Comparison-Contrast Writing
1.Comparison–contrast writing holds two or more things, phenomena, or concepts side by side– with
comparison focusing on similarities, and contrast focusing on differences. By looking at subjects
side–by–side, we more clearly see their unique and shared traits.
2.Writers commonly compare and contrast subjects in order to explain how, why, and to what effect
their distinguishing features make the subjects similar or different. The writer believes that his or
her comparative analysis of the topic will enrich readers' understanding of that topic. Writers address
a wide range of topics through comparison–contrast: people, events, phenomena, technologies,
problems, products, stories, and so on.
3.Comparable items are types of same thing. The subjects are of the same order – one cannot simply
be an example of the other. Once writers choose the criteria, those criteria must be applied
consistently. For help comparing and contrasting subjects, use a Venn Diagram. List the subjects'
differences on the left or right and their similarities in the center.
4.Whole vs. whole discusses items separately, giving a strong overview of each. This pattern works

Write the writer first draft. When writing in the subject–by–subject pattern it should include the
following: an opening that gets the readers' attention, introduces the subjects, offers a thesis; a body
that discusses the first subject, then analyze the second subject, discuss traits parallel to those the
reader addressed with the first subject; a conclusion that summarizes similarities, differences, and
implications. When writing in the trait–by–trait pattern it should include the following: an opening
that gets the readers' attention, introduce the subjects, and offer a thesis; a body that compare and/or
contrast the two subjects trait by trait; include transitions that help readers look back and forth
between the two subjects; a conclusion that summarize the key relationships and note their

The Compare/ Contrast Essay
First, let's explain compare and contrast:
When we compare, we show our readers a subject's similarities.
When we contrast, we show our readers a subject's differences.
Compare and Contrast essays are learning–process essays. You learn about your subject as you
gather and organize information.
This type of essay takes a bit of organization, and it's this organizational process, this gathering of
facts, that helps you learn as you go.
You will create lists of qualities or traits that each of your subjects has, and as you do this, you will
discover insights to your subject that, at first glance, you may not have realized were there.
It's like buying a new shirt. The moment you spread it out on...show more content...
And you will either compare or contrast, not both. Be careful, sometimes going point by point can
make your writing sound tedious and repetitive. Watch your language and transition words. Use
several points at a time.
Ending: As in the argumentative essay, bring it all together. Allow your ending to go back to your
thesis. Use the transitional words on the next page to help your paper's coherence. Transitions and
other connecting words and connecting sentences should be used throughout.
Remember: There are no hard and fast rules as to how many comparisons or contrasts you should
offer. For a thorough look into your subject, you must offer enough comparisons or contrasts or both
to make a valid statement.
Transitional Words (Conjunctival Adverbs)
Use these words to help you connect your thoughts, your sentences, and your paragraphs:

High School vs. College Essay examples
High School vs. College A very important part of life is education. In order to acquire a satisfying
education, one should complete high school prior to college. College and high school have two
different levels of education, but both are trying to further student's knowledge. As recent high
school graduates and college freshman's many can clarify similarities and differences between the
two. Some obvious similarities are that both have assignments, classrooms, and students. Although
college and high school have many differences three of the main ones are the teachers, classes, and
responsibilities. Teachers and college professors are one main difference. Teachers in high school
often write notes on an overhead and tell you the...show more content...
Classes are the second main reason high school differs from college. Classes in high school
generally consist of no more that 25 students. Counselors usually arrange your schedule the way
they think is best for you. You are not responsible for knowing what it takes to graduate. Usually
the school year is 26 weeks long; classes may have to be taken the whole year in order to get credit
for them. You are graded on most assignments done in class. In college some classes may have from
75–100 students. It is your responsibility to enroll in the classes that are required for your major,
plus a week for final exams. The year is divided into two 14 week semesters; most classes need to
be taken the complete semester in order to get credit. College professors tend to grade students
on tests and major papers. Responsibility has a lot to do when it comes to high school and college.
When you attend high school you are provided textbooks for each class. Your time is usually
structured by others (parents and/or teachers). Many parents are there to wake you up in the
morning before school starts. In high school you are required to go to school everyday. You often
read or hear presentations once in order to learn what you need to know. Students are expected to
read short stories at home which will be re–taught in class. When in college you must pay for each
textbook necessary for class.

