If you are a fan of the Harry Potter series of books and movies, you are
familiar with Harry’s mentor, Professor Albus Dumbledore. You are
probably familiar with Fawkes, Professor Dumbledore’s phoenix. A
mythical, birdlike creature, phoenixes have several unique powers: their tears
possess healing powers; they can lift heavy loads with their tail feathers; and
they can disappear and reappear in a flash of fire.
For all these interesting traits, I am most interested in a phoenix’s
immortality: they age until they burst into flames and burn into ash, yet are
re-born from the ashes of their death. This process continues indefinitely
and is the way of a phoenix’s life.
As we continue our journey through Lent, following Jesus’ way, we find
several similarities between the way of a phoenix and the way of Jesus. Jesus
“sets his face toward Jerusalem” knowing that he is going to be put to death,
but confident that he will resurrect to life in three days.
For the disciples, Jesus’ death seems to mark the end of their movement…
but his resurrection breathes new life into their odd, little band of believers
and they go on to form the church. Over and over, through the Bible and in
the history of the church, just about the time it seemed that people of God
had reached their end, God moves and they are reborn. The way of Jesus is
one of life and death and resurrection and it is a reflection of how God
seems to work in the Bible and in life.
Perhaps this is what the Apostle Paul meant when he wrote these words:
I want to know Christ[f] and the power of his resurrection and the
sharing of his sufferings by becoming like him in his death, if
somehow I
may attain the resurrection from the dead. -Philippians 3:10-11, NRSV
We have something scheduled for every day of Holy Week as we walk with
Christ. We will witness his confrontations with opponents; hear his final
teachings to his followers; and bear witness to his suffering and death. We
do this to prepare ourselves for the resurrection: our reminder that God
always has the final word of love and life. This is the power of resurrection:
the secret to clinging to faith when the night is dark, the road is hard, and
the tank is empty. We know that God will speak and new life will spring
forth from the darkest places in our hearts and lives. So let us reach that
point where we burst into flames, become ashes, and emerge reborn, ready
for anything the world or life throws at us.

HIGHLIGHTS OF WORSHIP
March 3 - On this Transfiguration Sunday we shared communion and were blessed by Libeck & Shaun
Vieten who shared special music. Pastor Steve’s sermon was titled, “Christ Revealed,” and it was based on
Luke 9:28-36.
March 6 - Ashes on the Run went well, even in the torrential rain. Pastor Steve and Pastor Mary were in
front of the Sanctuary the majority of the day. Worship took place in Boyer Chapel at 7:00 PM. Pastor
Steve’s message was inspired by Matthew 6:1-6, 16-21 and was titled, “From The Inside Out.”
March 10 - Patty Kelsey shared a children’s moment with Ashley Peat and we put away the Alleluia. Jeff
Thomas shared special music. “Staying In Your Lane,” was the title for Pastor Steve’s sermon, based on
Luke 4:1-13.
March 17 - We were blessed by a special performance from our Synchronicity Bell Choir who performed
“This Little Light of Mine.” The scripture today was, Luke 13:31-35, and Pastor Steve’s message was
titled, “Keep Your Eyes On The Road.” Pastor Steve also shared a moment with the children about
paying attention on your journey.
March 24 - Patty Kelsey shared a message with the kids about how our lives are with and without God.
and Fruits of the Spirit. Pastor Steve’s sermon, “Taking Time To Grow,” was based on Luke 13:1-9

3. It is time to order your Easter Lilies!
A gorgeous Easter Lily cross is erected in the chancel of the
Sanctuary every year. The lovely plants are given in memory and in
honor of loved ones and are $10 per plant.
The plants may be taken home following the 10:30 am

5. Thank you to all who attended the All-
Church meeting Sunday, March 17 after
church. As we continue to feel our way
forward from the results of the 2019
General Conference, your input will help
direct our energy and efforts to ensure
that North Hollywood FUMC remains a
place where everybody is embraced and
affirmed.
The denomination now waits to see
which portions of The Traditional Plan
the Judicial Council declares to be
unconstitutional and unimplementable.
Already, our Annual Conference and
Jurisdiction have declared that we cannot
and will not abide by The Traditional
Plan. A host of other Annual
Conferences and a few Jurisdictions have
declared the same. We are in the pains of
impasse, and what we look like on the
other side remains to be seen. But we
believe that the Christ who welcomed tax
collectors, zealots, prostitutes, lepers, and
religious people alike is the Christ we will
continue to seek and serve, now and
always.

