Containers have recently grown in interest in the virtualization community because they are a lightweight alternative to full machine virtualization. Containers offer an operating system level virtualization, where the kernel controls the isolation of the different containers. That means less isolation than virtual machines, but also less overhead in the system because they share parts of the kernel. The most important developments in the Open Source community are LXC and Docker. ONEDock is a set of extensions for OpenNebula to use Docker as a hypervisor in ONE, to provide containers as if they were lightweight Virtual Machines (VM). The underlying idea is that when OpenNebula is asked for a VM, a Docker container will be deployed instead. In the context of OpenNebula, it is managed as if it was a VM, and the user will be able to use IP addresses to access to the container. In this session we will learn about the integration of Docker and ONE, wich kind of the available features in ONE have been incorporated to the Docker containers, and how the operations on VMs are translated to the containers in the context of ONE. Moreover we will discuss some technical details and technical decissions taken in ONEDock, and how the other operations (that have not been implemented yet) will be integrated in ONEDock.

Hybrid functionality enables a private cloud administrator to outsource the cloud workload -read, the cloud VMs- to an external public cloud provider. OpenNebula approach to hybrid cloud is quite unique, in this talk we will explain how transparency for the user is achieved, and what tools OpenNebula gives to the administrator to build a fully functional hybrid cloud. Moreover, in this talk we will introduce the support for two new public cloud providers, available from OpenNebula 4.8. Before this release, integration with AWS was the default in OpenNebula, but now you can build clouds that expand to IBM SoftLayer and Microsoft Azure as well.

In addition to providing bare-metal access to large amounts of compute FAS Research Computing (FASRC) at Harvard also builds and fully maintains custom virtual machines tailored to faculty and researchers needs including lab websites, portals, databases, project development environments, and more both locally and on public clouds. Recently FASRC converted its internal VM infrastructure from a completely home-made KVM cluster to a more robust and reliable system powered by OpenNebula and Ceph configured with public cloud integration. Over the years as the number of VMs grew our home-made solution started to show signs of wear and tear with respect to scheduling, provisioning, management, inventory, and performance. Our new deployment improves on all of these areas and provides APIs and features that both help us serve clients more efficiently and improve our internal processes for testing new system configurations and dynamically spinning up resources for continous integration and deployment. Our new VM infrastructure deployment is fully automated via puppet and has been used to provision a multi-datacenter, fault-tolerant, VM infrastructure with a multi-tiered back-up system and robust VM and virtual disk monitoring. We will describe our internal system architecture and deployment, challenges we faced, and innovations we made along the way while deploying OpenNebula and Ceph. We will also discuss a new client-facing OpenNebula cloud deployment we’re currently beta testing with select users where users have full control over the creation and configuration of their VMs on FASRC compute resources via the OpenNebula dashboard and APIs.

Do you remember Vagrant? It was that last hipster thing before Docker turned into the most recent hipster thing! It's also still really helpful for software evaluations or lab environments. Normally, it works with VirtualBox on your laptop, but this approach can be too limiting. Even running just 10 VMs becomes a stretch on a laptop. It burns through your battery, SSD lifetime, disk space and threatens how many dozen browser tabs you can open... Enter the Vagrant OpenNebula providers! You can actually control Vagrant on your workstation but have the VMs running on your cloud. There are multiple ways to do that, and also limitations. In the workshop, we'll look at what is possible and how you can best benefit from - oh right! - your cloud!

Today we gave a talk at Future Internet Assembly 2014. Its aim was to show how OpenNebula is driving innovation in cloud computing, impacting the adoption of private cloud, and enabling business in the cloud. First, most organizations adopt cloud to optimize their IT investment, to improve existing services or to support new business and service models. In this scenario, OpenNebula lowers the barriers for new organizations to build their private cloud. Second, many organizations like the fact that open source allows great customization to meet individual requirements. They can build a differentiated cloud service to meet customers needs or to offer new cloud provision models for a specific market segment or geography. Third, open-source also encourages and supports innovation in the development of new cloud products. We have seen many examples of how its use lowers the barriers for new ICT players to create their own cloud offerings.

During these years we’ve witnessed the rise and hype of the Cloud, the birth and decline of several virtualization technologies, but specially the encouraging and exciting growth of OpenNebula; both as a technology and as an active and engaged community. As a meeting point for OpenNebula users, developers, administrators, builders, integrators and researchers, this Conference represents an opportunity to look back at how the project has grown in the last six years, and to give a peek at what to expect from the project in the near future. Bio: Ignacio M. Llorente, Ph.D and MBA, is Director of the OpenNebula Project and CEO & co-founder at C12G Labs. He is an entrepreneur and researcher in the field of cloud and distributed computing, having managed several international projects and initiatives on Cloud Computing, and authored many articles in the leading journals and proceedings books. Dr. Llorente is one of the pioneers and world’s leading authorities on Cloud Computing, having held several appointments as independent expert and consultant for the European Commission and several companies and national governments. Llorente holds a Ph.D in Computer Science (UCM) and an Executive MBA (IE Business School), and is also a Full Professor at UCM.

Computer networks are undergoing a phenomenal growth, driven by the rapidly increasing number of nodes constituting the networks. At the same time, the number of security threats on Internet and intranet networks is constantly increasing, and the testing and experimentation of cyber defense solutions require the availability of separate, test environments that best reflect the complexity of a real system. Such environments support the deployment and monitoring of complex mission-driven network scenarios, and cyber security training activities, thus enabling enterprises to study cyber defense strategies and allowing security researchers to evaluate their algorithms at scale. The main objective is delivering to researchers and practitioners an overview of the technological means and the practical steps to setup a private cloud platform based on OpenNebula for the creation and management of virtual environments that support cyber-security activities of training and testing, as well as an overview of its possible applications in the cyber security domain. OpenNebula users have a range of storage options available to them, including proprietary appliances, proprietary software and Open Source software projects. This session will present a fully Open Source approach, that tightly integrates with Linux, and makes full use of the mature building blocks within the Linux kernel (LVM, Software RAID, DM-crypt, NVMe-oF Target, DRBD, etc...), and delivers one of the highest performance open source storage stacks currently available. The core goal is to expose the improved performance of NVMe storage devices to VMs and containers. The solution covers both local NVMe drives and NVMe-oF. For interacting with NVMe-oF targets it supports the Swordfish-API and LVM & Linux’s software NVMe-oF target. The solution contains a storage addon for OpenNebula.
