Examples Of Reader Response Theory
Reader Response Theory Reader–response theory identifies the reader as an affective agent who
imparts real exist–ence and life to the work, completing its meaning through interpretation. Reader–
response criti–cism argues that literature should be viewed as art in which each reader creates his or
her own–most likely unique, text–related performance. I am using Wolfgang Iser and Stanley Fish's
takes on Reader Response for my study. Iser's Theory of Reception and Transactional Reader
Response Theory According to Iser, any literary text which is a product of the Writer's intentional
acts part–ly controls the response of a reader; however, this includes an abundance of gaps. In order
to comprehend more clearly, the reader must take action in active participation in attempting to
cre–atively fill these gaps with the given information of the test put before him; Thereby allowing
the Reader and the text to undergo a transactional process. Iser speaks of the Actual reader in
distinction to the Implied reader who is formed within a text and expected to react and respond in
specific ways to the response inducing structure of the text. The actual reader, however, is an
individual with its own personal experiences accumu–lated as baggage wherein responses actually
are continuously and inevitably changed...show more content...
What lies behind Fish's thinking is a strong view of the social construction of reality; as he firmly
believes that knowledge is not objective but always socially conditioned. All that one thinks and
knows is an interpretation that is only made possible by the social context in which one lives. For
Fish the very thought one thinks are made possible by presuppositions of the community in which
one lives and furthermore the socially conditioned individual, which all individuals are, cannot think
beyond the limits made possible by the culture. This culture is referred to by Fish as an interpre–tive

Examples Of Literary Criticism Of Hamlet
After reading your chosen essay of literary criticism, respond to the following questions:
1) What was your author's thesis?
Loberg's starts her essay by informing the reader that physical violence is the most infrequent form
of aggression and that people prefer alternatives that give bigger effect and less punishment. Her
thesis implies that Hamlet shows a great amount of examples of how humans psychologically treat
each other. Characters spread aggression in non physical violent ways such as spreading lies,
framing others and etc. Opening to the thought that the Queen was not seen as a suspect to Ophelia's
death because she did not use physical violence.

6) What did this particular perspective add to your understanding of Hamlet?
I found this essay to be very intriguing and it definitely changed my perspective on Queen Gertrude,
it made me want to pay more attention to hints in reading and makes me want to think more in
depth. If I never read this essay I would have never thought that Gertrude could have been involved
in Ophelia's death.
7) Did you notice anything about the way in which this essay was written that seems to contradict
essay "rules" you have been taught in the past? If so, explain
I realized that the author did not order her information from first events to the end events but a quite
random order, which is something I've never done because I believe it is just common sense to order
information chronologically which I found surprising that the author would do that, she still
managed to get her points across and have me understand but I think it would have been more
efficient if the author had her information in chronological

HOW TO WRITE A STRONG THESIS STATEMENT A WRITING CENTRE HANDOUT
1. UNDERSTAND THE ACADEMIC WRITING TASK
You can begin to formulate a good thesis statement only after you have got a solid grasp of the
purpose of the assignment. If you're asked to write a paper in response to a specific assignment
question, then your first task is make sure that you clearly understand the academic writing task.
Determine which of the following critical thinking skills you are primarily being asked to apply to
your object(s) of study: analysis comparison evaluation argumentation interpretation reflection

Remember that a tentative thesis statement is not something set in stone; rather, it is something
meant to help you focus your analysis and research so that the writing task becomes manageable.
You should not attempt to start collecting and analyzing evidence until you have an idea of the
main argument you would like make in your paper. Generating the thesis statement, then, can be
thought of as a recursive process. In the early stages of planning and writing, the tentative thesis
helps you focus on the evidence in a certain way, but as you get further along in the writing process
the analysis of evidence should also help you clarify the thesis statement (Rosenwasser et al. 132).
The writers of Writing Analytically recommend that you ask yourself the following questions as you
go through the process of generating a main claim for your essay:
3
What kinds of patterns or implications emerge when I look closely at my evidence?
What kind of evidence and support do I need to support my tentative thesis? What kind of evidence
cannot be adequately accounted for by my tentative thesis? How can I explain the mismatches
between my thesis statement and my selected evidence?
How can I rewrite my thesis statement in order to accommodate the evidence that doesn't fit?
This practice of constantly readjusting the thesis statement to match the evidence and analysis will
ultimately lead you to write a polished and defensible thesis statement in your final

