blog summary: http://www.k4t3.org/2010/12/02/the-philosophy-of-facebook/
6. "Facebook intends to improve the flow and quality of information shared between people, to actually improve communication and relationships. Facebook wants to broadly improve a fundamental human activity - and why not?" Karel Baloun ( Inside Facebook ) ) )
8. “ I think we take it for granted that four years ago when Facebook was getting started, most people didn’t want to put any information about themselves on the internet, right? So we got people through this really big hurdle of not wanting to put up their full name, or real picture, mobile phone number, connections to real people...” Mark Zuckerberg ( Web 2.0 Summit , 2008) , 2008) , 2008)
9. "Zuckerberg believes that Facebook is truly making the world better." Sarah Lacy ( Once You’re Lucky, Twice You’re Good ) ) )
21. “ In the 2000s, companies like Facebook create the space for new modes of dissent and new ways to form communities not bounded by historical nation-states. By starting a new Internet business, an entrepreneur may create a new world. The hope of the Internet is that these new worlds will impact and force change on the existing social and political order.” Peter Thiel ( Cato Unbound , 2009)
it’s not about women, it’s not about getting into final club
also scary that this isn’t official - hidden inside a sweatshirtcode for less privacy
goal is to actually make us more transparent - michael zimmer quote from zuckerberg
michael zimmer talked about this yesterday as well
put simply, zuckerberg wants to change the world and he’s trying to do it through facebook.
fred turner's book
describe more - kevin kelly’s examples
specific outcomes manifest in facebook default is open rather than private binaries: like button, i like/dont like friend/not friend efficient rather than deep
strongly connected with the merging of the atomic and the digital is how facebook works at its core level and this is all accomplished through the conversion of the physical, ephemeral world into a system that can be managed, mined, organized and aggregated.
If we understand privacy in this way,as social, we see how the cybernetic way of thinking - that is its beliefs about the way the world should be - are reflected in Facebook’s design and thus the consequences for users
If we understand privacy in this way,as social, we see how the cybernetic way of thinking - that is its beliefs about the way the world should be - are reflected in Facebook’s design and thus the consequences for users
and this is all perfectly in line with the philosophy behind facebook. the legacy of the californian ideology has also left us with the belief that we will be empowered by truly free markets and radical individualism over community. so this commodification of privacy and identity is just a natural extension of this. facebook is just giving consumers what they want. if you dont like it, don’t use it. you are empowered as an individual to make that choice
peter thiel and Facebook’s cybernetic connection, founding of paypal to overcome international money transfer laws. 'the social network' glosses over thiel as well
it's not that facebook doesn't care about privacy, it's that facebook cares about making the world more open and transparent. and that is in direct opposition to privacy
Conclusion - understanding this ideology gives us a clearer picture zuckerberg’s motivations and thus why Facebook is designed the way that it is. For those trying to protect privacy, understanding this is key. and i think this ideological drive is more scary than money- more personal, more emotional, more important
