<ul><li>Nuclear waste  is made mostly by radioactive decay. </li></ul>
<ul><li>What is radioactive decay? </li></ul>
<ul><li>Its the process in which radioactive isotopes release gamma rays and lose particles.  </li></ul>
<ul><li>There are 3 types of radio active decay:alpha, Beta, and gamma. </li></ul>
 
 
 
<ul><li>Can  Nuclear waste  affect our health? </li></ul>
<ul><li>Yes, in a number of ways. One of the largest dangers is that radioactivity is a carcinogen. </li></ul>
<ul><li>A  carcinogen  is a substance that causes cancer. </li></ul>
<ul><li>It also affects our DNA. </li></ul>
<ul><li>How does it affect our DNA? </li></ul>
<ul><li>It affects our DNA in 2 main ways: </li></ul>
<ul><li>1. Isotopes push an electron out of its orbit, if this electron strikes the DNA, it damages it. </li></ul>
<ul><li>2. if this electron collides with a water molecule, it becomes an isotope, damaging your DNA. </li></ul>
<ul><li>All this takes less than 1 second. </li></ul>
<ul><li>Radioactivity relesed from  nuclear waste  can also damage body cells. </li></ul>
<ul><li>HOW? </li></ul>
<ul><li>The electrons can ionize the cell, making it “decay” </li></ul><ul><li>Or it can stop the cell from reproducing. <...
<ul><li>But then how do scientists that handle nuclear waste survive? </li></ul>
<ul><li>They wear special suits, that reflect gamma radiation.  </li></ul>
