The consequence of sin
1. The Consequence of Sin
Responsibility is doing what is good as demanded by
the situation and being accountable for one’s action.
2. Death: The Consequence of Sin
• Sin is an utterance, a deed, or a
desire contrary to the eternal law. –
St. Augustine
3. Death: The Consequence of Sin
• Since God is love, we are born in, with, and for love.
When we turn away from God, we turn away from
love; thus, we turn away from pour whole being.
Eventually, we destroy ourselves because we cannot
live where there is no love. Thus, we experience
death when we sin for this is its result or
consequence.
4. Death: The Consequence of Sin
21 What benefit did you reap at that time from the
things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in
death! 22 But now that you have been set free from
sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you
reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal
life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God
is eternal life in[a] Christ Jesus our Lord. –Rom. 6: 21- 23
5. Old Testament Notions of Sin
1. Missing the Mark
2. Depravity and Perversity
3. Rebellion and Transgression
6. Missing the Mark
This happens when one loses his
focus on God and his covenant with
Him by offending others and failing
to meet his covenant obligations
with God- that He shall be our God
and we shall be His people.
7. Depravity and Perversity
This refers to the defect of
character or disorder that weighs
the sinner down.
In Christian Theology, it is the
innate corruptness of human
nature, due to original sin.
8. Depravity and Perversity
Pravitas- crooked or perverse
Perversity is showing a deliberate
and obstinate desire to behave in a
way that is unreasonable or
unacceptable, often in spite of the
consequences. (sy.- stubbornness)
9. Rebellion and Transgression
We picture sin here as a
conscious choice which destroys
positive relationships or
convention.
10. Old Testament Notions of Sin
Committing sin is fatal to our soul. It
kills not just the body but our soul as it
makes one lose sight of God and His
ways.
12. Spiral dimension
Enslaves us in a contagious habit of
vice that acts like a virus, infecting
social attitudes and structures such as
family, social groups, etc.
13. Sickness
It creates scenarios that would stir up
hateful negative emotions that would
change our attitude toward that of
unforgiveness. This would eventually
cause us to feel ill.
14. Addiction
This is a process over which we become powerless
as it becomes progressively more compulsive and
obsessive leading us to patterns of ever deeper
deception of self and others, ending in the
inevitable disintegration of all our major personal
and social relationships.
15. Loss of “sense of sin”
“Perhaps the greatest sin in the world
today is that men have begun to lose the
sense of sin.”- Pope Pius XII
The more we sin, the more we lose our
sense of sin and our conscience hardens.
16. Worksheet # 2
Form groups of three and think of how
Filipinos lose the sense of sin in the
present times. Give some examples (at
least 2) and the effects on us as a
nation.