The Crucible Response Essay
Arthur Miller's "The Crucible" was written in response to the United States and Russia Red Scare.
Miller used the "The Crucible" to inform people of how hysteria of the Salem witch trials resembled
the communist accusations happening within the American government. At the time, McCarthy's
"witch hunts" for communist committing sedition.
As opposed to the Red Scare, "The Crucible" started due to an actual witch craft incident. The Red
Scare however, began due to real accounts of treason and communism within United State
government. A speech made by Joseph McCarthy, a senator during the Red Scare, started the
communist hunt, the speech mentioned government workers who showed obvious signs of

conjured "57 cases of individuals who would appear to be either card–carrying members or certainly
loyal to the communist party" (Joe McCarthy and the Press 21). Hale and McCarthy resemble each
other considering the fact that Hale put the idea of witchcraft in the heads of the citizens of Salem,
and McCarthy insinuated that people were communist. Proctor describes Hale as a "broken
minister" (MIller 1179; Act II) just as McCarthy was a broken senator, "a revolutionist without any
revolutionary vision" (Senator Joe McCarthy; Rovere 8); these 'hunts' were not feasible. A political
cartoonist of the time, Herbert Block, drew a vehicle with the words "Committee On Un–American
Activities" it was driven by people who worked for HUAC who ran over men and women in the
streets, creating panic among the citizens. The caption of the cartoon states "It's okay––– We're
Communist", which means this is how they tried to justify their actions. McCarthy was able to gain
popularity at the expensive of the public's fear, running over innocent Americans for a crime that
couldn't be proven. America's view change from communist

In addition, it is of vital importance that those living in coastal states are aware of when a possible

In all, Earth's oceans are diverse systems that all of life depends on for survival. The oceans act as
a large conveyor belt; transporting varying volumes of water do different parts of the world. Any
kind of alterations or disruptions to this conveyor belt causes regional sea levels to rise. These
alterations are greatly impacted by anthropogenic climate change, the long–term alteration of earth's
climate as a result of human activities. The main ingredient behind climate change is the constant
changing of global temperatures due to increasing levels of greenhouse gas emissions produced by
humans. Mankind became intertwined with climate change during the industrial

Response To Rachel Thesis
While reading Rachel essay, what I really enjoy from her paper was the way she wove in her
quotes. The way she wove in her quotes through her sentences gave her to more structure as well
strong evidence to back up her claim agreeing with the sources for her research. I would like to use
that method into my writing because not only does it help your structure and seem easier to read
when reading the argument, it flows with her writing, that is something I would like to implement

Essay on The National Response Framework
Having a basic understanding of community or national emergency plans can assist families in
disaster. This is especially true during the response phase. The National Response Framework
(NRF) is a great example of a national community reference. According to FEMA's publication,
"The National Response Framework," from 2013, the NRF is a guide which describes the basis
of national response to any form of disaster. The NRF was developed from a long line of response
guidance plans. The first was the Federal Response plan which was replaced by the National
Response Plan. Then in 2008, the NRF was developed to make national response guidance more
efficient as well as to include practices created after Hurricane Katrina. The NRF is comprised