Chapter 16, Comparison and Contrast, explains the purpose and functions of comparison and/or
contrast essays as well as how to use them in students' essays. Comparison and contrast means
finding similarities, differences, or both. Comparison and contrast essays commonly have three
purposes. First, they are important in expressing ideas. For example, I want to talk about my ideas
about hip–hop and rap music so I compare and contrast them. The second purpose is to inform
people. I may want to tell the audience that there are many similarities in two different religions.
Third, I can persuade people through comparing and contrasting two things. For instance, I will
argue that reading e–books is better than printed books by comparing and contrasting

Compare and Contrast Two Short Stories
Compare and Contrast Two Short Stories––
Landlady by Roald Dahl and Chemistry by Graham Swift
There are lots of great short stories out there, but in my opinion, both 'Chemistry' by Graham Swift
and 'The Landlady' by Roald Dahl are two of the most unique and effective stories. They share both
similarities and differences throughout. Comparing and contrasting the way the authors use their
inimitable writing style to achieve their intentions in the story will give us more idea how these
stories are alike and distinct.
In a way, these two stories are similar because both the authors had carefully chosen the words

In the beginning , Billy thought the landlady was 'terribly nice',which he was quite grateful to have
such a nice landlady who give him a well–appointed service, but as the conversations go on, Billy
was then frightened by her weird and creepy contents, he 'sat there staring straight ahead of him into
the far corner of the room, biting his lower lip.' tells the readers that he's begin to frightened and
suspect landlady, foreshadowing the readers that she might be doing something that couldn't be
trusted by Billy.
In another way, these two stories are different because the authors have been using different
perspective when narrating the story. In 'Chemistry', author's written the story in the word of narrator,
mixing both the perspective of adult and young boy's. Line" My father's death was a far less
remote event than my grandfather's but no more explicable, I was only seven." can be a good
example. Almost the whole story was written in past tense, added to the effect of recalling. He's
shown a grown up man recalling memories when he was back in 7–10 years old. This kind of
writing style makes readers felt more personal, because the subject is 'I', when reading out the
story, readers will feel like they're experiencing the narrators' life, as if they are the narrator. Also,
another interesting fact about this kind of writing style is that if I were to look at the same events in
other character's perspective, it might be another whole different story because

There are two types of learning systems most commonly used in the world, Online learning and
Traditional classroom teaching. Online learning is basically a system which involves electronic
media and information. In simple it is getting training and communication research through
electronic media. It would not be wrong to call online learning, the 'future of education'. Online
learning does have some weak points, but the solutions that have been provided are more than
enough to cover up the cons. Online learning system is not perfect, it has some deficiencies, but
it's definitely the system of the future. Many people still prefer traditional universities as the best
way to get knowledge and a degree but online education is also a good proven alternative. Through
online education students can study in the environment they find comfortable and the time they are
free. All of this is for free as most online course which universities offer don't have any fee or if
some courses have then that is very less as compared to the price of normal course at a university.
This is the reason which gives online education an edge over traditional classroom learning. By using

books and desks may not be the optimum learning environment for every student. In a New York
Times article, experts declared that the real promise of online education is "providing learning
experiences that are more tailored to individual students than is possible in classrooms," which in
turn fosters the concept of "learning by doing." Many students find this engagement more useful and

