My slideshow was programmed to progress through the slides in the prescriptive manner. To get me started I scripted the first 4 slides for there onwards I went with the flow. Slide One: I'm going to take you back in time not the distant past but to a world different from today. A 10 year journey, an awakening over which time my analog life met the digital world. Slide Two It starts here in 1996 ... my life BT "before technology" no dial up, no I devises, a phone was a phone and mine wasn't even cordless! There are 5 channels on the TV and a video recorder. I could record one channel and watch another with simplicity. Books were my Google Slide Three There was, what you might now call technology in my work place and this story is how that led inextricable to where I am today. It formed the bed rock of how technology enhanced life but the skills are still relevant today the prompt desk... switches have become buttons and the pre-sets are now programmed. GO still executed a command and timing are constant. With a manual the time to learn the interface the purpose of the tool is the same analog life simplified by the emerging digital world. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with.
