Picture this: you’re sleeping away peacefully when all of a sudden the alarm wakes you up. It’s a
jarring feeling. Loud noises disrupt your precious sleep cycle. Instead of getting up, your body
feels tired. You decide to hit the snooze and give yourself ten extra minutes of “rest.” The
problem is that this rest never feels like enough. You hit it again, pretty soon you’re calculating
in your brain how many times you can hit the snooze. Those are some heavy math calculations to
be doing while trying to doze on bed mattresses.
Why Hitting Snooze Makes
Here’s the thing: a new scientific sleep study shows that not only does hitting the snooze button
not get you the rest you need, it actually hurts your sleep cycle. It can also lead to permanent
health consequences. That’s heavy stuff! Especially for when you’re just trying to catch forty
winks on comfortable bed mattresses. Hitting the snooze button can give your body,
“cardiovascular assault.” This is a scary name for stress on your heart. It also can cause
significant long term effects, with links to Alzheimer’s and dementia. “If alarming your heart,
quite literally, were not bad enough, using the snooze feature means you will repeatedly inflict
that cardiovascular assault again and again within a short span of time,” says Matthew Walker, a
sleep scientist at the University of Southern California. The problem lies in the fact that your
body can never get back down into the deep REM cycle. It takes at least a half hour of sleep to
reach those depths. This is because the brain processes sleep gradually, and doesn’t put you into
an immediate deep sleep.
Sleeping on a Comfortable Bed
The solution? Try to plan your sleep better. Make sure that you’re getting to bed early enough
that, best case scenario, you don’t have to use an alarm at all. The natural wake up is always the
best one, and shows that you’re getting enough sleep in general. If you DO have to use an alarm,
make sure that it’s set to the time when you need to get up. Hitting the snooze might seem like
it’s helping you out, but in reality it’s typically just delaying the inevitable. If you’re tired when
you first wake up, you’re going to be tired during the day — no matter how many times you hit
the snooze. Remember that the best and most effective bed mattresses are the ones that are used
for at least eight hours a night! Let’s make a pact, if you’re in love with the snooze, try to go to
bed fifteen minutes earlier every night for a week. By the end of that week, you should be
waking up naturally from your bed mattresses, fighting fit, refreshed and ready to take on the
week. It’s a no-brainer, and an all-sleeper. Sweet dreams.
