Despite a small number, Pakistanis have made significant contributions to Education, Government, Utilities, Infrastructure, Information Technology and Corporate sectors Regarded as hard working and law-abiding people About 10,000 Pakistanis living in New Zealand (0.2% of the total population) 90% live in North Island and 10% in South Island Predominantly Muslims Median age is 26 years with 25% born in New Zealand and 75% born overseas Located in almost all the major cities and towns of New Zealand, including Auckland (70%), Wellington (8%), Palmerston North (8%), Hamilton (5%), Christchurch (5%) and Dunedin (1%) Represented by Pakistani Community and Student Associations in major cities and universities
  3. Despite a small number , Pakistanis have made significant contributions to: Health, Education, Government, Utilities, Infrastructure, Information Technology and Corporate sectors A number of doctors, engineers, Accountants and other senior professionals Regarded as hard working and law-abiding people
  4. Many Pakistanis in NZ call NZ their second home. - Safety for your family, especially school going kids is a critical factor for not just Pakistanis but many other nationalities immigrating to new Zealand. - Ease of access to law and justice and overall law n order in the country – obviously thanks to our NZ Police for keeping the streets safe. NZ attracts a number of PhD students Within technology sector, there are some niche areas where NZ is attracting global talent NZ government offers a lot of opportunity for new migrants to successfully integrate into the society Due to increasing diversity of NZ population – generally people are very tolerant of other cultures & religion. Stating the obvious – very fortunate to … especially for those who come from large cities. Pakistanis mainly come to New Zealand to study, to work, or for a better lifestyle There is a smaller group who are migrated to find peace for their families and these are not refugees Some people bring difficult experiences with them including the stress they have endured through living under the social, financial and safety concerns
  5. Increasing trends – shows people taking interest in NZ influenced by the factors mentioned in the previous slide. And then we can see the change of trend here due to change in immigration laws.
  6. Language barrier Speaking and understanding English is not a regular practice in Pakistan. For some Pakistanis it can be difficult to express views or ideas seamlessly in English Fitting in the local communities Some Pakistanis initially feel like an outsider, particularly students feel alone and take some time to fit in Cultural misunderstanding: Some Pakistanis initially struggle to understand New Zealand’s trust based culture and level of openness Egalitarian society, flat hierarchies strong values for speaking the truth, quality of life/ vs prestige. Weak support system Mainly rely on their own or some close friends, unlike Pakistan where they have their parents, siblings and other close relatives Gender specific challenges Some female members find it difficult to integrate in the New Zealand society due to social and cultural background Other challenges, not unique to Pakistanis are – Housing, Education recognition and re-establishing themselves in the workforce.

  8. Police is one of three components of the criminal justice system in Pakistan – alongside courts and prisons. The police in Pakistan are a decentralised model. The police operate through the four provincial governments and the Islamabad capital territory. Police Service of Pakistan officer - disparity Each police service has a jurisdiction extending only within the relevant province A most thank-less job in Paksitan. They have lost more than 4,000 lives either fighting against terrorism The origins of abusive police behavior are rooted in Pakistan’s colonial past. Police in half the country’s provinces still operate under an 1861 police law enacted following a major insurrection against British rule in 1857.
