Fossil fuels

 1. 1. FOSSIL FUELS By Nasha Dovlatyan
 2. 2. What Are Fossil Fuels?

They are non-renewable sources of energy. They are formed from animals or plants that lived over 300 million years ago!

Fossil fuels are found under the earth’s core.

 3. 3. Types of Fossil Fuels;

They are : Coal, Oil, & natural gases.

 4. 4. How are they formed?

Most was formed 300,000,000 years ago. Then the earth was covered by steamy swamps.

They come form the accumulation of dead-land based plants, mostly trees however.

 5. 5. Stages;

Process is called coalification.

It forms from plan remains which have previously died.

Sub-bituminous

Bituminous

anthracite

 6. 6. Oil formation;

They form from remains of animals and plants, between 10-160 million years, that lived in the ocean.

Because of lack of oxygen, the organisms start to slowly decay into carbon-rich compounds.

 7. 7. Natural gas formation;

Natural gases are mixtures of hyrdocarbons and gases that occur beneathe the earth.

Made from decays of living matter from millions of years

Heat and pressure

 8. 8. Natural gases=fossil fuels

Found in the ground

non-renewable & burning them causes air pollution

When burning, air energy is produced

Used for, heart & cooking

 9. 9. Refineries

Industrial process plant is when you take crude oil and you process it and refine it for more useful profucts

Such as: gas, deisal fuel, heating oil.

Burn oil to create energy.

 10. 10. The Exxon Valdez oil spill;

On March 24 th 1989, in Prince William Sound, Alaska.

What happened was the Exxon Valdez oil spill hit the Bligh Reef and spilled over 10 million gallons of oil into the ocean.

 11. 11. Deep Water Horizon

The Deepwater Horizon was an ultra-deepwater offshore drilling rig.

On April 20th, 2010 there was an explosion on the rig.

The oil covered 1,300 miles of coastline.

The first cleanup response was through the use of a dispersant, a surfactant and solvent mixture
