- So how do we reach the world? BBC continues to support us in our mission to provide access to people where it really matters – in their homes . It’s perhaps worth remembering: With the BBC we had 210 m views of OU programmes in the UK last year - Across incredible wide range of channels and subjects And working with BBC internationally – especially with BBC World Service – on programmes like Digital Planet in excess of 1bn events where someone sat down and watched or listened to an OU programme. But … there are other important parts to this story of reach … keen to find ways to reach new learners in new ways on their terms.
- Purpose of slide: introduce the LearningSpace and describe its distinctive features related to our approach at the OU. The headline is that a large choice of content for learners to select what interest them is critical to engagement and that we shouldn’t over estimate learners need for social interaction: 6 million browsing visitors, 8 million visits. Growth year on year. 900K – 3M – 6M (approx) 100,000 registered users 6,000 FM video conferences booked 100 public FM conferences with over 27,000 replays 7,000 Compendium software downloads 15,000 forum entries read per week 10,000 units printed per week 10,000 content downloads per week Translations into Catalan, Portuguese, Spanish, Chinese 44 collaboration units 11,000 going on to study at The Open University 20% focus on one unit, 50% focus on five or more units
- Purpose of slide: to show evidence of a learner using OpenLearn as a starting point for formal study.
- More than 60% of our OpenLearn visitors are international . This takes ONE example from ONE system in ONE month to illustrate some interesting GLOBAL participation in open activities; Look here at world free learners working LIVE in OpenLearn in September 2009. 700 users meeting live; But with 20,000 ‘reuses’ of their ‘live’ work in the same period. Check out BRAZIL… This is an OPEN and REMIX story individuals and partners actively using and adapting our free and open materials.
- • The OU has a dedicated channel on YouTube ( www.youtube.com/ou ). OU View contains bite sized extracts from a wide range of courses, plus videos of research, experiments and OU student life in general – to date there have been over 1.6 million video views. • In a world first, The OU launched a ‘free university course’ iGoogle Gadget that offers people a downloadable link to OpenLearn via their iGoogle homepage. • The OU has its own Facebook page and a presence in Second Life ‘Open Life’, and a popular Twitter account with 2,631 followers.
- Using existing technology rather than building it ourselves so we can concentrate on what we do best. YouTube not only takes the load of hosting high quality videos but provides best of breed functionality. YouTube offers video specific analytics software, a video player, mobile upload of videos, closed captions, API's, widgets, playlists, and video annotation.
- Facebook Course Profiles app has 6.5K users
- Apple make very big claims for iTunes. It is certainly a powerful browser, that is strong because of certain key contextual strengths and some brilliant marketing by Apple. They have allowed some US Universities to distribute content (mostly lectures, obviously) for many years now (though they did not call it iTunes U until 2007). The Open University was a highlight their international launch on June 3rd 2008 (with UCL and Trinity, Dublin), and by the time that Oxford and Cambridge entered the store in October 2008, we had already seen 1 Million downloads. At the admission of the rest of Europe in January 2009, we have already secured nearly 2.5 Million downloads. We are now over 5 Million.
- We have focused very much on the clear presentation of OU brand in this channel... All potential iTunes U providers should note that this is very much a ‘visual’ browsing space - in which the images you use to ‘front’ your academic work are very important.