The Incident Command System Today, the Incident Command System (ICS) is a major
component of NIMS and is widely used in emergency management response. However, this was
not always the case. According to David A. McEntire and Gregg Dawson, authors of the article,
"The intergovernmental Context," ICS was originally developed by the fire service in 1970. Its
purpose was to assist in the command of wildfire events. It was unique because it standardized
operations, yet offered flexibility so that it could be used on any number of events, regardless of size
or type (McEntire & Dawson, 2007, p. 63).
The book, "National Incident Management System: Principles and Practice," by Dr. Donald W.
Walsh, Dr. Hank T. Christen, Christian E. Callsen, Geoffrey T. Miller, Paul M. Maniscalco,
Graydon C. Lord, and Neal J. Dolan, describes ICS as, "...a system for domestic incident
management that is based on an expandable, flexible structure..." (Walsh, et al., 2012, p. 12). Due
to this flexibility, Walsh et al. state that ICS is commonly used by all levels of government as well
as by a number of non–governmental agencies and the private sector. ICS is structured around five
sections. These sections are command, operations, planning, logistics, and finance/administration

deciding to be a financial analyst in the future. However, I realized that I have to meet the University

I have many problems in English writing. After failing the Writing Skills Test, I took an English

class and satisfy the UWSR because my collection of essays in the portfolio shows that I made a
great improvement in thesis statements composition, development of ideas, and organization.
To begin with, I have improved tremendously on writing a thesis statement. The thesis statement

unsupported thesis failing to present my augment to the readers. With the help of a tutor, I learned

Thesis Statement On Poverty
One can easily identify the fact that poverty is generally considered as one among the most serious
problems in human life. But the mainstream society provides less importance to this serious problem
because human life did undergo transformation from empathy to disinterestedness. The western
nations are comparatively safe from poverty and related issues, but the third–world nations are under
the threat of the same. The problems related to global poverty is unimaginable because it forces
human beings to do anything, just for survival. Still, world nations, especially the developed nations,

The physiological problems related to poverty are impossible to cure without enough food. If
poverty is a disease, proper medication can solve the problem and save millions. But poverty itself
is the grass–root level reason behind physiological problems. When around half of the global
population is facing threat from poverty, one can expect serious physiological problems. Similarly,
death related to hunger originating from poverty is a serious problem among the third–world
nations. One can see that children, women, and elderly citizens are totally exposed to poverty
related physiological problems in general. To be specific, extreme poverty hinders millions from
having enough food to sustain their lives. Here, food banks can play an important role in keeping
millions away from the clutches of health problems. One can see that life is poor surroundings can
result in several health problems. Besides, poverty hinders millions from having direct access to

international organizations. Similarly, health problems stun the growth of millions of children in the
famine stricken nations. So, it is evident that physiological problems related to global poverty can

Thesis Statement In Night By Elie Wiesel
When responding to situations in life people must consider if doing so will benefit themselves or the
people around them. In circumstances that demand quick thinking people often can not form a
concrete decision based on how little information and time they have. In life people frequently must
try to do so through their daily battles with the people around them as well as themselves.
Thesis Statement
In the literary memoir Night, Elie Wiesel illustrates how he faces many situations that require him
to respond. Eliezer did not respond when he was beat by a guard but instead takes the advice of a
french lady and waits until the moment is right as well he did not respond to the Kapo who beat his
father as a result many instances just like these continually happen. Eliezer then finally responds to
the men trying to throw his father out of the train car as he knows if he does not say anything his
father will die.
Body 1
While Elie is working at the electrical warehouse, Idek the Kapo goes on one of his fits of rage
and beats him after the Kapo is done beating him a french lady strides over to him disclosing her
advice. 'Bite your lip, little brother....Keep your anger and hatred for another day, for later on. The
day will come, but not now....Wait. Grit your teeth and wait....'" (Pg.53) She is merely expressing
how one must choose their battles and that even though humans must stand up for themselves
sometimes we must wait to do so as timing is everything.
Elie Wiesel struggles to fight through the concentration camp he must deal with many unfriendly
encounters. "I had watched it all happening without moving. I kept silent. In fact, I thought of
stealing away in order not to suffer the blows. What's more, if I felt anger at that moment, it was
not directed at the Kapo but at my father. Why couldn't he have avoided Idek's wrath? That was
what life in a concentration camp had made of me..." (pg. 54). Elie wrestles with the idea of how
to respond and even if he should react he debates that if he does respond then he will get beat, but
if he does not respond then he must watch his father be beat so he thinks to himself what would be
more painful? By the end of the beating it is kind of ironic how Eliezer is more

