application, such as MS Word
• Avoid using any pre-formatted resume
writing packages or wizards
• Use standard fonts and avoid decorative
graphics or formatting
• Find out if the employer prefers the cover
letter and resume sent within the text of the
email or sent separately as an attachment
• Have an additional hard copy version of
your resume (enhanced layout and
formatting) to bring the interview
• Save your documents under your first and
last name instead of just resume.

Electronic Resume

15. Broomfield WFC Job Club
Electronic scanning systems search for “key
words” that match you to the job. If you don’t
include the “key words” they use to search
resumes, the hiring person will not even see
your resume. Be sure to target your resume to
the job description and use their words.
Scannable Resumes
16. Broomfield WFC Job Club
• Always send an original
• Bold face and/or all capital letters for section headings
• Condensing space hinders scanning
• Do not fold or staple
• Each phone number on its own line
• Fancy treatment like italics should be avoided
• Graphics should not be used
• Horizontal lines should never be used
• Increase your list of key words by including specifics
• Jargons and acronyms that are specific to your field
• Keep date ranges on one line
• Large font sizes should always be avoided
• Miscellaneous items such as activities&honors should be listed
• Newspaper/Newsletter format should be avoided
Scannable Resume Facts and Tips From A to Z
17. Broomfield WFC Job Club
• Objectives (career) are important to emphasize
• Place your name at the top on one line
• Qualifications should always be emphasized
• References should be listed on separate sheet of paper with the
same heading as the resume
• Submit a current resume if it has been over one year and you are
still interested in working with this employer
• Typeface such as Times, Arial and Courier are appropriate
• Use font size 10 – 14 point
• Vertical lines should never be used
• White paper is the best choice
• Xeroxed printouts should never be submitted
• Year is the length of time your resume will remain active in
someone system
• Zenith is the highest point that a person can reach. Step one to

On Line Applications
Be prepared with general answers. Prepare a
practice hand written employment application
first.
Do not take breaks. Many employers will not
accept applications that take a long time.
Some have tests. Allocate one hour or more for
completing an on line application.
Have an e-mail address. (Make sure your e-mail
address is professional.)
