3. MODERN OLYMPICS
The modern Olympic Games are a major international
event featuring summer and winter sports.
In Olympic Games thousands of athletes participate in
a variety of competitions.
The Olympic Games are considered to be the world's
foremost sports competition.
More than 200 nations participate in Olympics.
The Games are currently held biennially.
4. MODERN OLYMPICS CONTINUES
Their creation was inspired by the ancient Olympic Games.
Baron Pierre de Coubertin founded the International
Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1894.
The IOC has since become the governing body of
the Olympic Movement.
The Olympic Movement consists of international sports
federations (IFs), National Olympic Committees (NOCs),
and organizing committees for each specific Olympic
Games.

6. LONDON OLYMPICS LOGO AND
GRAPHICS
There have been two London 2012 logos.
One for the bidding process created by Kino Design.
Second as the brand for the Games themselves.
The official London 2012 Olympic typeface was called
Headline 2012.
7. LONDON OLYMPICS MASCOTS
The official mascots for the 2012 Summer Olympic and
were unveiled on 19 May 2010.
Wenlock and Mandeville are animations depicting two
drops of steel from a steelworks in Bolton.
The writer Michael Morpurgo wrote the story concept to
the mascots, and an animation was produced.
Two stories have been created about the mascots: Out
Of A Rainbow and Adventures On A Rainbow.
8. LONDON OLYMPIC VENUES
The majority of venues have been divided into three
zones within Greater London
The Olympic Zone
The River Zone
The Central Zone
There are a few venues that are outside the boundaries
of Greater London, such as Weymouth and Portland
National Sailing Academy
The football tournament was staged at several grounds
around the UK.
Wembley Arena being used for badminton and
rhythmic gymnastics events instead.
9. LONDON OYMPICS SECURITY
The security operation was led by the police, with 10,000
officers available.
Naval and air assets, including ships situated in the Thames.
Euro fighter jets and surface-to-air missiles were deployed as
part of the security operation
Missile system was stationed on top of the water tower.
The Metropolitan Police and the Royal Marines carried out
security exercises in preparation for the Olympics on 19
January 2012.
With 50 marine police officers, joined by up to 100 military
personnel and a Lynx Navy helicopter.
10. LONDON OLYMPICS TORCH RELAY
The Olympics torch relay ran from 19 May to 27 July
2012, before the Games
Plans for the relay were developed in 2010–11.
The Olympic flame arrived on flight BA2012 on 18 May
2012 from Greece.
The relay lasted 70 days, with 66 evening celebrations
and six island visits.
About 8,000 people carrying the torch a distance of
about 8,000 miles (12,800 km), starting from Land's
End in Cornwall.
Indian Olympic Torch had carried by Mr. Amitabh
Bachhan.
11. LONDON OLYMPICS OPENING
CEREMONY
The opening ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympics
was held on 27 July 2012.
Titled “Isles of Wonder”.
Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle was its artistic
director.
The music directors being the electronic music duo Rick
Smith and Karl Hyde of Underworld.
The Games were officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II.
A short comic film starring Daniel Craig as secret
agent James Bond and the Queen as herself was screened
during the ceremony.
12. LONDON OLYMPICS OPENING
CEREMONY CONTINUES
London spent an estimated £27m (out of £80m
budgeted for its four Olympic ceremonies).
The ceremony began at 21:00 BST and lasted almost
four hours.
It was watched by an estimated worldwide television
audience of 900 million.
The principal sections of the artistic display
represented Britain's industrial revolution, National
Health Service, and its musical and literary heritage.

Orchestra joined by Rowan Atkinson in character
as Mr. Bean
13. LONDON OLYMPICS CLOSING
CEREMONY
The closing ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics,
also known as A Symphony of British Music.
Held on 12 August in the Olympic Stadium.
The event was created by Kim Gavin, Es Devlin, Stephen
Daldry, David Arnold and Mark Fisher.
The ceremony featured a number of British music artists
and saw the Olympic flame extinguished and the flag
lowered.
The worldwide broadcast began at 21:00 BST and lasting
three hours and eleven minutes.
14. LONDON OLYMPICS CLOSING
CEREMONY CONTINUES
The 2012 London Olympics were officially closed
by Jacques Rogge, who called London's games "happy
and glorious.
The ceremony included a handover to the next host city
for the 2016 Olympics, Rio de Janeiro.
Rio marked the handover with an eight minute section
known as Embrace created by Cao Hamburger and
Daniela Thomas.
An average of 23.2 million viewers in the UK watched the
event, with an estimated 750 million worldwide.
15. LONDON OLYMPICS PARTICIPANTS
Around 10,500 athletes from 204 National Olympic
Committees (NOCs) took part.
Surpassing the 1948 Summer Olympics in London and
the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester.
Three athletes from the Netherlands Antilles Olympic
Committee withdrawn by the IOC in session of June
2011.
One athlete from South Sudan, which has no
recognized NOC, participated independently under
the Olympic flag.
16. LONDON OLYMPICS SPORTS
The 2012 London Olympic programme featured 26
sports and a total of 39 disciplines.

18. LONDON OLYMPICS CONTROVERSIES
There were several controversies during the lead-up to
the Games, including sponsorship.
Thousands of people failed to secure seats for the
events they wanted following a complicated lottery
process.
In the badminton women's doubles 8 competitors were
disqualified for "not using best efforts“.
A number of results in boxing, gymnastics and judo
were overturned by officials after initial decisions were
appealed.
19. INDIA AT LONDON OLYMPICS
The Indian Olympic Association sent the nation's
largest delegation to the Games in Olympic history.
A total of 83 athletes, 60 men and 23 women, competed
in 13 sports.
Men's field hockey was the only team-based sport in
which India had its representation in these Olympic
games.
India also marked its Olympic return in weightlifting,
after the International Weightlifting
Federation imposed a two-year suspension.
20. INDIA AT LONDON OLYMPICS
CONTINUES
In opening ceremony Indian flag bearer was Sushil
Kumar and in closing ceremony Mary Kom.
India bags a total of 6 medals (2 silver and 4 bronze).
This was India's most successful Olympics based on
the medal standings.
Two medals were awarded to the athletes in shooting
and wrestling.
India also set a historical milestone for the female
athletes who won two Olympic medals.
21. INDIA AT LONDON OLYMPICS
CONTINUES
Badminton player and world junior champion Saina
Nehwal became the first Indian athlete to win an
Olympic bronze medal in the women's singles.
Boxer Mary Kom bag bronze in the first ever women's
flyweight event.