What is a Reading Response Essay?
A Reading Response essay: * Summarizes what you read. * Gives your reaction to the text.
Your reaction will be one or more of the following: * Agreement/disagreement with the ideas in the

of that is to re–tell the same story in the conclusion with a different (usually better) ending.
Examples: * On an essay about cell phone use in cars, you could open with a scenario showing a
person getting a call while driving and thinking about what to do. In the conclusion, you could have
the end of the scenario–maybe the driver pulls over to take the call, or decides to let voicemail take
it. * On an essay about dealing with a family member with Alzheimer's, you could open with a
conversation between family members trying to figure out what to do. You can conclude with a
conversation between the same people after they have decided to place that person in a nursing
home. * On an essay about oil drilling in the Gulf, you could open by describing vividly the
oil–soaked coastline and the dying wildlife. You could conclude with what that coastline looks like
now. * On any topic which you have personal experience, you can open with part of your story, and
then conclude with the ending of your story.

Response to Self–Reliance by Ralph Waldo Emerson
I believe that, essentially, life consists of a series of choices. A grouping of these choices in one
direction or another makes us who we are, and ultimately we have control over our lives. What
makes one person different from another is his own set of choices. When going through life's
motions, we develop certain worldviews and ideas and values to live by. We develop an opinion of
what makes a person "great." In the well–known essay "Self–Reliance", Ralph Waldo Emerson
provides a beautiful way of approaching these choices, and he reveals a very inspiring set of values
centralized around going through life answering only to yourself. I love the way Emerson evaluates
the society we live...show more content...
I share this view of society with Emerson: "Society is a joint–stock company, in which the members
agree, for the better securing of his bread to each shareholder, to surrender the liberty and culture of
the eater. The virtue of request is conformity. Self–Reliance is its aversion."
In everything that I do I decide to go the road less traveled, I make the choice to see something in
a different way than everyone else. I choose not to wear the same clothes as most people do, I
choose to always say what is on my mind and I try my hardest to not let what people may think of
me interfere with what I say I and do. I consider myself a non–conformist for these reasons. Even
when it comes to culture: I would much prefer the independent, locally–owned video shop where I
can find obscure movies to the gigantic Blockbuster. I don't choose to listen to Popular music or
buy the CD's of artists being shoved down our throats by MTV. I choose to find my own flavor, to
disregard the overwhelming majority to the best of my ability. My feelings go along with Emerson's
again in "Self–Reliance": "A man is to carry himself in the presence of all opposition, as if every
thing were titular and ephemeral but he." Continuing on the subject of conformity Emerson provides
the famous line: "Whoso would be a man must be a nonconformist." Stressing again the view of

Allegory of the Cave Summary and Response Essay
Marlo Diorio
Dr. Mishra – College Writing I
"Allegory of the Cave" "Allegory of the Cave", written by Plato, is story that contrasts the
differences between what is real and what is perceived. He opens with Glaucon talking to
Socrates. He has Glaucon imagine what it would be like to be chained down in a cave, not able to
see anything other than what is in front of him. He tells a story of men that were trapped in a cave
and were prisoners to the truth. These prisoners have only seen shadows. But because of their
ignorance, these slaves to the cave believe that the shadows are real. The story goes on to say that
one of the men has been dragged out of the cave. He is not happy to see the real world, yet upset

It would never be an easy path to walk down, and it would take a lot of struggling. Only certain
determined people will actually make it to the opposite side. Socrates says these most qualified
people should be the ones to lead the public. I believe this is also true in today's society. I say this
because when it comes to election time, we as a country are not going to vote for an uneducated
lunatic. I believe that the president should be someone intelligent with good morals and very
qualified. In order to reach that high point, you must go out of your comfort zone, like the prisoner
did. In life, people go out of their comfort zones all of the time. I've always believed that in order
to achieve something you've never had/done, you must do something you've never done before,
such as stepping out of your comfort zone. Only the best can be found when you make an attempt
to extend yourself as a human being. I relate the cave in this story to the social norm. No one
wants to step out of it because I their life, the norm is all there is. I believe the shadows would
represent all of the other things that could be out there, but they have no desire to go find out what
they are. They are too comfortable with what they have and haven't gone looking for more. The
cave is a comfort zone for the prisoners in Plato's time and for teenagers today. Without the outside
world, there is no curiosity, no questioning. I believe it is important to

