Introduction to Parliament
Parliament is the supreme legislative body of the
country
The word Parliament is derived from the Latin
word “Parliamentum”.
Parliament comprises of president and 2 houses
(1) Lok sabha
(2) Rajya sabha
Constitution of India came into force on 26th
January 1950
Lok sabha
Lok sabha
 Lok Sabha is the body of representatives of the
people.
 Its members are elected every five years by the
adult population of the country who are eligible to
vote.
 The minimum age for becoming member of the
Lok sabha is 25 years.
 The present membership of Lok sabha is 545 and
the number is divided among different states.
 One of the members from the Lok Sabha is elected
as the Speaker of the House
Speaker of Lok Sabha
The Speaker is the
Presiding Officer of the
Lok Sabha in the Parliament
House.
a member belonging to
the ruling party is elected
The Honourable speaker
the Speaker.

Power of Speaker
Speaker presides the sessions of Lok Sabha.
He/She decides whether bill is a money bill or
a non money bill.
He/She permits the moving of various kinds of
motions and resolutions in parliament
Speaker decides on the agenda to be taken up
for discussion during the whole meeting.
Rajya sabha
Rajya sabha
 Rajya Sabha is the Upper House of Parliament.
 Maximum members of Rajya sabha are 250.
 Members of Rajya Sabha are elected by the
Legislative Assemblies of the various States
 Twelve of Rajya Sabha members are nominated
by the President who have earned distinction in
the fields of literature, art, science and social
service.
 For becoming a member of the Rajya Sabha,
The members have to be at least 30 years of
age.
