Health and Safety Law Poster (government poster) displayed in
STYC reception area.
Risk assessments carried out for all on and off site activities as
and when required.
Safe systems of work have been developed and implemented that
incorporate minimum staffing levels, accompanied visits and on
site young people signing - in systems.
All equipment to be purchased new - to ensure it meets any
current regulations. All equipment checked for visual/obvious
damage before use.
Display IYSS Service emergency contact phone number and
notify incidents to Senior Worker and duty Service Manager if
appropriate on: 07092 173 638.

2 Insufficient Staff Cover. Minimum Staffing levels:
Somers Town Youth Centre evening sessions to operate with
a minimum of Four paid youth workers on site.
At least TWO members of staff to be regular (not temporary or
new). If this is not possible then STYC should not be opened
for general drop in sessions. This does not apply to outside
groups/bookings or small workshop groups of young people.
ie Girls only gym sessions (2 staff) CSU etc.
Wherever possible a member of staff should cover and monitor the
reception area when the youth centre is open for general sessions.
Staff should register new young people and enter members on to
the IYSS register.
YOS Staff:
A minimum of two Camden YOS staff will be working
from SCYAP during the hours of 09:00am and
17:00pm. During appointments with young people there
will be a minimum of three members of staff. If there
are not three members of staff, appointments will be
relocated.

3 Fire, Explosion or
Electric Shock.
Appropriate smoke or heat alarms fitted in all rooms. Fire
extinguishers (water, foam or powder) fitted in all rooms -
appropriate to room usage/equipment. Fire blanket fitted in kitchen
area. Fire instruction notices displayed in STYC.
At least one member of STYC/YOS staff trained as FIRE
MARSHAL.
Staff advised of Fire and Evacuation procedures (at induction and
staff meetings).
Regular fire drills carried out (at least one per year) with young
people present.
Both fire exits- primary (front of building) and secondary (rear of
building-via Gym/Fitness Studio) to be kept clear.
All electrical equipment to be tested on a regular basis by
contractor and PAT label placed on item/plug (organised by
Premises Manager/Site Officer). Last Carried out: January 2007
(IYSS informed)

All adults approached by staff and challenged/asked to leave the
premises if appropriate.

Young people must be shown how to use equipment and risks
explained i.e.; kettle, toaster, saucepans, knives etc.

draw/dishwasher when not in use.

Safety clothing/gloves etc. to be provided and young people
advised to use during sessions.

