Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer PRE-PRIMARY Characters - 8 reindeer (4 boys and 4 girls since Santa’s sleigh is driven by 4 male reindeer and 4 female reindeer) 1 Rudolph Santa Claus Rudolph’s mummy Material - Ball red chalk (when you choose a Rudolph, colour his/her nose with red chalk) some clothes (you can use the kids’ scarves or jackets) to make Santa´s big tummy. some string Setting Before starting the play, position the characters. Every time you do this in class, use the same setting so they know where they start from. Santa Mum 8 reindeer centre stage Rudolph Rest of the class watching

My favourite colour is __________ Reindeer 2: Hello! My name is _____________. I’m a reindeer. My favourite colour is __________ Reindeer 3: Hello! My name is _____________. I’m a reindeer. My favourite colour is __________ Reindeer 4: Hello! My name is _____________. I’m a reindeer. My favourite colour is __________ Reindeer 5: Hello! My name is _____________. I’m a reindeer. My favourite colour is __________ Reindeer 6: Hello! My name is _____________. I’m a reindeer. My favourite colour is __________ Reindeer 7: Hello! My name is _____________. I’m a reindeer. My favourite colour is __________ Reindeer 8: Hello! My name is _____________. I’m a reindeer. My favourite colour is __________ Rudolph: Hello! My name is Rudolph, and my nose is red (he says it very sadly) (If they have a good level of English they can introduce the reindeer by their names here, if not, they can use their own names) Reindeer 1: Let´s play! (they place themselves in a circle and pass the ball from one to another. They can sing while they play, or they can count numbers, using a real ball. While they are playing, Rudolph approaches the group) Rudolph: Hello! Reindeers: (stop playing) Hello Rudolph Rudolph: Can I play?
  3. 3. Reindeer: No, No, No! Red Nose, Red Nose, Red Nose ! (they play again, and Rudolph tries again) Rudolph: Hello! Reindeer: (stop playing) Hello Rudolph Rudolph: Can I play? Reindeer: No, No, No! Red Nose, Red Nose, Red Nose! (they play again, and Rudolph tries again) Rudolph: Hello! Reindeer: (stop playing) Hello Rudolph Rudolph: Can I play? Reindeer: No, No, No! Red Nose, Red Nose, Red Nose (they say pointing at him) (Rudolph runs away crying and he goes to his house where mummy is waiting) Rudolph: Mummy! Mummy! They won´t let me play! (pointing at them) Mummy: Don´t worry Rudolph. (Gives Rudolph a hug) Come on, go to sleep. Rudolph: Ok mummy, Good night… (he lies down and sleeps) -----------------------------------------------------------------------------(The 8 reindeer keep playing with the ball and Santa Claus appears) TIP: Put some clothes under Santa’s sweater, so it looks like he has a huge tummy. Santa Claus: Hohohohoho!!! Hello Reindeers! Reindeer: Hello Santa!
  4. 4. Santa Claus: It´s Christmas Eve! Let´s go!! (The 8 reindeer put themselves in pairs, in rows of two (reindeer 1&2, reindeer 3&4…). You can use some string here and they hold onto the string) Santa Claus: Ready? Reindeer: Yeees!!! Santa Claus: Let´s go! (The reindeer start to walk but they go very slowly) Reindeer: Santa! It´s foggy! (They pretend to bump into a tree, or they can bump into the wall…they love that!) Reindeer: Santa! It´s foggy! We can´t see! Santa Claus: Mmmmmmm…..(he puts his finger to his head) I have an idea! Reindeer! Wait here! (Santa Claus goes to Rudolph’s house and knocks on the door) Rudolph’s mummy: Hello Santa! What a surprise! Santa Claus: Good evening! Where is Rudolph? Rudolph’s mummy: Rudolph is sleeping (Santa Claus enters and touches Rudolph’s shoulder with his finger) Santa Claus: Rudolph! Wake up! (Rudolph wakes up and is very surprised) Rudolph: Santa!!!! Santa Claus: Let´s go Rudolph! (Santa and Rudolph go with the other reindeer, and Santa places Rudolph in the front row) Santa Claus: With your red nose we can see.
  5. 5. Santa Claus: Let´s go!!! (They walk ahead without bumping into anything, and Santa can throw presents to the rest of the children) Santa Claus: Ok! Finished! Let´s go home! (Back home Santa goes to Rudolph and says) Santa Claus: Good job Rudolph! All the reindeer: Very good Rudolph! Thank you!! (Rudolph picks up the ball and asks the reindeer) Rudolph: Can I play? Reindeers: Yes!!!!! Let´s play!!! (all the reindeer play together) AND THAT´S ALL!!! (Put them at the front of the class, ask for a big round of applause and the actors can bow, pretending to be artists)

TIPS AND TRICKS  Remember that “We learn while we use and we use while we learn”.  Give them a lot of practice, include the story in your daily routine, explain it “with them”, not “to them”.  Practice the story first with your fingers with the whole class, each finger is a character.  Then, when they have learnt it, let them act it out. Act it out just once a day, if not they can get bored.  The class delegate can choose who he wants to be and can choose the rest of the characters.  Let them switch roles, so they will learn all the play.  After all this practice, they are ready to tell the story.