Shakespeare believes that it is a man's natural instinct to romanticize women. While Celia is

Shakespeare believes that women are more prone to crying and that they are the weaker gender.
When Rosalind is talking to Aliena, she says "I could find in my heart to disgrace my man's
apparel and to cry like a woman, but I must comfort the weaker vessel, as doublet and hose ought to
show itself courageous to petticoat". (2.4.4–8) In the past, it was believed that because of the fact
that women give birth, they are the fairer sex. Most people believed that women could not protect
themselves, and that they needed courageous men to protect them. Shakespeare also portrays
women in a stereotypical manner, in the sense that it was believed that women normally rave over
males, making them seem foolish. In Scene 3 Act 2, Rosalind is giddy over Orlando, perpetuating
the stereotype that woman go crazy over guys. (3.2.198–208) Tie to the topic sentence. Another

they were nagging.

9/11 Terrorist AttacksTopic: 9/11 Terrorist AttacksQuestion: How did the 9/11 terrorist attacks affect
America ?Thesis Statement: The 9/11 terrorist attacks affected America so much so the U.S.
tightened airport security. Lots of people lost family members and that affected the way these
Americans live now.The 9/11 terrorist attacks had a great impact on America, let me give you a
little bit of background on why that is. Basically, the terrorist group Al– Qaeda hijacked 4 planes to
basically use as missiles. Something of this magnitude had never happened in the United States
before. This act of terrorism left scars on Americans forever. As I mentioned before, there were 4
planes hijacked each was intended for a certain large target. In total there were 19 men who hijacked
those 4 planes1....show more content...
Furthermore, for the last plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania and is thought to have been
heading for the white house. In total there were 2,996 people who died in3. Of those 2,996 people
400 of those were police and firefighters4. It The plane that crashed in Pennsylvania didn't crash in
the open field on purpose. 1 http://www.history.com/topics/9–11–attacks2 http://www.history.com

As a matter of fact, it was the combined effort of the people on the plane that made the plane crash in
field instead of a populated area. Many new policies were established due to the terrorist attacks. For
example, airlines tightened security immensely after this. It seems like it takes a whole day to get
through the inspections. This is just one thing that changed after the terrorist attacks. Something
rather notable is the President George W. Bush actually went to war against the terrorists without
permission from congress. Additionally, another thing that changed drastically is the way Americans
feel toward middle