  • 2. 1 All Risks or Incidents. If in doubt, ALWAYS CALL APPROPRIATE EMERGENCY SERVICES: DIAL (9)999 Health and Safety Law Poster (government poster) displayed in STYC reception area. Risk assessments carried out for all on and off site activities as and when required. Safe systems of work have been developed and implemented that incorporate minimum staffing levels, accompanied visits and on site young people signing - in systems. All equipment to be purchased new - to ensure it meets any current regulations. All equipment checked for visual/obvious damage before use. Display IYSS Service emergency contact phone number and notify incidents to Senior Worker and duty Service Manager if appropriate on: 07092 173 638.   • 3. 2 Insufficient Staff Cover. Minimum Staffing levels: Somers Town Youth Centre evening sessions to operate with a minimum of Four paid youth workers on site. At least TWO members of staff to be regular (not temporary or new). If this is not possible then STYC should not be opened for general drop in sessions. This does not apply to outside groups/bookings or small workshop groups of young people. ie Girls only gym sessions (2 staff) CSU etc. Wherever possible a member of staff should cover and monitor the reception area when the youth centre is open for general sessions. Staff should register new young people and enter members on to the IYSS register. YOS Staff: A minimum of two Camden YOS staff will be working from SCYAP during the hours of 09:00am and 17:00pm. During appointments with young people there will be a minimum of three members of staff. If there are not three members of staff, appointments will be relocated.   • 4. 3 Fire, Explosion or Electric Shock. Appropriate smoke or heat alarms fitted in all rooms. Fire extinguishers (water, foam or powder) fitted in all rooms - appropriate to room usage/equipment. Fire blanket fitted in kitchen area. Fire instruction notices displayed in STYC. At least one member of STYC/YOS staff trained as FIRE MARSHAL. Staff advised of Fire and Evacuation procedures (at induction and staff meetings). Regular fire drills carried out (at least one per year) with young people present. Both fire exits- primary (front of building) and secondary (rear of building-via Gym/Fitness Studio) to be kept clear. All electrical equipment to be tested on a regular basis by contractor and PAT label placed on item/plug (organised by Premises Manager/Site Officer). Senior worker/ YOS staff 4 Burglary, theft or unknown adult/intruder. Burglar alarm (monitored) installed at STYC. Access points covered by CCTV, system located in Regent high School. Staff advised of security procedures (at induction and staff meetings). All permanent staff offered use of individual locker in general office. Temporary staff may share lockers with others if requested. All adults approached by staff and challenged/asked to leave the premises if appropriate. Knife used as weapon Limit number of young people in kitchen at any one time (use judgement according to activity) – advice: EIGHT young people maximum. Staff to supervise activity, as appropriate for age of young people, i.e. OK to observe from café area for Duke of Edinburgh volunteers (over 14 years). Young people must be shown how to use equipment and risks explained i.e.; kettle, toaster, saucepans, knives etc. Use extractor to maintain comfortable working environment. Sharp knives and scissors to be kept out of site in under counter draw/dishwasher when not in use. Fire blanket fitted in kitchen area. First aid kit kept in general office.   • 6. 10 Pool and Snooker tables - Cues and balls used as weapons. Hall supervised by staff when equipment is used. Suggest equipment is put away (discretely into general office) if there appears to be any tension in the centre. High Medium Senior worker/ All 11 Cooking. Activity to be supervised by appropriate member of staff. Limit number of young people in kitchen at any one time (use judgement according to activity) - suggest EIGHT young people maximum. Consider if appropriate for age of young people. All users to be made aware of rules and regulations, health and hygiene (always wash hands etc). Young people instructed how to use correct colour chopping boards and separate knives for meat/fish/dairy - raw /cooked etc. All users to be inducted into correct and safe use of any equipment by member of staff and risks explained i.e. kettle, toaster, saucepans, knives etc. Safety clothing/gloves etc. to be provided and young people advised to use during sessions. Use extractor to maintain comfortable working environment. Sharp knives and scissors to be kept out of site in under counter draw when not in use. At least one member of STYC staff to have Basic Hygiene certificate. High Medium More staff to train on Basic Hygiene course. See separate risk assessment for Kitchen area.   • 7. 12 Arts and Crafts, Photography. Activity to be supervised by experienced or qualified member of staff as appropriate. All users to be inducted into correct and safe use of equipment/chemicals etc. by member of staff. All users to be made aware of rules and regulations. All tools, chemicals etc. to be kept in cupboards away from young people when not in use. Safety clothing/eye protection etc. to be provided and young people advised to wear during sessions if appropriate. Limit number of young people (use judgement according to activity) – but suggest a MAXIMUM OF twelve per member of staff. Consider if appropriate for age of young people. High Medium YOS staff must not use this room unless it has been risk assessed by a manager prior to the session taking place. Senior worker/ All 13 14 Computer room. Activity to be supervised by experienced or qualified member of staff as appropriate. All users to be made aware of rules and regulations; i.e. No use of inappropriate web sites etc. Limit number of young people (use judgement according to activity) – but up to a MAXIMUM OF SIXTEEN if using IT. Medium Low YOS staff should inform a manager prior to commencing the session. Senior worker/ All 15 Multi Gym/ weights Room and associated equipment. Gym only opened/used when supervised by Level two qualified Gym instructor. All users of gym to be inducted into correct and safe use of equipment by Level two qualified instructor. All users to be made aware of gym rules and regulations. Limit number of young people (use judgement according to activity) – but suggest a MAXIMUM of Thirty Five. Limit use of weights equipment to young people over 14 years old.   • 8. 16 Sports and PE Games in: Regent High School or any other outside space OR: Somers Town Community Sports Centre. Activity to be supervised by experienced or qualified member of staff as appropriate. All users to be made aware of rules and regulations; i.e. No use of inappropriate equipment etc. Staff must always take a mobile phone to sports area, to call for assistance from colleagues or emergency services if required. Limit number of young people (use judgement according to activity) – but up to a MAXIMUM OF SIXTEEN young people per member of staff. High Medium Senior worker/ All 17 Store Room Only for use by staff. Care to be taken with limited height and warning notice displayed. Weight storage limits displayed on wall in cupboard (as instructed by consulting engineer). High Medium Senior worker/ All 18 Office. To be supervised by member of staff if used by young people.
