My talk on setting up a great distributed(remote) team. I am sharing theoretical example on great team building from the world of sports, based on achievements of a great ice hockey coach Herb Brooks.
Practical case studies some from the IT consultancy industry featuring two big web development players Wunderkraut and Axelerant and an intern student Beate Neimane. Massive credits and thanks do go to them.

fortitude under fatigue and privation. Courage is
only second; hardship, poverty and want are the

“My recruiting key -- I looked for PEOPLE first,
athletes second. I wanted people with a sound
value system as you cannot buy values. You're
only as good as your values. I learned early on
that you do not put greatness into people... but
somehow try to pull it out.”
What do I need for my team in terms of staff. A genius, The Best or just ordinary guys? We’ll try to get these questions covered!
How big should I built my team - 2,3,5,7??? Should I stress out my people pushing the boundaries of their limits or I go the “mass” route?
Developing the Leader Within You (Maxwell, John C.)
This quotation originally is taken from “Developing the Leader Within You” (Maxwell, John C.)
Skills do not define you, your attitude does!
I thought on talking about History, IT or Governance. But, behold - will it make difference to a dull day in a developer’s life? No there should be something completely different!
I thought quite a lot on a theoretical example. The one who in best possible way would convey the message of great of team building example.
Finally after much contemplation on the Team building subject I landed on sports and Ice hockey as it’s “type”.
My preferred kind - a tough game where the meaning of team spirit is highly embraced.
You don’t have enough talent to win on talent alone. Your values are that determine your position in a team.
He cared about his plan and started recruiting olympics team early - years before the miracle on ice. He embraced winning mentality. He was the first in Northen American hockey who introduced principles on creativity - players moving around the field controlling the puck and passing to others. Also, embracing team chemistry to make a better team than a man.
It resulted in so called “Miracle on Ice”. A phenomenal game where US team won USSR team (at that time unbeaten for more than a decade), where college students kicked the but of experienced players.
Vladislav Tretjak - USSR goalie at that time caught Him smiling after this game. “We were happy, cause that was first time different after 15 years all time winning”, he said after the game!

My inspiration Herb looked to for people not for athletes. He wasn’t looking for skills, but for attitude and determination!

Patrick Lencioni in the book The Five Dysfunctions of a Team states; We have to make people vulnerable to understand their fears to boost team effectiveness and start being able to trust each other.