NoHo FUMC will host a reading of eleven
monologues, each based on the story of a
person who has experienced homelessness.
This event is a part of Homeward LA: a 10-
day citywide event where multiple productions
are performed all over Los Angeles, bringing
attention to the homeless crisis and raising
funds for The Midnight Mission, an amazing
nonprofit organization on Skid Row.
Our production will feature members of our
church as well as readers from the surrounding
community.
We will be collecting a donation of $20 per
person the night of the event. With hopes of
raising $2000 for The Midnight Mission.

6. Church Council will be gathering on Sunday
April 7th at 12:15 for a very important
meeting. Join us in Boyer Chapel after coffee
fellowship. Our congregation will be voting on
the status of our church as it regards how we
welcome all who would choose to attend
worship, be a member of our church or
participate in our community.
Under consideration will be a vote to officially
become a reconciling church on the rolls as a
congregation that openly and actively acts on
God’s word that we should be a faithful
people who invite all people to participate in
all aspects of worship and the life of the
church; specifically as it pertains to the
recognition of members of the LGBTQ+
community.
Join us for worship at 8:15 on Sunday Mornings
in Boyer Chapel.
Are you looking for more opportunities to
participate in worship, be in fellowship or
community with a small but mightily faithful
portion of our congregation? Are you an early
riser? Need to take communion before 10:30
AM on the first Sunday of the Month, because
you have to work?
Please consider joining us for worship in our
beautiful little Boyer Chapel. These early
services occur every Sunday (except Easter) at
8:15 AM. They include music, scripture
readings, time for prayer and reflection and
feature lessons and sermons delivered by a
rotating group of speakers. The first Sunday of
each month is Pastor Steve (the sacrament of
communion is served every first Sunday);
Norman Kelsey leads the second Sundays; Patty
Kelsey provides the message every third Sunday;
while, Sandra Smith leads worship on the fourth
and fifth Sundays. You will get unique
perspectives from each of them.
If you would like to lend your gifts and talents to
the 8:15 services, you are encouraged to contact
the Church office or any of the four listed above
directly. We would love to have scripture readers,
special music, liturgists; however you might be
called to participate.
Try it out. You might find that you enjoy both
Sunday services. See you bright and early!

7. At this time the North Hollywood Interfaith Food Pantry is in need of some non-food items for the
distribution site. We would be very grateful for donations made to assist in the Pantry's effort to help
those in need.
• Diapers in sizes 3,4 and 5
• Shampoo - can be small travel size or regular size bottles
• Soap
• Toothbrushes
• Tooth Paste
• Hand held can openers
•
If you have any of these items, please bring them to Temple Beth Hillel, 12326 Riverside Drive, just
like you have been bringing your donations of non-perishable food. From Riverside Drive, turn south
on Laurelgrove Avenue, turn right into the Temple parking lot. Simply advise the security person that
you have a donation for the Pantry. Park behind the Temple lobby where you see the large plate glass
window. Enter the lobby and put your donation in the large wooden box beside the window.
As a reminder, please do not bring any clothing to Temple Beth Hillel or the Pantry distribution site.
The Pantry does not distribute clothing and does not have a place to store clothing.

