Due to engine certification issues in the U.S., Hino Motors has suspended vehicle production at its factories
in West Virginia and Ontario, Canada, until Oct. 2021, the company announced Dec. 23. Hino Motors is the
Toyota Group’s truck and bus subsidiary.
The Hino Board of Directors-approved decision was made based on “challenges in the required U.S. engine
certification testing process for new model years of the A09C, J08E, and J05E*engines for North America.”
The Environmental Protection Agency’s Phase 2 greenhouse gas emissions standards cover model years
2021-2027, which means new model year vehicle sales, including the refreshed Hino XL Series (Classes 7 &
8), have also been postponed.

Production of trailers in the United States is set to decline for five consecutive quarters before increasing in the final
three months of 2024, according to FTR Transportation Intelligence Chairman Eric Starks.
Trailer output in the second quarter of 2023 was 85,000 units, while in the third quarter it is expected to total 82,000
units, and the fourth quarter is forecast to see 74,000 units built, Starks told the FTR Transportation Conference 2023
on Sept. 11 in Indianapolis. Still, that is a decent outlook, he said.
In the first quarter of 2024, FTR — a freight and commercial vehicle equipment forecasting firm — expects output to
total 63,000 units followed by 60,000 units in Q2 and 58,000 units in Q3, he said.

Key Highlights
Carbon emissions and energy usage: Companies should implement comprehensive carbon reduction plans combining energy
efficiency measures with renewable energy.
Water usage and management: Businesses should ensure water conservation and management strategies are in place to minimise
wasting water and the effects of their operations on local communities.
Waste management and reduction: Companies are advised to implement effective waste reduction and recycling practices to make
sure waste is kept to a minimum and everything that can be recycled is.
Biodiversity and habitat conservation: Firms may wish to develop and implement conservation plans to help preserve local
wildlife: consider forming partnerships with local wildlife and conservation charities to help promote habitat restoration and
biodiversity conservation.
Pollution and toxic chemical usage: Businesses are advised to collaborate with communities to ensure toxic chemical usage does
not affect local biodiversity sites and wild habitats.
Supply chain sustainability: Business leaders should look to establish supplier sustainability programmes and guidelines to ensure
their products are ethically sourced and manufactured.
Climate change adaption and resilience: Businesses are encouraged to develop a climate change action plan and implement
measures aimed at reducing their company's greenhouse gas emissions and energy usage.

The key to addressing the above is having the both the right policy development along with the right data journey from data capturing
through to data ingestion by a reporting tool. Data silos as well as well Microsoft Excel files could challenge ESG teams as part of getting
accurate information for both the regulatory and operational cycles.

Summary:
U.S. Class 8 retail sales in August stayed about the same from the year-ago period but increased
from the prior month, Wards Intelligence reported.
Sales declined 1% to 23,342 units from 23,581 in 2022, but rose sequentially from 21,021 sold in
July. It marked the first year-over-year drop this year. Year-to-date, Class 8 sales are up 15.2% to
180,106 units, compared with 156,275 at this time in 2022.
Wards found that five of the seven major truck makers experienced a year-over-year rise in truck
sales. Daimler Truck North America’s Freightliner brand took the largest market share in August
with 8,158 trucks sold, accounting for 34.9% of all sales, compared with 9,783 units in the same
period a year earlier. Western Star, also a DTNA brand, reported that sales increased 19.5% to
722 units from 604.
