles away in
London.
• They were ignorant about the beliefs and customs of India.
• As a result they could neither establish proximity with the
Indian masses nor could they win their hearts
BRITISH JUDICIAL SYSTEM
• The new judicial system introduced by the British was
improper and partial.
• Rich and resourceful people were able to manipulate
judgements in their favour.
• It led to dissatisfaction among the common man.
INDIANS WERE EXCLUDED FROM HIGH POSTS
• Indians were not given high posts in civil services and
military.
• The highest rank in military was that of a Subedar while in
Civil Services, they got promoted only to the post of ‘Srdar
Amin’.
• This turned the Indians against the British.