Early Response Teams (ERTs) to fill specific needs in the early days after a disaster, such as cleaning
out flood-damaged homes, removing debris, placing tarps on homes and otherwise helping to
prevent further damage, while providing a caring Christian presence. To be eligible for an ERT
team, participants must take the 8 hour Basic Class ERT. After completion, participants will receive
an ERT identification card which is valid for three years. A Renewal Class of 4 hours is required
every 3 years. A background check (conducted through UMCOR's Verified Volunteers program) is
required in order to receive an ERT identification card and participate on a team.
The course will equip volunteers to minister in early response conditions, stabilizing damage to
homes and being a caring presence for survivors. The instructor for this class is Ken Ellis.
Additional Materials: Participants owning a laptop or WiFi-enabled tablet are encouraged to
bring one, in order to efficiently process paperwork related to certification.
Cal-Pac requires this training for all volunteers, whether United Methodist or not, who wish to apply for a team to
Saipan, under the FEMA Invitational to work with survivors from Super Typhoon Yutu.

9. We have had a number of people from not only our area, but from other parts of the country, as
well as around the world tuning in to watch our service live thru our Facebook page. Of course,
respecting the privacy of our congregation we are limiting the on camera area to the front of the
church. If you have someone watching the feed such as family in another part of the country and
would like them to see you on camera please sit in the first 2 rows and let me know if you would
like to be seen.
The full service can be seen on the Facebook page by clicking on the videos link later and an
edited version with the date and sermon title can be seen on our YouTube page. You can subscribe
to the YouTube page to get notification, when we post new videos to our page. We post 2 videos
per week. The full service as well as Pastor Steve’s Message for the Week.
These short videos give a sneak peek into what Pastor Steve will be preaching on the next Sunday
and usually post on Thursday afternoons. All the past “Message for the Week’s” videos are
available to watch on YouTube as well, reaching back about 2 years. We also post an audio only
version of the service to our Podbean page. You can find links to our Podbean, YouTube, Facebook
and other social media pages at the bottom of our new website, www.nohofumc.org as well as the
monthly calendar, our online give page as well as many other things.
Also, please see Tonya if you have a few minutes after the service, during coffee hour on Sundays
and would be able to give a quick word on camera about what your favorite things are about
NoHoFUMC. What brought you here and why you stay. We would like to put these videos on our
YouTube page so that new visitors can get a feel for our church and hopefully come and visit. It’s a
great way to reach out and share why we love NoHoFUMC.

We are super excited to let you know that we have been
back live streaming the service on Facebook for a month
now!
We were having some trouble with the streaming software,
but have worked it out and are happy to report all is going
smoothly once again, so spread the word to family and
friends who can’t make it to the service that they can

• Trisha Morales is having unexplained seizures.
• Lisa Cheby’s friend, Elva, fell and bruised her ribcage. Lisa
is concerned for her overall health.
• Annabelle Peat is having issues with her ears. She has been
sent to a specialist.
• Uma Tokahuta needs prayers of strength and motivation.
• Mildred Doyel is recuperating after breaking her hip for the second time.
• Sherri Perry’s Aunt, Sandra, has been under hospice care but has shown some improvement
with her speech.
• Kathi Ellis has been doing well at Burbank Rehab and hopes to get back to church soon.
• Bill Varney ended up with an infection in his blood and was admitted to the hospital. No
updates have been received at this time.
• Catie Andrus’ Mom, Judy, is undergoing treatment for her 3rd round of ovarian cancer.
• Tracy Hagan has remained hope-filled even with living with the discomfort of living with
adenoid cancer. She feels closer to God and is maintaining peace in her heart.
• Bryant Tokahuta has recuperated very well after his kidney surgery!
• Eric Anderson’s pancreatic cancer returned. No updates at this time.
• David Vail has metastatic bladder cancer and has been undergoing new treatments. He
continues to swim in the senior league in his hometown and is in good spirits.
• Prayers for those detained in detention centers.
• Prayers for our UMC and for our church as we move forward.
• Prayers for Pastor Steve as we enter the High Holy Season. Keep him healthy!
• Prayers for our world and the leaders of all nations.