  • 1. Examples Of Reader Response Theory Reader Response Theory Reader–response theory identifies the reader as an affective agent who imparts real exist–ence and life to the work, completing its meaning through interpretation. Reader– response criti–cism argues that literature should be viewed as art in which each reader creates his or her own–most likely unique, text–related performance. I am using Wolfgang Iser and Stanley Fish's takes on Reader Response for my study. Iser's Theory of Reception and Transactional Reader Response Theory According to Iser, any literary text which is a product of the Writer's intentional acts part–ly controls the response of a reader; however, this includes an abundance of gaps. In order to comprehend more clearly, the reader must take action in active participation in attempting to cre–atively fill these gaps with the given information of the test put before him; Thereby allowing the Reader and the text to undergo a transactional process. Iser speaks of the Actual reader in distinction to the Implied reader who is formed within a text and expected to react and respond in specific ways to the response inducing structure of the text. The actual reader, however, is an individual with its own personal experiences accumu–lated as baggage wherein responses actually are continuously and inevitably changed...show more content... What lies behind Fish's thinking is a strong view of the social construction of reality; as he firmly believes that knowledge is not objective but always socially conditioned. All that one thinks and knows is an interpretation that is only made possible by the social context in which one lives. For Fish the very thought one thinks are made possible by presuppositions of the community in which one lives and furthermore the socially conditioned individual, which all individuals are, cannot think beyond the limits made possible by the culture. This culture is referred to by Fish as an interpre–tive Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Loberg's starts her essay by informing the reader that physical violence is the most infrequent form of aggression and that people prefer alternatives that give bigger effect and less punishment. Her thesis implies that Hamlet shows a great amount of examples of how humans psychologically treat each other. Characters spread aggression in non physical violent ways such as spreading lies, framing others and etc. Opening to the thought that the Queen was not seen as a suspect to Ophelia's death because she did not use physical violence. I found this essay to be very intriguing and it definitely changed my perspective on Queen Gertrude, it made me want to pay more attention to hints in reading and makes me want to think more in depth. If I never read this essay I would have never thought that Gertrude could have been involved in Ophelia's death. 7) Did you notice anything about the way in which this essay was written that seems to contradict essay "rules" you have been taught in the past? If so, explain I realized that the author did not order her information from first events to the end events but a quite random order, which is something I've never done because I believe it is just common sense to order information chronologically which I found surprising that the author would do that, she still managed to get her points across and have me understand but I think it would have been more efficient if the author had her information in chronological Get more content on HelpWriting.net

UNDERSTAND THE ACADEMIC WRITING TASK You can begin to formulate a good thesis statement only after you have got a solid grasp of the purpose of the assignment. If you're asked to write a paper in response to a specific assignment question, then your first task is make sure that you clearly understand the academic writing task. Determine which of the following critical thinking skills you are primarily being asked to apply to your object(s) of study: analysis comparison evaluation argumentation interpretation reflection Your thesis statement, then, should take a form that reflects the goal of the writing task. 2. Remember that a tentative thesis statement is not something set in stone; rather, it is something meant to help you focus your analysis and research so that the writing task becomes manageable. You should not attempt to start collecting and analyzing evidence until you have an idea of the main argument you would like make in your paper. Generating the thesis statement, then, can be thought of as a recursive process. In the early stages of planning and writing, the tentative thesis helps you focus on the evidence in a certain way, but as you get further along in the writing process the analysis of evidence should also help you clarify the thesis statement (Rosenwasser et al. 132). The writers of Writing Analytically recommend that you ask yourself the following questions as you go through the process of generating a main claim for your essay: 3 What kinds of patterns or implications emerge when I look closely at my evidence? What kind of evidence and support do I need to support my tentative thesis? What kind of evidence cannot be adequately accounted for by my tentative thesis? How can I explain the mismatches between my thesis statement and my selected evidence? How can I rewrite my thesis statement in order to accommodate the evidence that doesn't fit? This practice of constantly readjusting the thesis statement to match the evidence and analysis will

