A new wave of commerce is upon us but it isn't going to be powered by the catalog-based shopping paradigms of 1990's dotcoms. Instead, this new wave of digital commerce will be powered by our voices, by our presence, by our social currency.
Presented at Magento Imagine 2016 this talk is intended for marketers, developers and store owners thinking about the future of their online business and how to anticipate the new customer acquisition channels in the years to come.

THE FUTURE OF COMMERCE

WITH REAL-WORLD
METAPHORS FOR NEARLY
EVERYTHING THAT WE COME
INTO CONTACT WITH
14. The Desktop Metaphor
The computer's metaphorical
desktop, with its onscreen windows
and hierarchy of folders, is the only
digital work environment most users
and designers have ever known.
The 1984 Macintosh
WHAT HAPPENED TO THE DESKTOP?
18. “…empirical studies show that the
traditional desktop design does not
provide sufficient support for today's
real-life tasks involving collaboration,
multitasking, multiple roles, and diverse
technologies”

THE DEATH OF THE SHOPPING CART
44. • Intent Generation – generate intent for items you didn’t know you
even wanted. It’s the ultimate top of the funnel generation.
• Intent Harvesting – They allow you to harvest the intent that’s been
generated.
PASSIVE COMMERCE
45. Passive Commerce exists at the space in-
between intent generation and intent
harvesting. You know you already want the
product, but have no immediacy to buy now.
Passive Commerce accelerates the step to
intent harvesting.

to eventually use Amazon Dash
Replenishment with their connected
devices, including Samsung printers,
Brita water pitchers, Whirlpool washers
and dryers and Purell hand-sanitizer
dispensers.

73. Alexa, the voice service that powers
Amazon Echo, provides capabilities, or
skills, that enable customers to interact
with devices in a more intuitive way
using voice.
The Alexa Skills Kit is a collection of
self-service APIs, tools, documentation
and code samples that make it fast and
easy for you to add skills to Alexa.
When you go to Amazon, you’re usually ready to make the purchase.
Whirlpool Corp. will release a washing machine soon that will know when you’re running low on detergent and place an order for delivery. Brita GmbH is planning a “connected” pitcher that measures the amount of water that passes through its filter and uses DRS to order new filters. Brother brand printers will also be part of the program.
You can even order an Uber from Alexa
