Ihram, but a woman should not let her veil/scarf touch
her face.

5. More on Preparation for Ihram
It is Sunnah to perform a ritual/legal bath, and if not
possible , perform Wudu, then perform 2 rak'a salat.
Brother will have put on their Ihram towels, but for
this two rak'a they will cover their head.
Right after this Salat, brother have to uncover their
head, before making intention and saying Talbiyah

flies for no reason)
11. ENTERING THE HOLY CITY OF AL MAKKAH
AL MUKARAMMAH-THE HARARM
We should enter haram, with utmost respect and
humility, reciting talbiyah, and also other du’as like the
following:

Then , we should recite Durood Sharif.
What is important is the state of our heart and mind, and
if somebody does not read these dua, talbiya, durood
shareef or any other dua from Quran and Sunnah would
suffice.
12. Entering Masjid Al Haram-and seeing Holy Ka’ba
Talbiyah
ك
On seeing the Holy Ka’ba, say “Tahlil” three times,
and “Takbir” three times, then read one or all of the
following:

It is recommended to make du’a while standing,
upon seeing the Blessed Ka’ba.
14. Dua to say at the beginning and end of every
circuit
15. Method of Tawaf
The beginning mark of Tawaf is the Black Stone. Once you come in
Mataf, you will see a green light parallel to the Black Stone, keep
this green light on your back, face Hajr Aswad, and raise the hands
to the earlobes and say “Bismillahi, Allahu Akbar” , then drop your
hands to the side, this act is just like تكبير
تحريمه , opening takbir of
Salat.
Then raise your hand up with palms facing the Black Stone, (as if
they are placed on the Black Stone) and recite “ Bismillahi Allahu
Akbar” and kiss your hands. This has to be done at the beginning of
each circuit and the end of the circuit. This is called “Ishtilam”
There will be Eight Isltilam or pointing for every tawaf.
Every time, you will finish a circuit, come in line with Hajr Aswad,
face it, keep green light on your back, point towards Hajr Aswad,
say الحمد هلل و أكبر هللا هللا بسم and kiss your hands.(Because you do no get a
chance to physically kiss, so we raise our hands, like both hands are
placed on Hajr Aswad, then kiss our own hands.
16. Sunnah acts of Tawaf
Istilaam of Hajr Aswad, every time a circuit starts and
ends (both brothers and sisters)
Ramal, in first three circuits of Tawaf, is sunnah for the
men, which means to jog, to walk with short steps,
moving/jerking shoulders, projecting chest, like a
wrestler (brothers)
Id’tiba, is sunnah of Tawaf for all seven circuits, which
means, to expose one’s right should during Tawaf. This
right shoulder will be covered after Tawaf, and remains
covered during two Rak’ah of Tawaf, and during Saiy’,
and also while going from Hotel to Haram and coming
back from Haram to Hotel and/or barber shop.
(brothers)
17. Regarding Du’as during Tawaf
1. There is no specific dua necessary for Tawaf, if you do not
remember any dua, continue to recite:
أكبر هللا و هللا إل إله ل و الحمدهلل و هللا سبحان
الع العلي باهلل إل قوة ل و حول ل و ،
ظيم
2. or Durood Sharif
د
2. Or any dua from Quran and Sunnah
3. Or dua listed in the books
4. One can also recite Quran in the Tawaf, though it is better to
supplicate
5. If one remains silent, that is okay for the validity of Tawaf.
18. Dua to read between Rukne Yamani and Rukne
Aswad
19. After 2 Rak’ah of Tawaf- Al Multazam and Zam
Zam
Before going for Sa’ee one should go the Multazam, then drink Zam
Zam water.
Then, come back to Hajr Aswad, make another Istilam or, signal or
point , towards it, kiss your hands, and then proceed to Safa for
Sa’iy.
Another method is, to drink Zam Zam first, then come to Multazam,
and make Istilam of Hajr Aswad
Due to construction going on in Mataf, and crowded gatherings, it
may or, may not be possible, to come back., as it will be going
against the flow. What seems practical , is to make Ninth Istilam,
after Two Rak'a of Tawaf, only if possible, then drink Zam Zam and
proceed to Safa. You can come to make dua at Multazam, later on,
at any other time, during the stay in Al Makkah.
