Class Management Help HW 9: Momentum Begin Date: 4/20/2018 12:01:00 AM Due Date: 5/1/2018 11:59:00 PM End Date: 5/8/2018 11:59:00 PM (6%) Problem 7: Imagine a shopping cart of mass m, mos ng at a velocity v tothe right runn ngno a seconds op ping cart, or mass 3m, which is at rest. ssignment Status Click here for detailed view After the collision, if the first shopping cart moving at a velocity v/2 towards the left, how much impulse did the second cart deliver to the first? Grade Summary Deductions 50 Potential 50% 1/2mv to the left None. The larger cart was at rest and had to momentum to give to the lighter one my to the left None. The lighter cart gave momentum to the heavier cart, not the other way arou Problem Status 1 Completed 6) 3/2mv to the left. Attempts remaining: 2 (25% per attempt) detailed view Feedback I give up 25% 5 Completed 6 Completed Hints: 1 for a 0o deduction Hints remaining 0 Feedback: 2% deduction per feedback. 259% -Impulse is the transfer of momentun, so how much momentum must have transferred between the carts to change the velocity of the first cart from v to the right to w2 to the left? 8 Completed 9 Completed 10 Completed 11 Partial 12 Completed 13 Partial 14 Completed 15 Completed 16 Completed
Solution
here,
mass of shopping cart is m and intial speed is v to the right
the final speed of first shopping cart is v/2 to the left
so,
using conservation of momentum for the collison
the impulse delivered to the seccond , I2 = m * v - (- m * v/2)
I2 = 3/2 mv
so, the imulse delivered by seccond cart to the first is 3/2 mv to the left