Hale and McCarthy resemble each other considering the fact that Hale put the idea of witchcraft in the heads of the citizens of Salem, and McCarthy insinuated that people were communist. Proctor describes Hale as a "broken minister" (MIller 1179; Act II) just as McCarthy was a broken senator, "a revolutionist without any revolutionary vision" (Senator Joe McCarthy; Rovere 8); these 'hunts' were not feasible. A political cartoonist of the time, Herbert Block, drew a vehicle with the words "Committee On Un–American Activities" it was driven by people who worked for HUAC who ran over men and women in the streets, creating panic among the citizens. The caption of the cartoon states "It's okay––– We're Communist", which means this is how they tried to justify their actions. McCarthy was able to gain popularity at the expensive of the public's fear, running over innocent Americans for a crime that couldn't be proven. This is especially true during the response phase. The National Response Framework (NRF) is a great example of a national community reference. According to FEMA's publication, "The National Response Framework," from 2013, the NRF is a guide which describes the basis of national response to any form of disaster. The NRF was developed from a long line of response guidance plans. The first was the Federal Response plan which was replaced by the National Response Plan. This includes actions such as household hazard reduction and participating in voluntary organizations and programs (Federal Emergency Management Agency, 2013c, p. 8). The Incident Command System Today, the Incident Command System (ICS) is a major component of NIMS and is widely used in emergency management response. However, this was not always the case. According to David A. McEntire and Gregg Dawson, authors of the article, "The intergovernmental Context," ICS was originally developed by the fire service in 1970. Its purpose was to assist in the command of wildfire events. It was unique because it standardized operations, yet offered flexibility so that it could be used on any number of events, regardless of size or type (McEntire & Dawson, 2007, p. 63). The book, "National Incident Management System: Principles and Practice," by Dr. Donald W. Walsh, Dr. Hank T. Christen, Christian E. Callsen, Geoffrey T. Miller, Paul M. Maniscalco, Graydon C. Lord, and Neal J. Dolan, describes ICS as, "...a system for domestic incident management that is based on an expandable, flexible structure..." (Walsh, et al., 2012, p. 12). Due to this flexibility, Walsh et al. state that ICS is commonly used by all levels of government as well as by a number of non–governmental agencies and the private sector. ICS is structured around five sections. These sections are command, operations, planning, logistics, and finance/administration (Walsh, et al., 2012, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Thesis Statement I have been an international student at California State University Easy Bay (CSUEB) for almost four years, and during the stay I have learned far more than I expected. I came to CSUEB already deciding to be a financial analyst in the future. However, I realized that I have to meet the University Writing Skills Requirement (UWSR) before graduation. With only four years of studying in English, I have many problems in English writing. After failing the Writing Skills Test, I took an English writing class, which has taught me how to write logically and proficiently. Thus, I should pass this class and satisfy the UWSR because my collection of essays in the portfolio shows that I made a great improvement in thesis statements composition, development of ideas, and organization. In my past, I always composed an unclear and unsupported thesis failing to present my augment to the readers. When developing my idea of the positive sides of a college degree, I provided data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, personal work experience, and a credible article for the New Yorker Magazine to explain and support my claim. • 12. Thesis Statement In Night By Elie Wiesel When responding to situations in life people must consider if doing so will benefit themselves or the people around them. In circumstances that demand quick thinking people often can not form a concrete decision based on how little information and time they have. In life people frequently must try to do so through their daily battles with the people around them as well as themselves. Thesis Statement In the literary memoir Night, Elie Wiesel illustrates how he faces many situations that require him to respond. Eliezer did not respond when he was beat by a guard but instead takes the advice of a french lady and waits until the moment is right as well he did not respond to the Kapo who beat his father as a result many instances just like these continually happen. Eliezer then finally responds to the men trying to throw his father out of the train car as he knows if he does not say anything his father will die. Body 1 While Elie is working at the electrical warehouse, Idek the Kapo goes on one of his fits of rage and beats him after the Kapo is done beating him a french lady strides over to him disclosing her advice. 