My Siblings in Christ,
I found my heart strangely warmed on May 23, 2021, as we gathered for
worship in the Fountain Courtyard of our church. Nervous about being
together in a large group, anxious about all the preparations that we
haven’t had to do in over a year, and painfully conscious of the ever-
changing protocols put forth by the CDC and the Annual Conference, it
felt so good to worship as congregation!
As we move into June, we will continue to worship out in the courtyard for
the next few Sundays so we can enjoy receiving communion together and
we can continue to sing together (albeit still masked for the time being).
Before too long, we will be back in the sanctuary and life will start to feel
more and more normal with each passing week.
But just what do we mean when we say “normal”? We learned many
lessons in the pandemic, and to be quite frank, there are some lessons I
don’t want to forget. Simon Sinek, a highly sought expert of
organizational leadership, says, “Normal dies every year.” His point is
simple: what we consider “normal” is constantly changing, and the
moment our lives seek to control and maintain “normal”, we begin to
diminish. Either normal dies or we die.
One of the lectionary scriptures in June contains an interesting thought. It
says, “So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has
passed away; see, everything has become new!” (2 Corinthians 5:17,
NRSV)
We are not the same church that entered the pandemic. We have picked
up people who have been tuning in from afar. We have lost people to
moves. We have learned to think of ourselves in virtual and in-person
communities. We have learned in a powerful way that the church is not a
building.
So what next? How will we become the church the community around us
needs to find identity, purpose, direction, and community in? How will we
be witnesses and ambassadors of Christ in the community around us? It is
time to dream and it is time to move. We are not the same church…we are
a new creation.
In Christ,
Pastor Steve
2. Sermon Series: “The Future of Faith”
A German theologian in the 20th century proclaimed that “God dwells in the future.” In his
thought, God knows how all this will end, and our relationship with God is driven by the work
required to get humanity to the place in the future God desires it to be. Over the next few
weeks, we will be exploring how faith is calling on us to look into the future and shape our
actions and decisions.

“Time to Step Forward”
Isaiah, in a vivid vision of God in heaven, hears the call of God for a messenger. Even though he knows
he is not a member of the heavenly host, Isaiah steps forward and says, “Send me.”

“Faith in the Future”
2 Corinthians 4:13-5:1
Paul and the early church endured many hardships…and they persisted because of their faith that God
will have the final say. How firmly do we believe that God holds the future?
June 13
“New Perspectives; New Creations” 2 Corinthians 5:6-17
A compass helps explore and navigate the wilderness, even when they have never been in a place. Faith
helps us navigate this new life, we in Christ and guides to the points of new perspective.

“Going to the Other Side”
Jesus intentionally takes the disciples across the Sea of Galilee to a pagan place. Along the way, they
encounter a storm which makes them fear for their lives…sometimes you have to go to places you don’t
think God is in order to see that God is everywhere…
June 27
“A Desperate Faith”
Two people, a synagogue leader and a hemorrhaging woman, seek out Jesus in desperation: he is their
last resort. Sometimes you have to get to the end of your rope in order to see the power of God…

3. We are so happy to congratulate, two of our church family members, who graduated this month!
(L.) Jonash Poyaoan received a Bachelor’s of Science in Biology from UC Santa Cruz.
(R.) Dianne Lake completed her law studies at Yale.
May God bless them and keep them on their journeys as they go forward, to shine their light and
utilize their brilliant gifts in the world and in their new professions.
5. Dear North District Family,
We have been blessed with Jim Powell’s faithful, innovative and pastoral leadership for six years. His
tenure as our North District Superintendent is ending and we wish to express our appreciation and good
wishes as he transitions to his new appointment as pastor of St. Matthew’s UMC in Newbury Park.
The Superintendency Committee arranged for a Zoom Appreciation event on Monday, May 24 at 10
am. There were creative presentations, and many people shared stories and comments.
We have also created a “kudoboard” for Pastor Jim. It is a place where you can leave notes, pictures and
videos. If you have pictures of Jim visiting your church, please upload them to the site. If you could not
participate in the live zoom event and have a brief story you would like to share, you could record it and
upload it to the Kudoboard.
The link for Jim Powell’s Kudoboard is: https://www.kudoboard.com/boards/Z1m9To9q
May we also suggest the following ideas if you want to give a Gift of Appreciation to Pastor Jim:
• Make a donation in his honor to the Abolition Task Force to End Human Trafficking or another
ministry of your choosing.
• Send a card, post on Kudoboard.
• Send a personal Gift of Appreciation directly to Pastor Jim, c/o Cal-Pac Conference, PO Box 6006,
Pasadena, CA 91102-6006.
I hope we will all be able to participate in some way to give Pastor Jim a good send-off from the North
District.
Rich Bolin
Chairperson, Superintendency Committee
6. Dear Friend of the Mission,
As many of you are aware, in 2020, besides the
Navigation Center and Job Center, Hope of the
Valley opened an 85-bed shelter in North Hollywood
and a 100-bed shelter in Van Nuys.
So far this year, in partnership with the City of Los
Angeles, Hope of the Valley has opened a 39 unit/75
bed Tiny Home Community on Chandler Blvd. and
a 103 unit/200 bed Tiny Home Site at Alexandria
Park.
It is with great excitement and anticipation that we now announce the grand opening of the Reseda Cabin
Community (Tiny Homes). This site, located next to the West Valley Police Station, on Vanowen and
Vanalden, will have 52 Tiny Homes and 100 beds. Special thanks to Councilman Bob Blumenfield, his staff
and The City of Los Angeles for initiating and building this amazing location.
As we prepare to Shelter many of our unhoused neighbors in the West Valley, once again, we need the
support of our donors and friends! Due to enhanced onsite services, there is an operational funding gap,
thus I am reaching out to you for support. We need blankets, pillows, sheets, hygiene products and other
supplies. We need to raise an additional $30,000 in start up costs. Please give what you can today!
In 2021, Hope of the Valley will more than double in size, services and impact. Thank you for believing in
and supporting our efforts. YOU are essential to our ongoing success. The Homeless Crisis is real, and we
are doing everything within our power to address the cause and cure. Together, we are working to MAKE
HOMELESS HISTORY!
With Eternal Gratitude, Ken Craft, Founder & CEO
