Dear colleague,
As you are all to aware, there is an increasing need to
demonstrate project and programme efficiency to justify
continued operations. Defence budgets are being cut the
world over.
•	The US has committed to saving more than $100m
over the next five years
•	France is aiming to cut up to $5bn over the next
three years
•	Germany is looking at upwards of $10bn worth
of savings
•	Following the Strategic Defence Review, the UK is
also looking to implement ‘ruthless cuts’
This will be the first Value for Money and Efficiency in
Defence conference - addressing these current challenges
but also presenting providers with the opportunity to
demonstrate concrete ways to make substantial savings to
programmes and highlight already successful platforms. It
will also enable Chief Acquisition Officers, Programme
Managers and Procurement Officials from militaries the
world over to learn from best practice among peers, and for
the first time in this context, really drill down methods for
making their programmes more efficient and eliminate waste
from projects.
There are some exceptional examples of value for
money and efficiency represented at this event. The
re-tooled or re-worked C130 is an excellent example of
making the absolute most out of an existing platform -
through both design and usage modifications. The FSAF
‘family’ of missiles are an excellent example of joint-service,
multinational and modular design. The Virginia Class
Submarine is a high-profile, exceptionally enviable example
of efficient and Lean construction and development.
I know you will find the key discussion points of
Procurement & Through Life Capability
Management, Successful Joint Working and
Lean in Defence both thoroughly useful and relevant
in the current climate - as well as highly rewarding.
I look forward to welcoming you in London.

	 Defence procurement agencies provide the

pressure to push down costs but also seek value
for money. These briefings highlight ways of
achieving this and elaborate on lessons learnt.
Through life cycle management brings together
the behaviours, systems, processes and tools to

  • 2. Dear colleague, As you are all to aware, there is an increasing need to demonstrate project and programme efficiency to justify continued operations. Defence budgets are being cut the world over. • The US has committed to saving more than $100m over the next five years • France is aiming to cut up to $5bn over the next three years • Germany is looking at upwards of $10bn worth of savings • Following the Strategic Defence Review, the UK is also looking to implement ‘ruthless cuts’ This will be the first Value for Money and Efficiency in Defence conference - addressing these current challenges but also presenting providers with the opportunity to demonstrate concrete ways to make substantial savings to programmes and highlight already successful platforms. It will also enable Chief Acquisition Officers, Programme Managers and Procurement Officials from militaries the world over to learn from best practice among peers, and for the first time in this context, really drill down methods for making their programmes more efficient and eliminate waste from projects. There are some exceptional examples of value for money and efficiency represented at this event. The re-tooled or re-worked C130 is an excellent example of making the absolute most out of an existing platform - through both design and usage modifications. The FSAF ‘family’ of missiles are an excellent example of joint-service, multinational and modular design. The Virginia Class Submarine is a high-profile, exceptionally enviable example of efficient and Lean construction and development. I know you will find the key discussion points of Procurement & Through Life Capability Management, Successful Joint Working and Lean in Defence both thoroughly useful and relevant in the current climate - as well as highly rewarding. I look forward to welcoming you in London. Phelim Rowe, Production Director IQPC International Breakfast seminar Lean DEFENCE - GET A HEAD START!
