1. A hunter encountered a monk on his way to hunt and believed it was a bad omen. He did not catch anything that day.
2. In anger, he set his dogs on the monk who climbed a tree. The hunter injured the monk, causing his robes to fall on the hunter below, and the dogs attacked and killed the hunter, mistaking him for the monk.
3. The monk felt guilt and remorse, but the Buddha reassured him that he bore no responsibility or bad karma, as the hunter had committed wrong against the innocent monk. The monk was relieved of his feelings of guilt.

While residing at the Jetavana Monastery,
the Buddha spoke Verse 125 of The
Dhammapada, with reference to Koka the
huntsman.
One morning, as Koka was going out to hunt
with his pack of hounds, he met a monk
entering the city for alms food.
He took that as a bad omen and grumbled to
himself, “Since I have seen this wretched one,
I don’t think I would get anything today,”
and he went on his way.
佛陀住在 Jetavana 寺时,讲了《法句
经》第 125 颂,并提到了猎人甲卡。一
天早晨,甲贺带着他的猎犬外出打猎,
遇到一位僧人进城托钵。 他以为这是不
祥之兆,自言自语道:“既见此贱人,

As expected by him, he did not
get anything. On his way home
also, he saw the same monk
returning to the monastery, and
the hunter became very angry. So
he set his hounds on the monk.
Swiftly, the monk climbed up a
tree to a level just out of reach of
the hounds.
不出他所料,他什么也没得到。 在回
家的路上,他也看到了同一个僧人回
到寺院,猎人非常生气。 于是他就放
猎狗去追和尚。 和尚迅速爬上一棵树,
爬到猎犬够不到的高度。

Then the hunter went to the
foot of the tree and pricked
the heels of the monk with the
tip of his arrow. The monk
was in great pain and was not
able to hold his robes on;
so the robes slipped off his
body on to the hunter who
was at the foot of the tree.
猎人走到树下,用箭尖刺了和尚
的脚后跟。 和尚痛苦万分,无法
抓住他的袈裟。所以长袍从他身
上滑落到树脚下的猎人身上。

The dogs seeing the yellow robe
thought that the monk had fallen
off the tree and pounced on the
body, biting and pulling at it
furiously. The monk, from his
shelter in the tree, broke a dry
branch and threw it at the dogs.
Then the dogs discovered that
they had been attacking their own
master instead of the monk, and
ran away into the forest.
狗见黄袍,以为和尚从树上掉下来,
扑到尸体上,狂撕乱咬。 和尚从他躲
在树上的地方折断一根干树枝,扔向
狗。 然后狗们发现他们一直在攻击他
们自己的主人而不是僧侣,就跑进了
森林。

The monk came down from
the tree and found that the
hunter had died and felt
sorry for him. He also
wondered whether he could
be held responsible for the
death, since the hunter had
died for having been covered
up by his yellow robes.

知道他是否应该对死亡负责,
因为猎人是因为被他的黄色长

Feelings of Regret, Remorse and Guilt

“Did I cause the death of the hunter?”
“Will I bear the bad kamma?”

So, he went to the Buddha to clear up his
doubts. The Buddha said, “My son, rest
assured and have no doubt; you are not
responsible for the death of the hunter; your
morality (sila) is also not soiled on account of
that death. Indeed, that huntsman did a great
wrong to one to whom he should do no wrong,
and so had come to this grievous end.”
于是,他去找佛陀解惑。 佛陀说:“我的孩子,
放心,不要怀疑; 你不对猎人的死亡负责; 你
的戒 (sila) 也不会因为那次死亡而受到玷污。
的确,那个猎人对他不该对的人犯了大错,所以
才会落得如此悲惨的下场。”
The monk was most happy and relieved to
hear Buddha’s words. He was freed from any
feelings of remorse and guilt. There was no
bad kamma because there was no intention to
harm or kill.
和尚听了佛陀的话,非常高兴,如释重负。
他没有任何悔恨和内疚的感觉。 没有恶业,
因为没有伤害或杀戮的意图。
The good cultivated monk back with
his fellow brother monks.
好修行的和尚和他的同胞兄弟回来了。

Who offends the inoffensive,
the innocent and blameless one,
upon that fool does evil fall
as fine dust flung
against the wind

If one wrongs a person who should not be wronged, one who is
pure and is free from moral defilements, namely an arahat, the evil
falls back upon that fool, like fine dust thrown against the wind.

Explanatory Translation of Dhammapada Verse 125
If an ignorant person were to become harsh and crude towards a person who
is without blemishes, pure, and is untouched by corruption, that sinful act will
return to the evil-doer. It is very much like the fine dust thrown against the
wind. The dust will return to the thrower.
