UTILIZATION OF ELECTRICAL ENERGY
Electrical And Electronics Engineering
Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 80
Answer any FIVE Questions
All Questions carry equal marks
1. A machine shop 30m × 15m is to have an illumination of 150 lux on working plane.
The lamps are mounted 5m above the working plane. Give the layout of a suitable
installation:
(a) Using filament lamp
(b) Using 80watt fluorescent lamps. Assume suitable data? [16]
2. Discuss in detail the various categories of light fittings employed for indoor lighting,
describing the application of each type. [16]
3. (a) Describe direct and indirect core type furnace with neat sketches.
(b) A low frequency induction furnace whose secondary voltage is maintained
constant at 10volts, takes 400 kw at 0.6 pf, when the hearth is full. Assuming
the resistance of the secondary circuit to vary inversely as the height of the
charge and reactance to remain constant, find height up to which the hearth
should be filled to obtain maximum heat. [8+8]
4. Discuss the characteristic features of a traction motor for effective traction systems.
[16]
5. Write short notes on the following:
(a) Resistance welding
(b) Arc welding
(c) Welding transformer characteristics
(d) Advantages of coated electrodes in welding process. [4+4+4+4]
6. With the help of Speed-Time curve, Define and explain the importance following
factors in a traction system:
(a) Notching period
(b) Accelerating period
(c) Free running period
(d) Coasting period
(e) Braking period. [16]

7. A goods train weighing 300 tonnes is to be hauled by a locomotive up a gradient
of 2% with an acceleration of 1kmphps. Coefficient of adhesion is 20%. Track
resistance=45 W/Ton and effect of rotational masses is 15% of dead weight. If axle
load is not to exceed by 20 tonnes, determine the weight of locomotive and number
of axles. [16]
8. (a) Derive the relation between the temperature of a motor at a particular time
during operation and final temperature.
(b) What do you understand by load equalization? [8+8]

(b) A low frequency induction furnace whose secondary voltage is maintained constant at 10volts, takes 400 kw at 0.6 pf, when the hearth is full. Assuming the resistance of the secondary circuit to vary inversely as the height of the charge and reactance to remain constant, find height up to which the hearth should be filled to obtain maximum heat. [8+8] 3. (a) Derive the relation between the temperature of a motor at a particular time during operation and final temperature. (b) What do you understand by load equalization? [8+8] 4. A machine shop 30m × 15m is to have an illumination of 150 lux on working plane. The lamps are mounted 5m above the working plane. Give the layout of a suitable installation: (a) Using filament lamp (b) Using 80watt fluorescent lamps. Assume suitable data? [16] 5. Write short notes on the following: (a) Resistance welding (b) Arc welding (c) Welding transformer characteristics (d) Advantages of coated electrodes in welding process. [4+4+4+4] 6. A goods train weighing 300 tonnes is to be hauled by a locomotive up a gradient of 2% with an acceleration of 1kmphps. Coefficient of adhesion is 20%. Track resistance=45 W/Ton and effect of rotational masses is 15% of dead weight. If axle load is not to exceed by 20 tonnes, determine the weight of locomotive and number of axles. [16] 7. Discuss in detail the various categories of light fittings employed for indoor lighting, describing the application of each type. [16] 8. With the help of Speed-Time curve, Define and explain the importance following factors in a traction system: 3