'Bite your lip, little brother....Keep your anger and hatred for another day, for later on. The day will come, but not now....Wait. Grit your teeth and wait....'" (Pg.53) She is merely expressing how one must choose their battles and that even though humans must stand up for themselves sometimes we must wait to do so as timing is everything. Elie Wiesel struggles to fight through the concentration camp he must deal with many unfriendly encounters. "I had watched it all happening without moving. I kept silent. In fact, I thought of stealing away in order not to suffer the blows. What's more, if I felt anger at that moment, it was not directed at the Kapo but at my father. Why couldn't he have avoided Idek's wrath? That was what life in a concentration camp had made of me..." (pg. 54). Elie wrestles with the idea of how to respond and even if he should react he debates that if he does respond then he will get beat, but if he does not respond then he must watch his father be beat so he thinks to himself what would be more painful? By the end of the beating it is kind of ironic how Eliezer is more Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 14. Response to Self–Reliance by Ralph Waldo Emerson I believe that, essentially, life consists of a series of choices. A grouping of these choices in one direction or another makes us who we are, and ultimately we have control over our lives. What makes one person different from another is his own set of choices. When going through life's motions, we develop certain worldviews and ideas and values to live by. We develop an opinion of what makes a person "great." In the well–known essay "Self–Reliance", Ralph Waldo Emerson provides a beautiful way of approaching these choices, and he reveals a very inspiring set of values centralized around going through life answering only to yourself. I love the way Emerson evaluates the society we live...show more content... I share this view of society with Emerson: "Society is a joint–stock company, in which the members agree, for the better securing of his bread to each shareholder, to surrender the liberty and culture of the eater. The virtue of request is conformity. Self–Reliance is its aversion." In everything that I do I decide to go the road less traveled, I make the choice to see something in a different way than everyone else. I choose not to wear the same clothes as most people do, I choose to always say what is on my mind and I try my hardest to not let what people may think of me interfere with what I say I and do. I consider myself a non–conformist for these reasons. Even when it comes to culture: I would much prefer the independent, locally–owned video shop where I can find obscure movies to the gigantic Blockbuster. I don't choose to listen to Popular music or buy the CD's of artists being shoved down our throats by MTV. I choose to find my own flavor, to disregard the overwhelming majority to the best of my ability. My feelings go along with Emerson's again in "Self–Reliance": "A man is to carry himself in the presence of all opposition, as if every thing were titular and ephemeral but he." Continuing on the subject of conformity Emerson provides the famous line: "Whoso would be a man must be a nonconformist." Allegory of the Cave Summary and Response Essay Marlo Diorio Dr. Mishra – College Writing I "Allegory of the Cave" "Allegory of the Cave", written by Plato, is story that contrasts the differences between what is real and what is perceived. He opens with Glaucon talking to Socrates. He has Glaucon imagine what it would be like to be chained down in a cave, not able to see anything other than what is in front of him. He tells a story of men that were trapped in a cave and were prisoners to the truth. These prisoners have only seen shadows. But because of their ignorance, these slaves to the cave believe that the shadows are real. The story goes on to say that one of the men has been dragged out of the cave. He is not happy to see the real world, yet upset because he is being taken...show more content... It would never be an easy path to walk down, and it would take a lot of struggling. Only certain determined people will actually make it to the opposite side. Socrates says these most qualified people should be the ones to lead the public. I believe this is also true in today's society. I say this because when it comes to election time, we as a country are not going to vote for an uneducated lunatic. I believe that the president should be someone intelligent with good morals and very qualified. In order to reach that high point, you must go out of your comfort zone, like the prisoner did. In life, people go out of their comfort zones all of the time. I've always believed that in order to achieve something you've never had/done, you must do something you've never done before, such as stepping out of your comfort zone. Only the best can be found when you make an attempt to extend yourself as a human being. I relate the cave in this story to the social norm. No one wants to step out of it because I their life, the norm is all there is. I believe the shadows would represent all of the other things that could be out there, but they have no desire to go find out what they are. They are too comfortable with what they have and haven't gone looking for more. The cave is a comfort zone for the prisoners in Plato's time and for teenagers today. Without the outside world, there is no curiosity, no questioning. I believe it is important to Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Shakespeare believes that women are more prone to crying and that they are the weaker gender. When Rosalind is talking to Aliena, she says "I could find in my heart to disgrace my man's apparel and to cry like a woman, but I must comfort the weaker vessel, as doublet and hose ought to show itself courageous to petticoat". (2.4.4–8) In the past, it was believed that because of the fact that women give birth, they are the fairer sex. Most people believed that women could not protect themselves, and that they needed courageous men to protect them. Shakespeare also portrays women in a stereotypical manner, in the sense that it was believed that women normally rave over males, making them seem foolish. In Scene 3 Act 2, Rosalind is giddy over Orlando, perpetuating the stereotype that woman go crazy over guys. (3.2.198–208) Tie to the topic sentence. Another stereotype that Shakespeare brings up is the stereotype that women don't think before they speak, and that they talk all the time. Rosalind says in Act 3 Scene 2 "Do you not know I am a woman? When I think, I must speak". This was a common view, resulting in woman always being told that they were nagging. II.IV.