When in the state of Ihram, it is better not to cling to Multazam and
kiss Hajr Aswad, or touching Rukne Yamani, as plenty of perfume ,
is applied to these places.
20. Sa’iy-Reach “Safa” Face Ka’ba, make du’a,
proceed toward Marwa
Walk toward Mount Safa. Just as there are signposts in the Masjid Al Haram,
guiding towards Mataf, and the way to the Tawaf, similarly, there are signposts, in
Mataf, leading towards, Sa’iy- towards SAFA, or Mas’a or saying Towards Sai’y.
One cannot miss it.
And, when one is close to reaching there, he/she will see additional signposts,
marking SAFA START
Once on Safa, face Ka’ba, make dua, intend to perform Sa’iy , begin by reciting
“Bismillahi Allahu Akbar.’’
This time hands will only be raised like making du’a, up to the chest, and not to the
earlobes, unlike what we do in Takbir Tahrima.
Now, after dua, turn towards Marwa, descend, start walking, this will be your first
lap/walk and it will end on Marwa, and the entire Sai’y will also end on Marwa.
Remember, there are two sides, of travel/walk, and you will always be on right side,
whether you are walking towards Safa or Marwa.
Between the area ,marked with green lights, brothers have to walk briskly, short of
running. Sisters at normal pace.
Sa’iy has to start from Safa and end at Marwa, as this is a condition of the validity.
21. Sa’iy – Partial verse of Al Baqarah, then opening
du’as before starting Sai’y
22. On Mount Marwa
Do as you did at Safa by turning to Ka'ba and make
dua
Repeat this for all seven walks/runs
From Safa to Marwa is one, and from Marwa to Safa
is two, and so on. Hence, you will finish your seventh
lap/walk on Marwa.
Sa’ee has to be start from Safa. If someone started
from Marwa, that will not count.
Conclusion: Always remember the Sai’y is only for
Tawaf Umrah( or Hajj) and not for Nafl Tawaf.
23. End of Umrah-Release from Ihram through Halq
or Qasr
Once, Tawaf e Umrah and Sa’iy have been
performed, the brothers and sisters have completed
the acts/rituals of Umrah, but just as they needed
Ihram to perform Umrah, they need now Halq or
Qasr to release from Ihram.
Remember, even if you have performed Tawaf and
Sa’iy , you are still Muhrim(in a state of Ihram) and
will only be released through Halq and Qasr
For brothers, halq is preferable and carries more
reward, and for sisters only Qasr is allowed, they are
forbidden to do halq(shaving).
24. Men Women
Shaving all over the
head, is preferable and
more rewarding
Need to cut one inch or
one joint of a finger from
all over the head.
Can shave/trim their
own hairs or by a person
who has done all rituals
of Umrah(Tawaf and
Sa’ee
No Halq/Shaving
allowed to women
Only Shortening of the
hair
Need to cut only 1 inch or
1 joint of a finger at the
end of the hairs.
Can cut their own hairs,
or by a sister who has
done all rituals of Umrah
Halq and Qasr-A Comparison
25. Worship in Makkah
The best worship which is unique to Masjid al Haram, is
of course, Tawaf,
Make as many Tawaf as possible, try to do at least one
Tawaf with every prayer there.
Take advantage of nighttime, when it relatively cooler
Try to do more Umrah, once you have finished the first
one, you will be treated like the people of Makkah, and
can go to the any Miqat of People of Makkah (where
limits of Haram end, any one of the six points in all four
directions) The shortest distance where limits of Haram
ends is at Tan’eem, Masjid Ayesha. Go there to observe
Ihram and come back to Haram to perform Umrah.
Editor's Notes
Extracted from presentation by Mufti Faraz Adam of Darulfiqh
SAYING THREE TIMES IS SUNNAH, AFTER THIS RECITE DUROOD SHARIF, AND MAKE WHATEVER DUA, IT IS RECOMMENDED TO ASK FOR ALLAH’S PLEASURE AND JANNAH , AND SEEK REFUGE FROM HIS ANGER AND HELL-FIRE.
Remember, these istilaam are sunnah of the Tawaf, so if you fear hurting others, do not attempt, always move to your rights, because most of the people are flowing to the right, and after Tawaf, Maqam Ibrahim is to the right, walkway to Safa/Mas’aa is to the right, Zam Zam coolers are on your way to Mas’aa.
