3. About Cambodia
The fate of Cambodia shocked the world when the radical
communist Khmer Rouge under their leader Pol Pot seized
power in 1975 after years of guerrilla warfare. In pursuit of a
rural utopia, the Khmer Rouge abolished money and private
property and ordered city dwellers into the countryside to
cultivate the fields. Up to two million people died during the
next four years, many from exhaustion or starvation. Others
were tortured and executed.
Cambodia is benefiting from two decades of relative stability,
having endured civil war and the murderous rule of the
Khmer Rouge. As it attempts to end its dependence on
foreign aid, the country's economic potential and natural
resources are drawing foreign investment. Cambodia is still
one of the world's poorest countries, with around one third
of people living on less than one dollar per day. The
enrolment rate in tertiary education is only 14%, which
means the pool of skilled people is very small.
What is crucial now, is that they need to develop their
education sector and they need to build partnerships to bring
more advanced education into the country, especially
vocational training.
A beguiling country, Cambodia rarely fails to enthral. The
obvious draw is the extraordinary temple complex of Angkor,
the impressive legacy of the Khmer Empire and one of the
most astounding sites in the world.
Nestled between rice paddies and stretched along the Siem
Reap River, the small provincial town of Siem Reap serves as
the gateway to the ancient temple ruins of the Khmer
Empire. With a distinct colonial and Chinese style of
architecture this town evolved from a cluster of old villages,
but today is alive with culture, restaurants and bars. There is
a vast array of delicious cuisine on offer in the many
restaurants.

Pre-trip: Individual introductory session with
facilitators, followed by a group briefing.
Cambodia: The journey will be a mixture of on the ground
community and cultural experiences, blended with
facilitated debriefs and development sessions.
Post-trip: Individual and group debrief sessions with the option
to engage in one-on-one ongoing coaching.

5. Phillip Ralph is the founder and partner of The Leadership Sphere.
Phillip’s passion is working with leaders and teams whose desire is
to achieve high levels of performance and make a difference. His
approach blends a focus on personal transformation with a
rigorous systems approach. He is a recognised specialist in the field
of Adaptive Leadership and supports some of worlds largest
companies in developing their leadership capability and capacity.
Prior to establishing TLS, Phillip spent six years with the highly
successful and innovative ANZ cultural transformation program
called Breakout, where he was the Head of Consulting and
Facilitation.
Holly Kneebone is the founder of The Breathing Space. She has
been supporting senior leaders to unlock the mindsets,
assumptions and behaviours that underlie optimal performance for
14 years.
Holly’s holistic and multi-disciplinary approach combines
psychotherapy and somatic approaches, coaching, mindfulness
practices, adult development and systems theory, together with
the latest research in brain science.
She partners with top tier legal, consulting and accounting firms,
banks, technology companies, university faculties and government
departments.
Holly is a former lawyer, university lecturer and experienced
leadership development professional.
Venerable Somnieng is the second head monk of Wat Damnak
temple and a co-founder of Life and Hope Association. Prior to
establishing Life and Hope Association, he worked as a Branch
Director/Program Officer at Salvation Center Cambodia and
received his BA in Management from St. Ambrose University USA.
In July 2011, Ven. Somnieng was awarded a summer scholarship to
attend a conference on Social Perspectives in Non-profit
Management, at Harvard Business School. In May 2013, he
completed his masters degree of public administration at Harvard
University, Kennedy School of Government, having been awarded a
full scholarship from Harvard International fellowships/
scholarships.
