James Malinchak Questioned On NPR On In The Air In Nevada Community College Part 7 Of 8
1. James Malinchak Questioned On NPR On In The Air In
Nevada Community College Part 7 Of 8
The following is part 7 of the interview of James Malinchak on NPR’s In the Air Radio:
James:Jack and Mark got goose bumps up their spines, like I’m getting right now, I just like
the story so much I still get goose bumps. They said we should make a book to help inmates.
John:When I hear you say that it hits me that these people are not only forgotten by others,
but they do not take themselves seriously anymore. They’ve given up on themselves to
haven’t they because what’s the future? In fact, that would be tough. Let’s say somebody
who is doing hard time for life, why change? Why make a change? There has to be some
really awakening and rebirth inside that says I want to live, even if it has to be in here. I have
not read the book, and so it is just out to I think.
James:Oh, it is all over the Nation and we’ve have tons of corporations and foundations that
bought large blocks of books and donated them to inmates all around the country and to the
prison libraries just to try and help those who want to be helped. This is important. You
cannot help somebody who do not want to help themselves. Just to try and help those who
want to be helped and get their train back on the right track.
I always say that in all of my talks. I can't motivate you. You mentioned 1200 and I added
them up, and it’s actually 2200 now. I always say in the beginning of my talks I can't motivate
you. If you don't want to change and you don’t want to be better, if you don't want to get over
a tough time you're not going to do it.
John:This person that you are talking about, the prisoner thought he was that kind of person
and all of a sudden something spoke to him within the pages of Chicken Soup for the Soul
and all of a sudden it triggered an attitude change.
James:Yes. No one can motivate, or a book can't motivate, a lecture can't motivate. You'll be
inspired by something, but eventually it comes down to you to make the action, to change, to
grow or whatever that may be.
John:To see the connection, to begin opening up to it.
James:Absolutely.
John:What kind of, how many stories, I don't want to get into statistics but how do you as well
as your other editors Mark Victor Hanson and Jack Canfield put together and how does it
grow and is it ever going to stop? Are there lists after lists of groups you could write these
stories for or that you collect the stories?
2. James:There are over 100 million copies of Chicken Soup for the Soul books sold today,
published in thirty-nine languages. Jack and Mark’s goal is to sell 1 billion. That is with a “B”
billion Chicken Soup books because they feel that if they do that we will positively influence
the whole world.
The motto for Chicken Soup for the Soul for Jack and Mark is ‘Changing the World One Story
at a Time.’ I see from the stories that I’ve written the letters I get is amazing. It brings tears to
your eyes to realize that something you've written or maybe said in a speech has helped
somebody. That is some powerful stuff.
I look at that and say, well I’m still the small steel mill town kid that was raised in Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania and now I'm now saying something or writing something that's changing the
course of someone’s life. I am blessed; I'm so blessed.