Introduction
Education is widely accepted to be an essential part of people's lives. It is generally agreed that
education helps people to develop their own personalities, by acquiring new knowledge, using
different sources. An American philosopher John Dewey (n.d) claimed: "Education is a social
process. Education...show more content...
Students in the USA are dissimilar to students of the UK that they start high school right away after
middle school, when they reach 14 years. American high school consists of 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th
grades, which are also known as freshman, sophomore, junior and senior. In the USA there are also
Honours, Advanced Placement, and International Baccalaureate classes that are more rigid and the
load of homework is much greater (USA Study Guide, 2007). The transition from middle to high
school is challenging indeed because the type of education that is used in each institution is very
different. At high school students not only acquire knowledge, but also get some experience, which
is very useful for them in future.
Secondly, the UK and the USA have totally different examinations for the students. GCSE and
A–level are the main exams in the UK, whereas the USA has its own method of assessment, which
is called GPA. GCSE is the General Certificate of Secondary Education. It is a two–year study
course for 15–16 years students. Usually British students pass GSCE exam when they reach the age
of 16. GCSE is essential for students who want to take further examinations, such as AS/A–levels
and enter the university or a college of higher education (Kozma, 2010).
Besides, GCSE gives you a chance to assess your knowledge and skills and help you to define your
weak points and how you can

Compare and Contrast Two Leaders
INTRODUCTION
This essay will compare and contrast the characteristics of two of America's female leaders. In
analysing the effectiveness of their leadership, this essay will evaluate the traits, personality,
history, experience, and values of each leader. The ability to bring people together around shared
beliefs and a common organisational purpose to create a sense of belonging is a prerequisite for an
effective leader and will formulate the basis of defining an effective leader for the purpose of this
paper.

Leadership is a process as demonstrated by the accomplishments of Oprah as she has used her

Thesis Statement
The stories "The Lottery" and "Young Goodman Brown" both appear to show that human behavior
and judgment can be flawed, even if the person's intentions appear good to them. There is a level of
fear and underlying evil in Puritan settings in both stories.
I. Introduction/Statement of Thesis

The theme of the story "The Lottery" is blind acceptance of something just because it is considered
tradition. In Jackson's "The Lottery", symbols are utilized to help show the theme. The name of the
story, "The Lottery", itself is a symbol. The term lottery can be viewed, by most, as a good thing, a
hope in winning, but winning the lottery takes on a very different, very dark meaning in
Jackson's story. Also, the names of the characters are symbols as well. For example, Graves is a
name that would portray death and Summers is a bright and cheerful name. Also, the name Old
Man Warner would show tradition. Next, is the use of the black box and the black dot on the
paper. The color black is showing darkness, evil, and death. The tradition of the black box is a
symbol, in the fact that it is worn and faded, but still used by the villagers. Shirley Jackson
conveys the theme very clearly through the use of symbols. In the end, the villagers are shown to
be evil and murderous just because of tradition. The villagers do not seem to have a problem with
murdering others within the lottery because it is what they have always done and no one is going to
declare that what they are doing is wrong. This shows the reader that following blindly can have
dangerous consequences. The theme of "Young BrownGoodman" is that the main character is
basing his beliefs and faith on what others in his life believe or have faith in. The theme of "Young

Compare And Contrast Anxiety And Depression
There are many similarities between mental disorders like anxiety and depression. Often times, many
symptoms of one disorder stem off of having the other. For example, symptoms of anxiety can be
brought on by depressive thoughts, such as thoughts about suicide, and visa versa. The differences,
however, are far more prominent than the ways they are the same. Anxiety is a disorder characterized
by fear, doubt, and a sense of vulnerability. People with anxiety tend to have less noticeable
symptoms than people with depression, as symptoms of anxiety are things such as physical
sensations of strong emotions of fear. Depression symptoms are more physical and noticeable from
the outside, such as lack of eating or sleep, or lack of interest in doing things. People with
depression may become...show more content...
Anxiety can also run in families, or be caused by outside conditions such as excessive stress,
drastic changes in living conditions, or abuse. Depression on the other hand, is caused by
changes in brain chemistry. However, like anxiety, depression can be caused by genetics and
medical conditions that create an imbalance of the brain's chemicals. Depressive episodes often
last for days, leaving a person mopey and sluggish, or, on the other side of the spectrum,
frighteningly up, or manic. This is when a person seems to have boundless energy and doesn't
sleep for days. Episodes of anxiety last much shorter periods of time, flaring up and disappearing
within the same day. Symptoms of an episode can include increased heart rate, sweating, and
trembling. These can be combatted with controlled breathing, while generally, depressive episodes
have to run their course. Anxiety and depression are two very different, though just as harmful
disorders. When you have one, you generally have the other It's a vicious cycle, but luckily, there

