3. History Of The 29 Bypass
1979
− Project was proposed
− Project wasn't started till 1984
VDOT began acquisition property
− From 1991-2001
− Owns 36 properties
1998
− a lawsuit was filed
− Challenged the environmental impact of the project
− VDOT won but they were required to make a SEIS

1996
− Charlottesville-Albemarle Metropolitan Planning
Organization cuts funding
− By 2011 the funding was returned
Present Day
− VDOT is re-examining the work they will need to do to push
forward with the bypass

The bypass posses a threat to our local communities
− Colthurst subdivision
− Montvue subdivision
− Squirrel Ridge subdivision
The bypass posses a threat to 4 major schools
− Albemarle High, Jack Jouett Middle, Mary Carr Greer
Elementry, and Saint Anne's-Belfield private school.
− Academically and Health
The bypass will effect stores
− Local and corporate businesses along the current 29 north
corridor

County Board of Supervisors
− Made up of 6 members
− There was a tie then a party shift
− Party mentality
Citizens of Charlottesville
− Most disagree with the bypass
− Will effect the communities, the students, and the
businesses
Outside Businesses
− Trucking, and manufacturing
− Lynchburg, Danville, etc.
8. Findings and Personal Opinion
Two camps
− Board of Supervisors who are democrats and
the citizens of Charlottesville
− Board of Supervisors who are republican and
outside of Charlottesville businesses
Personal Opinion
− Find a middle ground
− Propose that the bypass be moved farther
down Route 29 towards Lynchburg
