2. SJS is a rare and serious condition of your skin
and mucous membranes.

3. oFlulike symptoms:
-cough
-fatigue
-fever
-headache
-muscle & joint pains
-sore throat
oThree-ringed sores (shades of pink and red) develop on skin
oSores & blisters spread to skin (possibly
eyes, genitals, lungs, stomach & colon as well)
oSkin eventually dies and falls off (you can lose 10-30% of your
body’s epidermis)

4. Tested for via biopsy, blood tests, x-rays, etc.
Histopathologic Findings- changes in the epidermal-
dermal area such as sub-epidermal blisters as well as
apoptosis of keratinocytes
Ocular Examination (conjunctival biopsy)- may show
subepithelial plasma cells and lymphocyte infiltration if
patient has active ocular disease

5. ◊SJS is usually caused by an allergic reaction to a medication
(normally an antibiotic, anti-seizure medication or non-steroidal
anti-inflammatory medication).
◊Causes of SJS can’t always be identified

6. ₪Fluid replacement
₪Stop use of medication causing reaction
₪Antacids (help prevent stomach/intestinal bleeding)
₪Topical antibiotics (helps treat any skin infections)
₪Hydrotherapy (clean wounds & remove dead tissue from skin)
₪Physical therapy (help arm & leg movement if on bed rest)
₪Surgery:
Debridement- cleans & removes dirt/dead tissue from infected area
Skin graft- help heal infected area

7. Death (due to infections, lung problems, etc.)
Possible skin scarring and pigment changes
Difficulty with swallowing, vision, urinating and skin for
life
May lose nails and hair forever