people, two countries, or how something or someone has changed. When comparing two things, we

Students attending private universities pay an average tuition of $35,374. Those who attend a
community college for the first two year of their education save $8,000 or more. Since most of the
same financial aid including Pell grants and Stafford loans is available for any institution choice,
students in the lowest income brackets can expect a larger financial aid refund from a community
college than a university. Those who need a university education to meet their career goals may be
able to attend a community college part time while they work and save up. Then, when they transfer
to a university for their final two years, they may have saved enough that with financial aid, they can
pursue their four–year degree.
Community Colleges tend to have fewer students per class, which means more attention from
teacher to student. This is good for students who like access to their instructors so they can ask
questions and avoid getting lost in the course material. Universities are bigger than community
colleges and it takes a little longer to find your way around campus. Most teenagers graduate from
high school eager to leave their parents house and do grown up things. The benefit of attending a
University is living on campus instead of your parent's home. Not all universities have dorms, but the
majority of them do. Which you have to pay for parking, fitness center, laundry and other fees
included. Both university and community colleges sponsor

Men vs Women (Compare and Contrast) Essays
As the age old saying goes, "Men Are from Mars, Women are from Venus". The conflicting views of
men and women have been questioned for centuries, noting how men and women differ in emotion,
affection, and communication.
Women tend to be more emotional and rational then men, whereas men are far less emotional and
react on impulse. The different understanding of the ways that each sex communicates is still to be
studied. Women tend to react more emotionally than men, resulting in submerging themselves, mind
body and soul into making decisions. Meanwhile men, impulsively react to situations for the sake of
having a reason to do so. Men see women as less competent to making decisions that involve a lot of
thought, and this is due to women's...show more content...
When the opposite sex does not understand the other on a certain issue, problems and disagreements
arise. When one person has disentanglement in views, everyone involved is affected because people
tend to feel misconstrued in what they believe is right. This is a significant problem because, if men
and women cannot understand each other, the essence of communication is lost on many levels, in
terms of the work place, love, life, and as well as affairs. Miscommunication in relationships is often
a result of breakups and unhealthy relationships. Women are often much more affected by the ways
that men communicate and resolve issues. Fighting in relationships is a representation of not fully
understanding your mate. People in relationships argue all the time and those arguments are usually
based on a misunderstanding. Women often say that they do not understand men, and men don't
understand women. They try to understand deeper, rather then remaining at the surface of the
problem. The emotional differences of men and women vary in temperaments of emotion which
indicates a disconnection in communication, moral motivation, stereotypes, and chemical reactions
in the brain. Men's and women's emotional outlooks are viewed by stereotypes. Men are usually
the more aggressive sex, and women are usually the more passive sex. Men are seen as the more
sexual gender, and that they solely want sex. Our

Compare And Contrast Prepositions
Prepositions are one of the basic structures that make up the whole sentence. Even though some
sentences can hold meaning without the help of prepositions, others need it in order to be
completely understood. When first learning how to translate and interpret English to Vietnamese or
vice versa, students can face some difficulties regarding the use of prepositions. In both languages, it
is undeniable that prepositions occur at a high rate of frequency in written or spoken form; however,
they have different roles in term of characteristic and usage with a few similarities. Therefore, this
paper's purpose is to compare and contrast prepositions in English and Vietnamese to give students a

