Renewable vs. Non-renewable Energy,[object Object],Unit 27,[object Object]
What Does Energy Mean to Us?,[object Object],When you hear politicians and scientists say things like “energy consumption” or “energy independence” what does that really mean?,[object Object]
Energy Use,[object Object],Energy is generally divided into two main types:,[object Object],Electricity Production,[object Object],and,[object Object],Transportation,[object Object]
Non-renewable Energy,[object Object],Non-renewable means that the supply can not be replenished. ,[object Object],Once it runs out, it is gone forever.,[object Object],Fossil Fuels are the most common form of non-renewable energy.,[object Object]
Examples of Fossil Fuels,[object Object],Coal- Ancient swamps that were buried by sediments. Primarily containing peat moss and other vegetation.,[object Object],Petroleum (Oil)- Primarily algae and plankton that sink to the bottom of the sea and are buried by sediments.,[object Object],Natural Gas- Primarily algae that sink to the bottom of the sea are buried by sediments.,[object Object],They are called fossil fuels because they are the remains of organisms that lived millions of years ago.,[object Object]
Uses of Fossil Fuels,[object Object],[object Object]
Used in the steel industry to melt iron
Oil- Used to produce gasoline and diesel.
Used as lubricants, like motor oil.
Used to make plastics and asphalt
Natural Gas- Use to generate electricity
Used to heat homes
Used as an alternative fuel for vehicles,[object Object]
Coal,[object Object]
Coal,[object Object],Coal smoke is one of the largest contributors to air pollution and smog.,[object Object],Prior to more modern smoke cleaning technology, coal soot layers coated city buildings and trees.,[object Object]
Coal Power Plant,[object Object],Coal is burned,[object Object],It heats up water to turn it to steam,[object Object],The rising steam turns turbines which generate electricity,[object Object]
Smog,[object Object],Smog is produced by chemicals released by coal powerplants and automobiles.,[object Object],Here is Beijing, China,[object Object],The left image is a “sunny” day with thick smog and on right image is after a rainstorm washed it all out.,[object Object]
Petroleum (Oil),[object Object],Oil is a thick, black liquid formed from the buried remains of microscopic marine organisms.,[object Object],It is generally trapped under layers of rock and has to be pumped out.,[object Object],But, there are a few spots where it can find its way to the surface.,[object Object]
Oil Wells,[object Object],First you drill down to find a deposit,[object Object],Then you use a oil rig to pump it up,[object Object]
Uses of Oil,[object Object],Oil is converted into many products we use everyday, including gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, lubricants, plastics, among others.,[object Object],Oil represents more than 90% of the transportation energy used today.,[object Object],61% of oil is used for transportation,[object Object]
Oil Refining,[object Object],Oil can be heated and separated into its different components,[object Object]
Diesel Fuel,[object Object],It is used for hauling goods.,[object Object],Trucks, Ships, and Railways use Diesel,[object Object]
Natural Gas,[object Object],It is primarily methane,[object Object],It is used to produce 20% of our electricity,[object Object],It is cleaner burning than coal,[object Object],It is used to heat homes.,[object Object]
Other Uses of Natural Gas,[object Object],The chemical reaction of natural gas is very simple.,[object Object],CH4 + O2 CO2 + H2O,[object Object]
Problems with Fossil Fuels,[object Object],All Fossil Fuels release Carbon Dioxide gas when burned which causes global warming.,[object Object],Burning coal and oil produces toxic pollutants that result in smog, air pollution, lung diseases, and acid rain.,[object Object],Our Fossil Fuels will run out soon, thus we need alternatives!,[object Object]
Renewable Resources,[object Object],These are sources of energy that naturally regenerate themselves.,[object Object],Wind,[object Object],Solar,[object Object],Hydroelectricity,[object Object],Biofuels,[object Object],Geothermal,[object Object],Tidal/Wave Energy,[object Object]
Energy from Wind,[object Object],Wind energy comes from wind turning turbines to generate electricity.,[object Object],It can only be used in regions that have a lot of wind.,[object Object],It is the fastest growing source of alternative energy today.,[object Object],Currently, about 2% of electricity in U.S. is from wind. But, it is over 20% in Denmark!,[object Object]
Wind Farm,[object Object]
Advantages: Wind energy is nonpolluting,[object Object],Disadvantages: ,[object Object],Not all places are windy enough,[object Object],Sometimes the wind slows or stops,[object Object],It can kill birds in migratory paths,[object Object]
Solar Energy,[object Object],There are two ways to generate electricity from the sun.,[object Object],Photovoltaic cells,[object Object],Solar thermal energy,[object Object]
Solar cells,[object Object],[object Object]
Some systems have the ability to rotate to follow the sun through the day,[object Object]
Passive Solar Heating,[object Object],Sunlight can be used to save energy without even generating electricity,[object Object]
Solar Energy,[object Object],Solar energy can save money by heating or lighting buildings passively.,[object Object],Solar energy can heat water, saving energy needed for water heaters.,[object Object],Solar energy can generate electricity,[object Object],Solar produces no pollution,[object Object]
Disadvantages of Solar energy,[object Object],It does not work well on cloudy days,[object Object],It does not work at night.,[object Object],It is less effective the further north you go,[object Object],It is difficult to store large amounts of energy in batteries,[object Object]
Hydroelectricity,[object Object],Dams hold large amounts of water back. ,[object Object],Water flowing through forces turbines to spin and create electricity.,[object Object]
Run of the River Dam,[object Object],Uses force of the river to push turbines,[object Object]
Gravity Dams,[object Object],Creates a vertical displacement and water is dropped onto the turbines,[object Object]
Hydroelectricity,[object Object],Generates about 20% of electricity in U.S.,[object Object],No pollution and is renewable.,[object Object],But, causes environmental damage.,[object Object],It floods lands, alters rivers temperature and character and can kill fish species,[object Object]
Tidal and Wave Energy,[object Object],In the early stages of development,[object Object],Moving water can spin turbines and generate electricity,[object Object]
Biofuels,[object Object],Using crop waste, leaves, and wood products to generate fuel.,[object Object],Renewable because you can always grow more.,[object Object],Still produces carbon dioxide when burned.,[object Object]
