2. Demographics
• 8 Miles north of downtown Chicago
• 714 Seniors, total enrollment 2,676
• 90 plus different spoken language in the school
• Over 60% speak another language than English
at home
• 33% on Free/Reduced lunch program
• 59% attend a four year college; 35% attend a
two year college
3. Counseling Staff
• 10 Full time generalist counselors
• 1 assistant who works with the counselors
• 2 current interns
4. The College and Career Resource
Center
• 1 College and Career Counselor
• 1 assistant who works with the
college and career counselor
• Students can use the room any free
period
• Swipe system for attendance
5. History of Naviance
• 2006: Purchased Naviance during summer
• Rolled it out slowly. Entered college decisions
so students can access scattergrams.
• 2008: College Visits on-line with
representatives contact information.
• 2010: Increase Awareness with Juniors.
• 2011: More programs for Sophomores.
• 2012: Introduce Freshman to Naviance.
• Registration code is the same as how they log
on to the school computers. Utilize
school email address.
6. Freshman Year
• Introduce Naviance Day 2 of the
school year.
• Go into Freshman study hall, and
have students complete
Freshman Guidance survey
• Show them scattergram
• Take Learning Style Inventory
• Begin building Resume
• Guidance Counselor utilize the
Freshman Guidance survey during
their initial meeting when creating a
four year plan
7. Freshman Continue
• April, Freshman Day in the College and Career
Resource Center
• Interns have students log on and continue to update
resume
• Complete the Career Interest Profile
• Add colleges to the prospective college list
8. Sophomore Year
• Sophomore English
• English project. Students research a career using
Do What You Are
• College search based upon career/major interest
• Students utilize Naviance to collect data
• April: Interns have Sophomore Day in the
College and Career Resource center
• Have students complete Do What You Are
• Introduce Test Prep program
9. Junior Year
• October, Junior U.S. History Class
• Meet with students to discuss college plans, and talk
about Naviance
• Counselors reinforce Naviance
• Show on the Road (December – Goal)
• Go to study hall and have students begin Test
Preparation
10. Junior Continue
• Individual Sessions
• Add colleges to list
• Look at scattergrams
• View college visit schedule
• Scholarship list
• Junior guidance survey
11. Senior Year
• August: Senior Credit Check
• Extended time to make sure students are on track
for graduation
• Remind the students the importance of Naviance
• Letter of recommendations, students must complete
questionnaire on Naviance
• English Class
• Talk with students individually to where they will
apply for college
• Have students put schools on their
college list to keep track of deadlines

college visits via Naviance
• Transcript Request
• Currently we use Parchment
by Docufide. Students can
request transcripts by
logging on to Naviance

• List all scholarship and applications on Naviance

• Send final transcripts
14. Transfer Students
• Approximately 1 in 4 students are transfer
students to Niles West
• 6 week group by year in class run by a
counselor, social worker, psychologist, or intern.
• Introduce Naviance
• Complete transfer student evaluation via
Naviance
15. Parents
• Evening Programs
• Highlight Naviance as a tool for college/career
search
• Collect email address and give them an account
• Coffee With the Counselors
• Spend a few minutes talking about Naviance and
register parents
16. Parents Continued
• Parent Teacher Conferences
• Counselors walk parents individually through the
program and register them
• Parent Brag Sheet
• Parents can brag about their student and the
counselors will use some of the highlights in their
letters of recommendations
17. Special Programs
• Pop Corn Friday
• Students receive a bag of popcorn, and a chance to
enter raffle if they complete Game Plan
• Freeze Pop Friday
• Students receive a Freeze Pop, and a chance to
enter raffle if they complete scavenger hunt
Naviance Kiosk
• Counselor helps students do a quick query to find
colleges that match.