This is clearly represented in English, for many research and studies about prepositions have been

different in different languages?". That was the reason that made me first think of this topic when
deciding what to write about. Throughout this paper, we will cover from the basic definition to the
usage and characteristics of prepositions in both English and Vietnamese in a contrastive view. I will
also provide some implications at the end to help students of Translating and Interpreting use

  • 1. Comparison-Contrast Writing 1.Comparison–contrast writing holds two or more things, phenomena, or concepts side by side– with comparison focusing on similarities, and contrast focusing on differences. By looking at subjects side–by–side, we more clearly see their unique and shared traits. 2.Writers commonly compare and contrast subjects in order to explain how, why, and to what effect their distinguishing features make the subjects similar or different. The writer believes that his or her comparative analysis of the topic will enrich readers' understanding of that topic. Writers address a wide range of topics through comparison–contrast: people, events, phenomena, technologies, problems, products, stories, and so on. 3.Comparable items are types of same thing. The subjects are of the same order – one cannot simply be an example of the other. Once writers choose the criteria, those criteria must be applied consistently. For help comparing and contrasting subjects, use a Venn Diagram. List the subjects' differences on the left or right and their similarities in the center. 4.Whole vs. whole discusses items separately, giving a strong overview of each. This pattern works well with...show more content... Write the writer first draft. When writing in the subject–by–subject pattern it should include the following: an opening that gets the readers' attention, introduces the subjects, offers a thesis; a body that discusses the first subject, then analyze the second subject, discuss traits parallel to those the reader addressed with the first subject; a conclusion that summarizes similarities, differences, and implications. When writing in the trait–by–trait pattern it should include the following: an opening that gets the readers' attention, introduce the subjects, and offer a thesis; a body that compare and/or contrast the two subjects trait by trait; include transitions that help readers look back and forth between the two subjects; a conclusion that summarize the key relationships and note their Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 4. Compare and Contrast The Compare/ Contrast Essay First, let's explain compare and contrast: When we compare, we show our readers a subject's similarities. When we contrast, we show our readers a subject's differences. Compare and Contrast essays are learning–process essays. You learn about your subject as you gather and organize information. This type of essay takes a bit of organization, and it's this organizational process, this gathering of facts, that helps you learn as you go. You will create lists of qualities or traits that each of your subjects has, and as you do this, you will discover insights to your subject that, at first glance, you may not have realized were there. It's like buying a new shirt. The moment you spread it out on...show more content... And you will either compare or contrast, not both. Be careful, sometimes going point by point can make your writing sound tedious and repetitive. Watch your language and transition words. Use several points at a time. Ending: As in the argumentative essay, bring it all together. Allow your ending to go back to your thesis. Use the transitional words on the next page to help your paper's coherence. Transitions and other connecting words and connecting sentences should be used throughout. Remember: There are no hard and fast rules as to how many comparisons or contrasts you should offer. For a thorough look into your subject, you must offer enough comparisons or contrasts or both to make a valid statement. Transitional Words (Conjunctival Adverbs) Use these words to help you connect your thoughts, your sentences, and your paragraphs: (Lest you wish to sound pedantic, tiptoe with caution through words such as "indeed," and "of course.") addition again, also, and, and then, besides, equally important, finally, first, further, furthermore, in addition, in the first place, last, moreover, next, second, still, too comparison also, in the same way, likewise, similarly

