1. Derived from ancient Latin word „COMMUNICARE‟ which
means to commune or to share.
According to Brown, "Communication is the process of
transmitting the ideas and thought from one person to another
for the purpose of creating understanding.”
According to Keith Davis, “Communication is the transfer of
information and understanding from one person to another
person.”
Communication, in simple, is the way of reaching others with
facts, ideas, thoughts and values.

4. 1. VERBAL COMMUNICATION
• Verbal communication refers to the form of communication in which message is
transmitted verbally
• Communication is done by word of mouth and a piece of writing.
• Objective of every verbally communication is to have people understand what we
are trying to convey
• In verbal communication remember the acronym KISS(keep it short and simple).
Verbal Communication is further divided into:
1.ORAL COMMUNICATION
In oral communication, Spoken words are used. It includes face-to-face
conversations, speech, telephonic conversation, video, radio, television, voice over
internet.
2.WRITTEN COMMUNICATION
A written message may be printed or hand written. In written communication
message can be transmitted via email, letter, report, memo etc. Message, in written
communication, is influenced by the vocabulary & grammar used, writing style,
precision and clarity of the language used. 4
5. 2.Nonverbal communication
• Nonverbal communication is the sending or receiving of wordless messages.
• We can say that communication other than oral and written, such
as gesture, body language, posture, tone of voice or facial expressions, is called
nonverbal communication. Nonverbal communication is all about the body
language of speaker.
Nonverbal communication have the following three elements:
Appearance
Speaker: clothing, hairstyle, neatness, use of cosmetics
Surrounding: room size, lighting, decorations, furnishings
Body Language
facial expressions, gestures, postures
Sounds
Voice Tone, Volume, Speech rate

8. FLOW OF COMMUNICATION
1. Downward communication : Refers to communication from the
higher level to the lower one in managerial hierarchy.
2. Upward communication : This type of communication flows upward in
the hierarchical level i.e. from subordinate to the superiors.
3. Horizontal communication : This takes place between professional
peer groups or at the same hierarchy levels.
4. Diagonal/crosswise communication : This type of communication
occurs between people who do not to follow rigid norms of communication
protocol and it percolates in all the directions.
