Since the days following the Great Flood, humanity has rebuilt. There are nations of people, great diversity of cultures but one commonality that all share, a sin nature that continues to fuel rebellion against God. It is at this critical moment that God calls a man named Abram, an old man with no heir and no real prospect of having a son to carry on his name and inherit all that God had blessed him with. God promises Abram a son. But Abram gets tired of waiting and has a son with a concubine named Hagar. Abram took matters into his own hands, but Ishmael was not the son God had promised. Like Abram, we often try to do for ourselves to disastrous consequences. So, God restated his promise of a son born to both Abram and his wife Sarai. From this point they will be called Abraham and Sarah and God promises them a son whom he will bless greatly. Plot twist – Then God tells Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac. Was God messing with Abraham? No, but he did want us to anticipate another son, one who would come at the perfect time (Gal. 4:4) and be sacrificed for our sins.