  • 6. High School vs. College Essay examples High School vs. College A very important part of life is education. In order to acquire a satisfying education, one should complete high school prior to college. College and high school have two different levels of education, but both are trying to further student's knowledge. As recent high school graduates and college freshman's many can clarify similarities and differences between the two. Some obvious similarities are that both have assignments, classrooms, and students. Although college and high school have many differences three of the main ones are the teachers, classes, and responsibilities. Teachers and college professors are one main difference. Classes in high school generally consist of no more that 25 students. Counselors usually arrange your schedule the way they think is best for you. You are not responsible for knowing what it takes to graduate. Usually the school year is 26 weeks long; classes may have to be taken the whole year in order to get credit for them. You are graded on most assignments done in class. In college some classes may have from 75–100 students. It is your responsibility to enroll in the classes that are required for your major, plus a week for final exams. The year is divided into two 14 week semesters; most classes need to be taken the complete semester in order to get credit. College professors tend to grade students on tests and major papers. Responsibility has a lot to do when it comes to high school and college. When you attend high school you are provided textbooks for each class. Your time is usually structured by others (parents and/or teachers). Many parents are there to wake you up in the morning before school starts. In high school you are required to go to school everyday. You often read or hear presentations once in order to learn what you need to know. Students are expected to read short stories at home which will be re–taught in class. When in college you must pay for each textbook necessary for class. Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Comparison And Contrast Essay Topics Chapter 16, Comparison and Contrast, explains the purpose and functions of comparison and/or contrast essays as well as how to use them in students' essays. Comparison and contrast means finding similarities, differences, or both. Comparison and contrast essays commonly have three purposes. First, they are important in expressing ideas. For example, I want to talk about my ideas about hip–hop and rap music so I compare and contrast them. The second purpose is to inform people. I may want to tell the audience that there are many similarities in two different religions. Third, I can persuade people through comparing and contrasting two things. For instance, I will argue that reading e–books is better than printed books by comparing and contrasting Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Compare and Contrast Two Short Stories Compare and Contrast Two Short Stories–– Landlady by Roald Dahl and Chemistry by Graham Swift There are lots of great short stories out there, but in my opinion, both 'Chemistry' by Graham Swift and 'The Landlady' by Roald Dahl are two of the most unique and effective stories. They share both similarities and differences throughout. Comparing and contrasting the way the authors use their inimitable writing style to achieve their intentions in the story will give us more idea how these stories are alike and distinct. In a way, these two stories are similar because both the authors had carefully chosen the words ...show more content... In the beginning , Billy thought the landlady was 'terribly nice',which he was quite grateful to have such a nice landlady who give him a well–appointed service, but as the conversations go on, Billy was then frightened by her weird and creepy contents, he 'sat there staring straight ahead of him into the far corner of the room, biting his lower lip.' tells the readers that he's begin to frightened and suspect landlady, foreshadowing the readers that she might be doing something that couldn't be trusted by Billy. In another way, these two stories are different because the authors have been using different perspective when narrating the story. In 'Chemistry', author's written the story in the word of narrator, mixing both the perspective of adult and young boy's. Line" My father's death was a far less remote event than my grandfather's but no more explicable, I was only seven." can be a good example. Almost the whole story was written in past tense, added to the effect of recalling. He's shown a grown up man recalling memories when he was back in 7–10 years old. This kind of writing style makes readers felt more personal, because the subject is 'I', when reading out the story, readers will feel like they're experiencing the narrators' life, as if they are the narrator. Also, another interesting fact about this kind of writing style is that if I were to look at the same events in other character's perspective, it might be another whole different story because Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Online learning is basically a system which involves electronic media and information. In simple it is getting training and communication research through electronic media. It would not be wrong to call online learning, the 'future of education'. Online learning does have some weak points, but the solutions that have been provided are more than enough to cover up the cons. Online learning system is not perfect, it has some deficiencies, but it's definitely the system of the future. Many people still prefer traditional universities as the best way to get knowledge and a degree but online education is also a good proven alternative. Through online education students can study in the environment they find comfortable and the time they are free. All of this is for free as most online course which universities offer don't have any fee or if some courses have then that is very less as compared to the price of normal course at a university. Students in the USA are dissimilar to students of the UK that they start high school right away after middle school, when they reach 14 years. American high school consists of 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grades, which are also known as freshman, sophomore, junior and senior. In the USA there are also Honours, Advanced Placement, and International Baccalaureate classes that are more rigid and the load of homework is much greater (USA Study Guide, 2007). The transition from middle to high school is challenging indeed because the type of education that is used in each institution is very different. At high school students not only acquire knowledge, but also get some experience, which is very useful for them in future. Secondly, the UK and the USA have totally different examinations for the students. GCSE and A–level are the main exams in the UK, whereas the USA has its own method of assessment, which is called GPA. GCSE is the General Certificate of Secondary Education. It is a two–year study course for 15–16 years students. Usually British students pass GSCE exam when they reach the age of 16. GCSE is essential for students who want to take further examinations, such as AS/A–levels and enter the university or a college of higher education (Kozma, 2010). In analysing the effectiveness of their leadership, this essay will evaluate the traits, personality, history, experience, and values of each leader. The ability to bring people together around shared beliefs and a common organisational purpose to create a sense of belonging is a prerequisite for an effective leader and will formulate the basis of defining an effective leader for the purpose of this paper. Reeves Professor Andrew Smith ENGL 102–B46 LUO Thesis Statement The stories "The Lottery" and "Young Goodman Brown" both appear to show that human behavior and judgment can be flawed, even if the person's intentions appear good to them. There is a level of fear and underlying evil in Puritan settings in both stories. I. Introduction/Statement of Thesis II. Themes and Author's Purpose A. The Lottery i. Just because something has always been done, does not make it right or just; following the crowd can be dangerously wrong and evil. ii. The theme of the story "The Lottery" is blind acceptance of something just because it is considered tradition. In Jackson's "The Lottery", symbols are utilized to help show the theme. The name of the story, "The Lottery", itself is a symbol. The term lottery can be viewed, by most, as a good thing, a hope in winning, but winning the lottery takes on a very different, very dark meaning in Jackson's story. Also, the names of the characters are symbols as well. For example, Graves is a name that would portray death and Summers is a bright and cheerful name. Also, the name Old Man Warner would show tradition. Next, is the use of the black box and the black dot on the paper. The color black is showing darkness, evil, and death. The tradition of the black box is a symbol, in the fact that it is worn and faded, but still used by the villagers. Shirley Jackson conveys the theme very clearly through the use of symbols. In the end, the villagers are shown to be evil and murderous just because of tradition. The villagers do not seem to have a problem with murdering others within the lottery because it is what they have always done and no one is going to declare that what they are doing is wrong. This shows the reader that following blindly can have dangerous consequences. The theme of "Young BrownGoodman" is that the main character is basing his beliefs and faith on what others in his life believe or have faith in. • 14. Compare And Contrast Anxiety And Depression There are many similarities between mental disorders like anxiety and depression. Often times, many symptoms of one disorder stem off of having the other. For example, symptoms of anxiety can be brought on by depressive thoughts, such as thoughts about suicide, and visa versa. The differences, however, are far more prominent than the ways they are the same. Anxiety is a disorder characterized by fear, doubt, and a sense of vulnerability. People with anxiety tend to have less noticeable symptoms than people with depression, as symptoms of anxiety are things such as physical sensations of strong emotions of fear. Depression symptoms are more physical and noticeable from the outside, such as lack of eating or sleep, or lack of interest in doing things. People with depression may become...show more content... Anxiety can also run in families, or be caused by outside conditions such as excessive stress, drastic changes in living conditions, or abuse. Depression on the other hand, is caused by changes in brain chemistry. However, like anxiety, depression can be caused by genetics and medical conditions that create an imbalance of the brain's chemicals. Depressive episodes often last for days, leaving a person mopey and sluggish, or, on the other side of the spectrum, frighteningly up, or manic. This is when a person seems to have boundless energy and doesn't sleep for days. Episodes of anxiety last much shorter periods of time, flaring up and disappearing within the same day. Symptoms of an episode can include increased heart rate, sweating, and trembling. These can be combatted with controlled breathing, while generally, depressive episodes have to run their course. Anxiety and depression are two very different, though just as harmful disorders. When you have one, you generally have the other It's a vicious cycle, but luckily, there are proven ways to break it.
